Literally meaning “God will help” in Hebrew, Lazarus Mathebula tacked the suffix ‘–man’ to his given name creating Lazarusman, the moniker of his work. To some, this softens the blow of a biblical name, but to others, this twist of meaning, “God will help man” epitomizes Lazarus’ sophisticated lyricism wrought with word play. 

Since embarking on collaborations with Stimming in 2010, Lazarusman has carved a unique role for himself as a slam poet come lyricist in the world of electronic music. A path which few have wandered without slipping into the sides of gimmicky house stabs and diva-esque realms, but Lazarus, who rarely prepares his delivery before recording, freestyles prose starkly contrasting the aforementioned - biting into heavier, often philosophical terrain.  One only needs to look so far as his latest track, “Breathe” to appreciate Mathebula’s ability in turning even the simplest topic into a commentary on constructs. His catalogue, which includes collaborations with Aki Bergen, Alex Dimou, Djuma Soundsystem, DJ T., Hyenah, Florian Kruse, Re.you, Tigerskin, and Till Von Sein, presents an ever expanding archive of Lazarusman’s inner thoughts. No subject is off the table for the Johannesburg based slam poet.

In our tenth installment of Movements, Lazarus exposes moments of his lyricism, but the focus of the mix falls on his proficiency on turntables. He builds from a sense of brooding driving the listener’s expectation down a line only to veer to an unforeseen plain. From here the journey progresses, beautifully twisting and turning like a moment of his word play, right until he delivers the final blow.

Mix 186 is a special one brought to us by one of South Africa's finest poets, DJs and artist Lazarusman aka Lazarus Mathebula. He's been hypnotizing dancefloors for almost a decade with his silky smooth spoken word poems beautifully woven into the tracks by some of top names in the electronic scene including Stimming, Kaldera, Chopstick & Jonjon, Xinobi, Dilby & DJ T. 

His recent Spotify hit Oceans of My Mind with Kaldera released on HMWL has racked over 2 millions streams on Spotify mainly driven by the loungy remix by Urmet K as well as remixes by SURAJ, Simina Grigoriu and Moe Danger. In the very end of the mix you can get a preview of his forthcoming release with Urmet K on Magician on duty.

For the over a decade The Lazarusman has been spreading mixing spoken word with electronic music and infecting dance floors with his unique lyrics and take on poetry. Having collaborated with a slew of international artists like, Stimming, Florian Kruse, Tigerskin, Hyenah, DJ. T, Phonique and appearances on labels like Get Physical, Diynamic, HMWL, Moon Harbour, Rebellion, Freerange, Noir Music and many more. The Lazarusman has solidify his status as one of the most influential people in dance music right now.

His solo live performances fuse the current mood of any dance floor as well as a consideration of the past, present and future elements of deep house, techno, disco and house. It’s an idiosyncratic approach to DJing and performing spoken word, with regular appearances in Moscow, Lisbon, Zurich, Berlin and Hamburg proof of the effectiveness of this one of way of delivering performance.

I thought it fitting to cap the journey  off with music that has been on heavy rotation while I was out wandering the continent.
