Continuum-collage piece by Lithuanian composer Arturas Bumšteinas created in 2015 from incidental music sampled from various Lithuanian radio drama's from the 1950's to 2000's. A strange heady brew which juxtaposes music, sound effects, rudiments of vocal expression and various acoustic instruments among others in a compelling cut-up, reminding at times of People Like Us or Dirk Schaeffer's recent work for Peter Tscherkassky's movies. Bobby Would - STYX
Messing around with Greek gods can be dangerous. It might cause curses far beyond the physics. Bobby Would choose “STYX” as the title of his latest album. It links to a swampy zone in Greek mythology, where STYX is a heavenliness, and a river, that forms the boundary between Earth and the Underworld. Bobby Would says, “Time is only currency”. STYX is the place, where no currency exists. It absorbs all living, while creating new. Bobby Would, whose emotive Low Company releases distributed unfussy, magnetic, yet melodic serenades, that injected lo-fi guitar pop new drama orbs, created two 13-minute-long tape sides under the “STYX” guidance, that work against time while creating some. Like a lullaby, that loops in your dreams forever, each side features short, yet endless songs, stranded in a zone, where light and darkness form a bizarre union, that glooms eternally. Driven by guitar melodies of delicate beauty, that drift fluently from silky weeping pop to otherworldly psychedelics, he croons monotone poetry, that floats river-like into the unconscious of its receiver, just to create a muddy zone for new utopias. A short new vital sign full of miraculous powers by the Vienna based artist, that welcomes all into a twilight zone of drone punk, garage wave, velvet surf-riffs, and all that dusty rock ‘n’ roll fuzz. Ferryman netherworld music, made for those need the curse of a new mythological sign.

Lindisfarne has always held a special fascination for my wife and I, so it is no surprise to me that I would eventually create some music about it. Hopefully you can be swept away by the music but not the tide ;-)

Background
Ever since 635, when King Oswald gave the Holy Island of Lindisfarne to St Aidan to establish his monastery, the island has been a place of pilgrimage. The road was not constructed until 1954 and until then the vertical poles were the only indicators of the safe route between the mainland and island. The sight of the poles stretching across the sand and mud is one of the most iconic views in Northumberland and to walk the route away from the road and follow in the footsteps of our medieval ancestors is a wonderful experience.

With 'The Pilgrims Way', there was actually very little research involved. Lindisfarne was a place both my wife and I loved and it was really created from a simple low whistle melody. I also included 'Foley' sounds to help in the immersion for the listener. Having got some initial positive feedback from some musical friends, I decided to try and create a series of pieces based around Lindisfarne. Given it's history and unique natural setting, there seemed plenty of material to go at.

London born and based DJ, Producer, PAN and PTP affiliate Flora Yin-Wong jumps in for episode 8 with "Flower over the Stone" a 30 minute sound collage loosely based around the idea of dreams and Akira Kurosawa’s '夢 Yume'.

Flora draws together samples, field recordings, re-pitched vocals and various electro-acoustic sounds to move through several vignettes and themes that the film addresses: Universal disasters, death, spirituality, childhood, art, and man's mistakes regarding the world. 

"Flower over the Stone" combines beat driven experimental, liturgic ambient and fourth world, scratchy samples and auto-tuned R&B style vox highlights to make for a diverse, filmic soundscape.

US-born, Stockholm-based minimalist artist and apprenticing organ tuner Kali Malone gave a special organ performance in TivoliVredenburg's Grote Zaal as opening of Le Guess Who? 2019. The performance was part of The Bug's curated program for the festival. 

We can now share two exceptionally beautiful pieces from the performance: 'Sacrificial Code' and 'Glory Canon III'. Both are deeply immersive and mesmerizing tracks, drawing in listeners with Kali Malone's well-known warmth and timelessness.

"Philosophically you can regard this music as a fresh view of the ideas of Ferdinand de Saussure - Structuralism and Deconstruction. It is a new approach when it comes to linguistics, the traditional music of the area, where Greece stands as a crossroads and future intelligences. I was interested to hide a fundamental philosophical question in music which would have the same qualities and immediacy as the authentic local music of the area."
