"This Slumber Session mix gave me a great opportunity to make a playlist of something I would want to listen to when unwinding, or to just fall asleep to. I wanted it to be able to exist in the background, without focus, whilst at the same time having elements of detail and beauty scattered amongst the layers of sound unravelling as the mix progresses.

In some ways you can think of it as a soundtrack to a dream. There are moments of calm flowing smoothly into more abstract sections. Textures build to go from sparse emotive landscapes to darker, brooding moments of tension. I wanted it to be dynamic, taking in a variety of styles and influences, whilst giving the listener a coherent experience and painting some interesting images in their minds.

It also gave me the chance to put in a lot of unreleased tracks of mine. I make a wide variety of styles outside of my normal output, so it was great to have an outlet for some of that material. There are also a lot of field recordings I've made over the last few years throughout the mix, including some from my travels. The opening section of music features the sounds of walks in Sydney and San Francisco, which at the time was just some subconscious grabbing of sound recordings without any kind of artistic purpose - it just sounded cool at the time. It seemed fitting when I realised where the sounds were from, as the mix would have been the perfect playlist for a lot of my sleep deprived travels.

I ended up getting so involved putting together this mix that there's a lot of live tweaks of outboard reverb and delay units layered on certain tracks to try and get the sense of space I wanted to achieve and give the mix some breathing space. I find that ambient music can be incredibly beautiful and achieve the range of emotions other music can. I hope that you enjoy the musical selection and can immerse yourself in it, even with the emphasis away from the hooks and rhythms of traditional electronic dance music."

"To me, the following selection of music could be described as psychedelic, without making distinctions in genres or BPM’s. Some of these songs may be dream-inducing, some of them nightmare-inducing, but they all bring me a certain feeling of unreality, as if they were snapshots of altered landscapes or distorted memories. It can also be thought of as the soundtrack for an initiation to psychonautics. One way or another, it is music that I find deeply enjoyable no matter what altered state you're in."

@International-Feel label boss Mark Barrott found a tape called Songs For Sunsets in a charity shop in Paris and made it his mission to hunt down the unknown artist behind it, eventually tracking down Australian library composer Len Leise. Fast forward and Len is about to release another nature themed EP, Music For Forests, this time through International Feel (out 8th December) and not limited to cassette. The best slumber sessions do more than just let your mind wander, they take you away to another place entirely. This one does just that. Currently counting down the days until the release of Berlin collective Average Negative’s wondrous debut vinyl LP and art book, Shadow Mountain, we’re stoked to have a mix from the project’s Sydney-based synth-pop wizard Marco Vella. Slicker than your average snoozy slumber session, his mix sets your imagination free. It is a wild camping adventure that fast-forwards through time and lets you watch as day turns to night and lush green mountain forests alive with the sounds of panpipes and flutes turn into unexplored moonlit lands littered with cicadas. Things take a turn for the industrial as the daydreamers stumble on a secret government base and inadvertently involve themselves in some real sci-fi sounding shit before – as often happens in dreams – all danger melts away to the sounds of funky psychedelic bass-slapping. “I wanted to make a mix that showcased emerging artists from around the globe that have been an inspiration to my music and myself,” explains the Sydney producer. “I also added a few tracks from the archives that were a major influence to me at the time of recording Shadow Mountain. I hope this mix doesn’t bring on the z’s, but is ‘slumber’ enough to help you kick back and blow the froth off a couple.” Mission accomplished.
