Lehult is back on the roll after living the rockstar life that naturally follows a sold out debut release.
But just like with sex and marriage, it’s the second time that you really have to make count: after some overwhelming feedback for Lucky Charmz’ “Follow Me To Flottbek Falls” EP, Lehult returns with a follow-up that adds some spin to the curveball.

The “Let’s Get Playa” EP introduces three core members of the Lehult crew: Liem (pictured on the cover, Gin&Tonic in hand), Eddie Ness and Johan Kaseta all take their shots in mixed couplets, delivering some machine driven, sunlit house with a refreshing, ice cold splash.

“Bassforce XXL” sets up the A-sides’ sunrise beach vibe with an uplifting chord progression and a fruity, dynamic bassline — the kind that makes a musician bounce around his studio grinning sheepishly, transporting that same effect to the dance floor.
Then, A2 “M-Trax”, while revolving around the same sunlit feeling, plunges deeper with swirling birdsong melodies and raw, thumpin’ drums’n’congas. Almost a rhythm track, its’ simple yet challenging structure - emotive chords, a yearning for the held off bassline - creates an absorbed moment on the dancefloor.

The title track “Let’s Get Playa” on the B-side sees Eddie team up with Johan Kaseta—who has already silently put out a limited cassette beat tape on Lehult and has become infamous for his wild one-deck DJ-Sets. “Playa” is a seductive cut of low-slung breezy house that doesn’t fail to surprise — before sending you driving into the sunset on your quad with the EP’s extra-long, wavey outro.

PREMIERE: Joe Davies - Errol Dub [Smallville Records]

Following his debut LP on Smallville Records in April, Joe Davies returns with a fresh take on the opening track Hi-Life, now reimagined as the Frankfurt Mix, offering a new mask, outfit, and flavour in his forthcoming Pardon My Late Response 4-track EP on the same imprint.

This dub-house track exudes sophistication, with its echoing chords, textured soundscapes, and off-kilter percussion. Wherever you are in the world, it evokes a sense of warmth, its timing especially poignant as the festival season draws to a close — a welcomed embrace.

Elevated to another level from the original, this version retains the soft bird sounds, teasing conversation, and dreamlike tranquillity, yet carries a driving force beneath its surface. The track, with its hazy finish, offers a fitting close to the EP, as we watch the sun go down.

Listening to both versions of Hi-Life back-to-back is highly recommended. It’s great to see Joe return so quickly under this alias, focusing on the deeper, more floaty side of his productions.

Pardon My Late Response, including Hi-Life (Frankfurt Mix), will be available on vinyl and digital via Smallville Records on 13th September.

But joe is no newcomer, his earlier work under the DJ Assam moniker shows the quality that has been there from day one. As a long time follower, I was delighted when Joe agreed to provide a mix for the series.

First making waves as DJ Assam, founder and part of the label Lehult from Hamburg in the mid-2010s, Joe Davies took on minimal techno from the 2000s and made it deeper, cultivating an aesthetic both soulful and dynamic. Commended for the depth and quality of his debut LP on Smallville Records and a sought-after follow-up 12“ in 2024, Joe has carved out a unique sound for himself across genres. His music often transcends the functional qualities of dance music, using the framework of sound and sampling to create tracks that speak to us as much as they move us.

'Spinning Grounds' is all about opening grounds - for both newcomers and experienced selectors alike - to spin music outside of club spaces to explore a wide range of genres from house, Detroit, deep house, dub house, ambient, breaks, UK garage, minimal, dub techno to .....

One hour from my set at the Fellice Records night, upstairs at Paloma Bar in Berlin. Sharing the bill with @nico-lahs and @effgee, two great house selectors, I packed a bag full of warm, organic records to balance the freezing cold outside. The place was packed and the energy on the dancefloor was beautiful.
