About Badenya Les Frères Coulibaly

Formed in Nuna, located in northwestern Burkina Faso, Badenya les Freres Coulibaly are part of a family of griots (musician storytellers, also known as jali and jeli in West Africa) and are members of the Bwa ethnic group.
Originally composed by the twins Lassina and Ousseni and known as les Freres Coulibaly, the group grew up to 8 members of the Coulibaly family and are called Badenya les Freres Coulibaly.
Lassina and Ousseni traveled for the first time to Europe in 1989. Invited by the “Atelier of Ethnomusicology” in Geneva to teach African percussion and dance. From there, they traveled to Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands and the UK. The public was instantly conquered by their natural ease, their radiation, which emanated from these young musicians freshly arrived from Burkina Faso. Their togetherness seemed perfect an inalterable, no disagreement seemed possible between them.
Invited to the Montreux Jazz Festival they performed under the artistic direction of Quincy Jones for an evening with Miles Davis. In reaction to this success, Claude Nobs and Quincy Jones invited the trio for 2 additional nights and they got to play with Georges Clinton, Georges Benson, Al Jarreau, Toots Thielmans, the rappers Kool Moe Dee, Mel Mellow and many others.
In 1993, Solo, Lassina and Ousseni released their first album Anka-Dia. They flew to Tunisia to teach percussion and the next year, flew to Spain, (Madrid and Barcelona) to be part of an African festival with Salif Keita, Cesaria Evora, Khaled and Johnny Clegg. Then les Freres Coulibaly were invited by Baaba Maal in Senegal for his tenth anniversary in the music world. There they met Peter Gabriel and shared several exceptional performances with Youssou N’Dour.
2000-2001: Release of the second album “Seniwe (Solidarity) with the entire family. The promotional tour for the album took the group to America, Israel, Malaysia, Germany and Austria. The following year they flew everywhere in Europe and in June, Carlos Santana invited the band to perform with him at the Letzigrund stadium in Zurich.
This track was selected by Putumayo World Music, a record label known for its compilation albums featuring various artists from different cultural backgrounds. "African Groove" is one of the albums in their collection, typically featuring a selection of tracks from African musicians or groups. These albums are often curated to showcase the diversity and richness of African music, ranging from traditional to contemporary genres such as Afrobeat, Highlife, Soukous, and more. "African Groove" would likely offer listeners a vibrant and rhythmic journey through the musical traditions of Africa. It's a great way for people to explore and appreciate the vast array of sounds.

Always loved the original version of Boroto since long time ago, and was playing this in a dj set and while transitioning to other tune realized that could be a good idea for an edit for more danceable purposes. The first night at Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Festival in Sète is always special, and last summer, WheelUP set the tone in style! Seamlessly transitioning from broken beat to drum 'n' bass and jazz, it was a masterclass in leading a crowd with an eclectic and dynamic set. I wanted him on Le Mellotron! A few weeks later, we had the opportunity to bring Danny at Duro De Matar in Lisbon to record a set for the YouTube channel. So here he is, WheelUP bringing the West London sound to Lisbon and now for you all to enjoy worldwide through Le Mellotron! - Lekin

A few words from WheelUP: 
After playing at Worldwide I connected with the owners of Le Mellotron and DDM in Lisbon, then I was invited out to come and play a Bruk set in collaboration with them, it was a dream come true and I thought let me come to Lisbon link up with the crew and roll out some West London Sound for Le Mellotron and it was fun and vibes to come through and hit the decks with the crew. My sound has been described as Broken Beat, Bruk, West London Sound and Nu Jazz. It touches on Soulful House, Afro latin, African polyrthymic drum patterns etc But to me its just a felling and if it feels good for my spirit and raises my vibration then that is the music I am going to play without the need for a defining characteristic. Musically as I grew up in West London and had my studio next door to Bugz In The Attic, IG Culture, Kaidi Tatham etc I was exposed to a lot of good music and ideas even before I was making Bruk and I feel my responsibility (now as an artist signed to the legendary Tru Thoughts label) that I should respect the OG’s and the foundation (the CoOp massive) but equally support the new generation that is coming through and collectively as a community we continue to push our sound to the next level. All the while playing music that makes the people want to have a WheelUP during the set!!!

To some this mix may come as little surprise, a familiar face now with an independent story to tell. Baba Ali has recently went solo following a previously longstanding pairing as part of electronic dance duo Voices Of Black. The duo were signed to Wolf + Lamb and rose to success in line with the prominence of the label. International dates across America, Europe and beyond all followed suit. However, life goes on and individuality requires an outlet. Baba Ali has since launched what looks to be a promising solo embarkment and recently released his debut EP in the form of "Nomad". Low slung soul with a hypnotic twist, the EP was a fierce statement. 

We are delighted to be able to welcome him to contribute to our mix series, he describes his tape as follows. 

"The mix is essentially the music I was listening to while working on 'NOMAD'. I also wanted to dedicate the mix to the migrants who are currently risking their lives every day, navigating dangerous waters in search for a better life."

The multi-instrumentalist sidewoman, arranger, and film composer, once again provea us how it’s simple yet hard to combine new wave, post-punk, synth pop, ambient and Arabic influences. And in order to do so, she joins her forces with *Malik Djoudi*, *Arthur Simonini* and *UssaR* in this latest project.
