The Upload

A little over a year go, we got our hands on the mysterious slab of vinyl known as 22a #001 and instantly fell in love with the lo-fi, woozy and organic sounds of London’s 22a Music crew.

Although the members of the 22a collective (Henry Wu, Tenderlonious, Mo Kolours, Al Dobson Jr., Jeen Bassa, Reginald Omas Mammode IV) run some solo projects outside of the label it’s pretty incredible to hear how complementary all of their productions or mixes. A crew of musical kindred spirits no doubt!

A couple months ago we received a brilliant guest mix from Henry Wu (check it!) and we’re thrilled to be getting another one from the @22amusic crew: @JeenBassa

Brighton-based producer and multi-instrumentalist returns with his future blend of boogie, p-funk, disco and soul on his sophomore album ‘Whole Again Hooligan’ (out 6th March) – a record that allows us all to escape the divisive world around us, a retreat of positivity, and of course – with good times guaranteed. “Choppa Fiesta” was born out of a desire to play more up-tempo tunes in his DJ sets. Using a re-sampling technique from past recording sessions, “Choppa Fiesta” merges broken beat, house, Latin and afro-beat, with Tristian Banks driving the track forward on the timbales

Third single from Maori musician, producer and trumpet player Isaac Aesili's upcoming "Hidden Truths" album on Bastard Jazz. "Wild feat. Ladi6’ is a heavy downbeat future soul joint with stratospheric synths layered over driving beats that build alongside the elegant vocal weavings of New Zealand's first lady of soul, Ladi6.

Isaac Aesili is an Internationally acclaimed solo artist and the producer and creative force behind Funkommunity, Sorceress and Karlmarx. Isaac’s original productions have been supported internationally by DJs such as Gilles Peterson (BBC Radio 6 Music), Benji B (BBC 1), and Lefto (Belgium, Worldwide FM). His trumpet playing features on many collaborations including ‘Layer’ by Julien Dyne (Wonderful Noise/BBE) and ‘Midnight in Peckham’ by Chaos in the CBD (Rhythm Section). A world-renowned musician on both trumpet and percussion, Isaac is a member of the Lord Echo band. His music fuses Soul, Funk, Jazz, Afro and Latin styles with R&B, Hip Hop and Electronic music. Isaac’s much anticipated sophomore solo album “Hidden Truths” is out on Bastard Jazz (NYC) in 2020.

This time, we air a healing mix from Deon Jamar, a Theo Parrish-endorsed Detroit native and DJ. Deon's musical roots stem from the crates of his father, a long-time DJ who kicked off in the early 80s. Besides playing records, Deon takes joy in organising events of his own like "Black Music" and "Healin' Session". Deon takes inspiration from many different genres and eras, with his breadth showcased through this live recording from Christmas Nite @ UFO Factory in Detroit, at a party hosted by Isaac Prieto, where he opened up for Norm Talley. Trust us, it's a vibe.

In this current age of awakening, absorbing pain and the transformative roads forward have become a daily cycle. One as essential as the process of body hydration through water. Many volatile and soul shaking truths have become evident and an entire country is now in a desperate state of soul searching. Deep and uncomfortable historical realities are now stretching into every pocket of public consciousness, representing a pendulum swing that feels foundational. It’s the people’s paths, involving deeply transformative private conversations, prolific protesting, masterful strategizing/organizing, business sector transparency, and much more. There’s an abundance of unpredictable moments that continue to organically write the history of this movement, providing a sense of hope the world desperately needs. 

The musical backdrop scoring these times, and those that led us here, remain a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit. A shining beacon that has pushed back the forces of inequality with great measure for decades. Let The Ghosts Chit-Chat is the first of many mixes summarizing the energy present within the United States during this era of social unrest and the energy that has awakened so many individuals living. The musical soundtrack to the soul searching process of the United States and the beautiful states of art that grows here despite the turmoil.

Well well well. Look who's back!

After 11 years of monthly editions of my Music Is My Sanctuary show I decided I needed a creative break which ended up taking two years. It certainly wasn't for a lack of passion for music or for sharing it with all of you. I felt like I lost my sense of purpose with the show and I certainly didn't want to simply go through the motions if the passion wasn't there. Creative endeavours shouldn't be forced. 

It feels great to start this show again and I'm excited about the future of it and most all of sharing music with you.
