Shouts to everyone who tuned in LIVE. We apologize for the technical difficulties in the first 30 minutes. Joe made sure to make up for it with a very diverse and educational set ranging from plenty of forgotten gems and a few new joints scattered throughout the show. There is something refreshing about playing these specific classic songs from the 90's & 00's. No one really plays this style on the radio anymore outside of the expected/popular classics that you hear over and over again (if that makes sense). We will continue to bring it back home more often as well as providing you with new future music.

Iman Omari on the other hand came out firing from the gates with amazing original material and a few standout selects from some other great artists like Kaytranada. Iman is really a genuine person inside and out. You can hear it through his music and interview. Look out for his Soulection White Label in the near future.

Mindfulness is derived from Buddhist art as an act of meditation and accepting others, and has gained worldwide popularity as a distinctive method to handle emotions. A Sol Mechanic has the slow, nuanced beats that parallel Handbook’s tracks, while Handbook’s unpredictably swift beats pulse in unison to A Sol Mechanic’s nostalgic flow. This EP will bring variety and a tranquil sound to its audience in a sensational, attentive way.

A Sol Mechanic’s contributions in this EP, named “All Along” and “Elevate”, alongside Handbook’s releases, “Goldmines” and “Only just Met”, are proud - they truly allow the emotions to flow within the balance of pitch and rhythm. Enraptured, dreamy and enchanted, mixed with a sorrowful grieving, this is an EP for the listeners to relate to within their own practice of mindfulness.

Italdred’s elemental artists work to bring you musical loops, while remaining loyal to its sound played, with a wide variety of timbres and dynamics. The latter may still be an element of linear ordering within synth, looping and guitar that leave your mind high.

A Sol Mechanic - "The first time I heard Handbook and his original style I knew there was potential for a major collab between us. Being a big fan of his work and having crossed paths with him through various collectives, it seemed inevitable that we'd link up to create a collection we truly believe in. When Rob proposed a collaboration EP to be released on Italdred with Handbook himself, I jumped at the opportunity and am very grateful for doing so. "Mindfulness" explores our deep understanding of each other's creative inspiration and how we can create a profound landscape through collaborative thought."

Handbook - "A Sol Mechanic had been on my radar for some time and over the years I began hearing a lot about his development as a producer. I tuned into his music earlier this year and was blown away. Rob, at Italdred, reached out to me asking if I wanted to work on a split EP with ASM and I didn’t need to think too hard about it.

Alongside ASM, I wanted to create something powerful, but relaxing. Something that would leave an impact but wasn’t a chore to listen to. Something with an obvious feeling, but left the listener wanting to listen again and pick up on some of the more subtle aspects of the tracks. Something that left the listener respecting the craft of what was playing and enjoying what was going on. I feel that Mindfulness encapsulates that."

Out Of The Cloud is some sort of full circle for me. It’s a disclosure from the last EP when we moved from the house next to the junkyard and a fabric that made coffins (from the period I wrote Jane’s Junkyard.) We moved to a village at the border of the Veluwe. I grew up in a similar village near the dunes at the other side of the country, so returning to nature has become a returning point to truly realize where I come from.

Out Of The Cloud is the transition between leaving all the bad things behind and moving on. Finally in nature again, finding peace, tranquility and balance in our lives. The isolation confronted me a lot for who I am. This mini-album is a metaphor for escaping and leaving super dense urban areas and enjoying and accepting the great wide open.

Emotional Response and Meda Fury Records are delighted to come together to present Sad City’s long waited debut LP.  After critically acclaimed EPs for Underwater Peoples and Phonica Special Editions, this stunning long player has been in gesgastion for years but arrives with perfect alacrity.

Northern Irish born, Glasgow based musician Gary Caruth has steadily been buildling a successful ouvere of releases from his 2011 debut Gestures EP to appearing on Emotional Response’s Schleißen series last Spring.  

Coming together across 9 tracks, but very much recorded as one listening experience, Shapes In Formation mixes a love of field recordings with deep ambient soundscapes atop incessant percussive loops.  The melancholic sonics bely ethereal tones that transport to that place where music and the silent reality of the world merges.  

Moving beyond his recent ambient explorations, side opener Rain points to something beyond, a swirling meld of vocal loops and rhythmic pulses that promise anew.   More follows in Pace (Movements I to IV) and Peoples Plants, taking the sonic exploration onwards, creating compositions of symphonic beauty that challenge the listener to travel on distant, tribal syncopation.

All this comes together with the rolling drum of Jam With Bettye.   A delicate balance of restrained percussion, hissing hats and the bliss of gospel Sundays create a tapestry that harks to Parrish’s Sound Signature as much to Cluster and Eno.   Finally, to end via Smoke, Water and Again, the album’s journey is shaped as a truly unique form(ation).

For the first half of the twentieth century, Ellis Island stood as the gateway to America. For some twelve million people, it was their first encounter with the land they hoped to call home. 

Directed by acclaimed artist JR, ELLIS tells the story of one such migrant. Starring Robert De Niro, the film winds its way through the crumbling hallways of the abandoned Ellis Island hospital complex, now home to JR’s Unframed art installation. It’s a place that reverberates with the hopes and fears of those who passed through it, the echoes especially resonant today.

Entwined with the narrative is a score composed by Woodkid, performed and co-written by Nils Frahm. The delicate piano motifs of Winter Morning I culminate in a crescendo of strings, while the harmonium swells on the B-side are the foundation for De Niro’s narration: an encomium for those who shaped modern America. 

There’s perhaps never been a more fitting time for this story, with all the proceeds going to the Sea Watch initiative, a non-profit charity dedicated to the protection and rescue of civilian refugees. 

Following a screening as part of Nils’s Barbican Weekender, the ELLIS score will be out July 8th, the same week as America’s great federal holiday. It will be available via Erased Tapes as a mini album on CD, vinyl and in digital format containing a 12-page picture booklet.


IN THE ARTISTS’ OWN WORDS:

Nils Frahm: ‘The opportunity to work on JR´s fantastic short film ELLIS came through my good friend Yoann aka Woodkid. We agreed on recording the piano parts in my studio in Berlin and so it happened that JR and Woodkid were guests at Durton studio on a wonderful late summer day in 2015. We managed to record all the crucial elements that day. The music fell in our laps and melted with the images: a wonderful experience. The film has stuck in my head ever since; it moved my heart and changed my soul.

A couple of weeks later I had to cancel a trip to Brussels because of a terror warning; all events got cancelled and I stayed home, having an unexpected day off. I felt rather depressed that day, thinking that the Europe I knew was already gone. I sat down at the harmonium, listened to Robert De Niro’s voice and played for the rest of the day. The result is ‘Winter Morning II,’ the B-side of the ELLIS soundtrack release.

Robert says it all in 17 minutes. We are not facing a refugee crisis. We are facing a crisis because we do not embrace, we do not sympathise and we cannot give up fear. Art can encourage so I hope this project will help fight the fear in all of us.’

Yoann Lemoine, aka Woodkid:  ‘Ellis is my second collaboration with JR after the New York City Ballet piece for Les Bosquets. I initially wanted this piece to sound like it was recorded on an old piano that we found in the ruins of Ellis Island, in the restricted area that is not open to the public, where JR pasted the pictures on the walls for the film Ellis.

I had worked with Nils before and I wanted him to create a sound for this piano part that I composed that was extremely gentle and organic. I wanted the listener to hear the mechanisms, the breathing of the instrument. I wanted it to be imperfect, to sound like a ruin, a trace, an echo, the way the pastings on the walls seem to be ghosts, almost imperceptible.

After a few rehearsals, Nils stripped down my piano parts and we removed almost all orchestration around the piano. He then worked on the extended version that is his interpretation of my piece, with Robert de Niro’s vocals.

Because this film and this recording is historically meaningful, it was important for us to create this piece as an echo to the immigration situation in Europe, and decided to release it in support of Sea Watch.’
