Khruangbin is a three-piece band from Texas, formed of Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald Johnson on drums.

Mark and DJ's roots are in R&B, Hip Hop and Gospel having played within the same gospel band for years. Both professional musicians, Mark began teaching Laura how to play bass in the summer of 2009. As such, Laura quickly developed a huge passion for the instrument and the aesthetic it brought to music she loved. Having worked studiously on developing her skills, both Mark and Laura were invited to tour with Ninja Tune's YPPAH supporting Bonobo across his 2010 American tour. 

The tour galvanised the two of them to start making music together more seriously, sowing the first seeds of Khruangbin. Taking influence from 1960's Thai funk - Khruangbin literally translates to "Engine Fly" in Thai - the two took a trip to a barn deep in the Texas countryside and jammed for the entire weekend, developing a sound which was steeped the bass heavy, psychedelic sound of their inspiration. Khruangbin was formed, with D.J. the natural go to for drums.

Having kept in touch, Bonobo included Khruangbin's 'A Calf Born In Winter' on his 2013 'Late Night Tales' compilation. In addition to increasing the Stateside following the band has built, the release has helped Khruangbin in topping both the US & UK 'Last FM' fastest growing artists whilst 'A Calf Born In Winter' continues to be one of the most popular single downloads from the compilation. The band recently signed to LNT offshoot Night Time Stories, with an album planned in 2015.

Avonmore album, now the LP gets some very special remix treatment by a connoisseur selection
of disco artists from around the globe. The celebrated and taste-making likes of Leo Zero, Ray Mang, Prins
Thomas, Justin Robertson, Leftside Wobble, Idjut Boys, Man Power and many more all lend their
well trained ears and serve up some sizzling new versions of the superb originals.

Bryan Ferry is one of the UK’s foremost singer songwriters, a pop artist and musician whose
appeal has spanned five decades. With his elegant virtuoso performances as the
front man Roxy Music, and his subsequent illustrious solo career Ferry has achieved numerous
accolades and has been a great source of influence and inspiration for
ensuing generations of musicians. As such, a project like this allows some of these established and rising talents the
unique opportunity to add their own spin to Ferry’s singular style.

A broad palette of sounds, scenes and genres are traversed along the course of this absorbing
collection. It kicks off in style with two different versions of ‘Loop Di Li’. Leo Zero’s take is sun-kissed and breezy, 
with trilling riffs and sweeping synths. UK disco don Ray Mang then offers a
more pumping, groove driven effort that wraps Ferry’s unique vocals up in neo-Balearic cool.
Next up, the marvellous ‘Midnight Train’ is offered as a late night and romantic affair by Johnson
Somerset, a cosmic chugger by Man Power and a characteristically left of centre house version
by the inimitable Idjut Boys, famed for being remix kings.

Fans of dubbed out and slo-motion disco will love the brilliant Beard of Concern mix of ‘Soldier of
Fortune,’ before five fascinating versions of ‘Driving Me Wild’ take in lush 80s nostalgia,
swaggering dub, mechanical psychedelic disco, horizontal grooves and elastic kosmiche from
Johnson Somerset, Leftside Wobble, Justin Roberton’s Deadstock 33s, Leo Zero and Ray Mang
respectively.

The latter half of the album finds nu-disco pioneer Prins Thomas masterfully flip the title track into
a broody affair with corrugated bass and tense, scintillating synth lines, whilst PBR Streetgang
work ‘One Night Stand’ into a deep and synthetic disco bomb that will have dance-floors in
raptures. Elsewhere, Idjut Boys, Ray Mang, Leo Zero, Johnson Somerset offer more expert reworks.
Ambient Pioneer Ulrich Schnauss has the coveted task of adapting ‘Johnny & Mary’, Ferry’s timeless collaboration with Norwegian man of the moment Todd Terje.
Hidden Orchestra layer grand instrumentals and sweeping strings into a dramatic and theatrical
remix of ‘Send in the Clowns.’ Leftside Wobble is then left to bring us back down to earth with an
intoxicating brew of molten synths, woozy chords and smeared pads that sooth mind, body and
soul.

The rich source material here, along with the wealth of stars chosen to remix it, all make for
another fascinating chapter in the life of one of the UK’s most cherished artists.

2015 will see German techno mainstay Stephan Bodzin ready to unleash his next full-length musical vision on the world. Entitled “Powers of Ten”, the 10-track album will land in June 2015 on his own Herzblut Recordings and provides another great insight into the melodically rich muscle mind of this modern great.
Says Stephan Bodzin of the LP: “Powers of Ten has been with me all my life and is named after a book that has been my background hiss, its confusing truth is my only real faith and its infinity shows me its finiteness. The album is about harmonies, melodies, rhythms. It is an homage to Bob Moog, full of techno beats and sounds and space and party and ecstasy and dancing and listening, and crying and feeling. It is a journey, a philosophy of life, a view of the world, a vague perception. It is my wife, my children, my family, my friends, my passion, my enemy, my greatest fulfillment, my fear, my deepest peace, my power, all my love.”
As such, this album is hugely personal and is filled with cerebral messages and well thought out concepts. All this shines through and makes it an all the more engaging listen from start to finish. Kicking off with the spine tingling chords and louche beats of ‘Singularity’ cuts like ‘Lila’ then continue to confirm that Stephan Bodzin has a classical understanding of melody that is way beyond your average.
‘Blue Giant’, ‘Wir’ and ‘Ix’ all manage to be uplifting and thoughtful at the same time as driven and groovy, whilst ‘Birth’ comes on with a hymnal high note, long tailed pads and subtly shifting beats. The ghostly grooves of ‘Zulu’ mark a majestic mid point to the album, which then continues to seduce with spiritual synths and more beautiful melodies on cuts like ‘Odyssee’ as well as the album’s standout title track.
Unfolding coherently and in soothing fashion, this album once again proves that few producers in the modern world have a knack for melody and an ear for sonic ingenuity quite like Stephan Bodzin.

Taking influence from 1960's Thai funk - their name literally translates to "Engine Fly" in Thai - Khruangbin’s debut album ‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’ is steeped in the bass-heavy, psychedelic sound of their inspiration, Tarantino soundtracks, and surf-rock cool. The Texan trio is formed of Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald “DJ” Johnson on drums.

‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’ was recorded at their spiritual home, a remote barn deep in the Texas countryside where their first rehearsals took place. The band listened to a lot of different types of music on the long drives out to the country but their favourites were the '60s and '70s Thai cassettes gleaned from the cult Monrakplengthai blog and compilations of southeast Asian pop, rock, and funk. This had a heavy impact on the direction of the band, the scales they used, and the inflection of the melodies; which coupled with the spaciousness of the Texan countryside culminated in Khruangbin forming their exotic, individual sound. 

“We feel like there is an ease that comes from being immersed in a space, away from the distractions of the city and everyday life. We make our music in a barn, in the Texas hill country, because it makes sense to us. Being there allows us to make music that comes naturally, and that’s what we wanted this album to be. We wanted to make a record that just let the music happen, and we hope that’s what you can hear.”

"Everything was going to hell. That was the feeling i had the time these tracks were made, roughly 1995-1997. It was getting more and more difficult to have our records distributed, and people seemed only interested in polished club house junk.
The legendary Acid Planet parties in The Hague ground to a halt in an implosion of mind numbing sets of 180 BPM empty acid lines fuelled by every drug you can imagine, I-f closed the Hotmix shop and went even deeper underground. I was sick and tired of acid, so a time of musical exploration started. I tried revisiting my industrial past, building on darker themes, and it was a challenge to incorporate newer styles like jungle or illbient as well. I had no idea if these tracks would ever see the light of day.
These tracks were my way of staying sane through a transitional period in the history of the West Coast sound and eventually, a new path towards electro, italo and wave became clear through the musical fog. The tracks were never released or even heard, and the tapes ended up in storage, only to be uncovered this year. I hope that almost 20 years later, they still carry some relevance. I know they do for me.

DJ Mitsu The Beats (@mitsu-the-beats) kneels down at the ultimate electric piano altar, dedicating the third volume of his Beat Installments series to the Fender Rhodes. 

Within the dozen tracks, the legendary Jazzy Sport rep celebrates his undying love of the illustrious, and beautiful instrument, unparalleled in the central role it has played in jazz, soul, funk and hip-hop over the last 50 odd years. As a result, all 12 tracks are PVA glued together by their shared warm timbre — perfect for the wintry throes of November.

Any of the tracks could have made the cut. The likes of "Totemic" or "Cultivate" with their slothful drum fiddling and Sunday-snoozed bass and keys fillings. "The Valley" and its mile-high, breezy tendencies. Or maybe even the stark and spacious make-up of "Gateway".

In the end, the aptly named "Pilot" soars the highest. Unsurprisingly, it's the Rhodes taking centre stage but the keys are appropriately co-piloted by a dank and drowsy snare-bassline combo.

It lands on December 19.

STORIES FROM ELSEWHERE  –By RHIAN SHEEHAN

A series of enchanting instrumental works, Stories From Elsewhere is Rhian Sheehan’s most evocative album to date - an excursion into a soundscape of tender ethereal textures, brooding cinematic string arrangements, and playful experimental lullabies. Sheehan has encapsulated a world of serenity and melancholia within this 12-track album. Stories From Elsewhere is a musical landscape to get lost in.

His first full-length album since Standing in Silence (2009), Sheehan transgresses Ambient and Post-Rock genres and moves deeper into a unique world of haunting atmospheres, reflective ambient electric guitar washes, childlike melodies, and stirring moments of elation.

Principally conceived by Sheehan in his Wellington, New Zealand based home studio; his strong sense of vision for the album’s live representation informed key collaborations, which are bound to extend to the performance of Stories From Elsewhere. Contributing artists included: Jeff Boyle (Jakob), Raashi Malik (Rhombus), Andy Hummel (Rosy Tin Teacaddy), Steve Bremner (The Adults), Ryan Prebble (The Nudge), and string players from the NZSO. Sheehan also enlisted the talents of Lee Prebble to help him put finishing touches on the album.

Sheehan describes how some of the music from the album came about:

 “The album as a whole came about via experimentation. I’ve been moving further away from computer made electronica over the last few years and tinkering away in my home studio with old children’s musical toys and gadgets I’ve collected over the years, working out ways to make interesting and unusual sounds. I mixed half of the album with Lee Prebble, which was good fun. We ran the drums and strings through an old 60’s plate reverb to get a more nostalgic atmospheric tone. Most of the textures on this album were made with electric guitars and vocals run through various outboard effects. I wanted to make an album that sounded very natural and organic - a collection of sonic stories that hopefully will be listened to as one body of work.”

“’Little Sines’ was conceived on my baritone ukulele and an old 80’s toy sampler I use to record and playback sine waves on. I then physically created the main melody on a handmade DIY music-box I own, but didn’t really think it was a particularly interesting melody until my young son began singing it relentlessly. I then knew I had an idea worth pursuing. This melody pops up throughout the album in various forms.”

 “’Creation Myths’ bizarrely came about via the main melody of ‘Little Sines’. One day I mistakenly placed the music-box piano roll melody from ‘Little Sines’ upside down. After some tinkering, I ended up with the finished track.“

“’The Upper Sky’ was a late night collaborative effort with my wife, Raashi and good friend, Jeff Boyle. I had a rough idea sketched out and they both helped guide the piece in the final direction.”

“’La Boîte à Musique’ was the piece that took the longest to complete. Again, the basic tune was conjured up via experimenting with old musical toy instruments. Essentially, it’s an experiment in the sonic manipulation of a simple melody. I had written a rough string arrangement for the outro section that I then passed on to collaborator, Ryan Youens, to put some finishing touches on.”

“’Nusquam’ I guess came about subliminally due to the soundtrack work I do. It’s a very filmic and emotive piece. I’m emotionally connected to it. The melody came very quickly, but I didn’t realise how affecting it could be until much later when I played a rough version to a friend.“

 “’Nocturne 1985’ was predominately created using an old 8bit toy keyboard. The only other instrument on this piece was the drums played by Steve Bremner (that enter mid way through the track). This is the most ‘electronic’ piece on the album. It has kind of a reflective early 80’s game arcade sound to it”.

The imagery for Stories From Elsewhere is the result of a collaboration between Sheehan and artist, Kieran Rynhart. After discovering Rynhart’s work at a local art gallery and falling in love with a print (which now hangs on Sheehan’s living room wall), Sheehan approached Rynhart with some ideas he wished to explore for the album’s artwork. The beautiful results are displayed throughout the Stories From Elsewhere artwork.
