Happy Valentine’s Day!
Today it’s a huge honor to be able to share yet another special moment in dancefloor history eternalized by this recording from Roy Thode’s archive, all made possible thanks to his dear friend, Marsha Stern.
Recorded at the Underground on February 14th, 1981, this mix has been stored for just over 4 decades, to think that a spool of microscopic magnetized metal particles will give us the opportunity to re-experience what Roy Thode brought to the floor that night years before many of us were even born is goosebump inducing for us to say the least. At this point there should be no introduction needed to explain the virtuosity of this dancefloor maestro. Roy was a true Disc Jockey in essence, this is what he did, and his unique love for the craft can be heard loud and clear. Undoubtedly one of our biggest inspirations to us as DJs today.
We hope this mix takes you to a very special place because it surely came from one as Roy had self-titled this night “Music From My Heart”.
Let us all be Roy’s Valentine today - Love ❤️

A native of Brooklyn and current resident of Queens (New York), Jovonn has been active in the music scene since the age of 10. Supported by his mother, a keyboard player; and father, a guitar/bass player, who were aspiring R&B singers; he was nurtured with a solid musical foundation. Jovonn began his career as a Hip-Hop DJ at the age of 14 and started spinning records at those infamous New York block parties of the 80s where he was introduced to the growing New York House music scene, hanging out in seminal Brooklyn clubs such as Sapphires, Club Saturn and Club Serene. Years later clubs such as The Loft, The Choice, Snobbusters and Zanzibar, solidified his full commitment to House music. Exploding onto the house scene in 1991 with his second release, “Turn and Runaway” on Warner Bros. Records, (which reached number 10 on the Billboard chart and catapulted Jovonn on to the global scene) He then went on to set up his first record label, Goldtone Records, in the early 1990’s via Emotive Records (label compilation dropped on clone last year) and since then has produced more than 500 records in the House, R&B, Hip-Hop and Neo Soul genres, not to mention film scores and soundtracks although his true love has always been House music.
A pioneer of the NYC, New Jersey, 90’s house sound, he’s produced many classics with releases such as as “Back In the Dark”, “Garage Shelter”, “I Can’t Make Up My Mind”, “I Wanna Go To A Club” that all contain Jovonn’s distinctive vocal delivery and trade mark production, as the man says himself ‘gritty sounds, hard kicks, jazzy chords and a phat bassline’.
Other releases in Jovonn’s impressive discography include ‘Something About this Love’ (on WestEnd Records), “The Spirit” album (on Track Mode), and the “Blaque House” album on Code Red. More recently he’s delivered releases on prestigious labels such as Dogmatik, Objektivity, Deeply Rooted House and Apollonia, showcasing his talents to a new audience of house music lovers.
Jovonn launched his new label venture Body N’Deep in 2017 via clone distribution, dedicated to releasing the hottest deep and raw underground house tracks from Jovonn and his crew of producers and vocalists including tracks from legendary artists such as Karizma, Delano Smith and Louie Vega. His recent album ‘Timeless’ was released and received great reviews from DJ’s and Press, showcasing Jovonn’s trademark new jersey sound. Look out for a busy release schedule throughout 2020 on Body N’Deep and a new Jovonn album later in the year.

True House Stories interviews Smokin Jo the Female UK DJ. Smokin Jo (born Joanne Joseph) is a British DJ and record producer from London, England. She is the only female DJ to win the number one DJ in the world award by DJ Magazine in 1992,. She began her career in 1990 when she got her first set of decks. In 1991, Jo was given an opportunity to play at London gay club Trade at Turnmills which led to a residency there that would continue until 1993, launching her career. In 1992 she played in Ibiza for the first time, on the terrace at Space in Playa En Bossa, in the same year she was named as DJ Magazines No1 DJ. She also presented the BBC Radio 1 (essential selection) weekly report from Ibiza, between 2002 and 2006. Jo has gigged all over the world, and in every big club night, playing as far and wide as Japan, Germany, Brazil, Greece, USA (including Space in Miami) China and Singapore. In the UK she has played Ministry of Sound, Fabric, XOYO,The Beams, Printworks in London. She still plays in Ibiza for Glitterbox and now she has just finished writing a bestseller called "You Don't Need A Dick To Be A DJ" The book is her personal life story and she has laid out the path for everyone to learn from it as you will find it is very well written.

Kiss FM first broadcast 7 October 1985 as a pirate radio station, initially to South London then across the whole city, on 94FM. Kiss FM was founded by Gordon "Mac" McNamee, George Power (of London Greek Radio), and Tosca Jackson, with its engineer Pyers Easton. Transmitting seven-days from the start, it would be regularly taken off-air by the authorities and so became a weekend operation shortly afterwards. The station developed a cult and committed following across Greater London, with figures in the press at the time stating that the station commanded some 500,000 listeners while operating as an unlicensed pirate station, and an Evening Standard readers' poll in 1987 put Kiss second, behind Capital Radio. Gordon Mac approached a successful London club promoter, Guy Wingate, to discuss ways of improving the Kiss FM profile. As a result, Wingate launched the very successful Kiss nights at the Wag Club (which included the first ever UK Acid House party – an idea put forward by Colin Faver and Danny Rampling), both DJs on the station. Mac and ten of the DJs on the station including Norman Jay, Jonathan Moore, Colin Faver, Trevor Nelson, and Tim Westwood would become "shareholders" in a company called Goodfoot Promotions, with Mac heading up the station as its majority holder. By 1988, Kiss was at its strongest with a DJ line-up which had become the cream of London's clubland, and in that December, Mac and the other shareholders would announce that they would decide to close down in order to apply for a legal license. Listen to how Gordon Mac goes up the ladder and then leaves it all behind to come back eventually and create his next venture called Mi-Soul on Dab.

TRUE HOUSE STORIES W/ DAVID MORALES #027 - PART 1
With a real passion for music in his veins from a very young age,  from very humble beginnings, David Morales was destined to follow his dream and took the opportunity to play music at any given chance.
David's very first gig was playing at the Loft for Lulu 
His first regular Djing spot started at Ozone Layer where Lulu was the hostess. Still working a job in a restaurant, David was fortunate to meet Mike Brady from Paradise Garage and was invited to play at this incredible NYC club in 1983, where he invited legends such as Captain Black and Jocelyn Brown to the party.
With huge names currently on the lineup at Paradise Garage -no one yet knew of David.... But they soon would!!
In 1985, David started to work in music production -David Cole and Bruce Flowers being pivotal to David’s producing career.
Nicky Holloway and Pete Tong invited David to play at Estoria, only 40 minutes into his set, he was asked to stop playing just as he was getting into his set, for Jomanda to perform!!
David set up Defmix productions but with very little direction, experience and to just be landed in the midst of music industry, he had to learn the business very quickly in order to succeed.
Making multiple hit records, but never truly reaping the rewards for his hard work and commitment, David worked day in day out making 2-3 tracks every week.  David Morales was a true grafter and his passion was what kept him inspired to continue working relentlessly. Despite not earning what he deserved he continued to follow his dream.
Remixing is where David found his fortune in the industry. Frankie knuckles and David worked on so many remixes, in fact rewriting entire tracks and even changing the titles of the tracks, David simply received a flat fee and did not gain the recognition he deserved.
Mariah Carey “Dream Lover”, was his 1st superstar track remix. At first, he questioned the track due to it being extremely commercial (at the same time rejecting remix work for legends such as David Bowie) this remix became one of the songs David Morales is so famous for.
David also had the incredible opportunity to work with Todd Terry, a born musician, no need for any equipment - the SP1200 was the weapon!!
David is all for advances in technology and plugins etc. - his motto- simply work them to the absolute max.
Having worked on remixes for Michael and Janet Jackson, you would expect David to be living the high life - the truth is it involved signing non disclosures, bag checks etc. -  security was paramount,  not quite the fairytale you would have imagined.
Working alongside Aretha Franklin - one of David's biggest fears was -'how do you give constructive criticism to such an absolute legend'???? In the words of Aretha - Less is more and more is less. She absolutely embraced his opinion and gained her respect for his honesty.
Julio Iglesias was another star that David worked with. Giving his mother a dream come true, David arranged for Julio to call his mother to say ‘hi’ was just one of the many hi lights of working with such legendary musicians.
Donna Summer was David’s absolute no 1 idol and working with Jocelyn Brown was, yet another dream come true - to David, Jocelyn was an incredible legend he never imagined he would ever work with. Much to David's dismay he was arrested in Japan during his career. How was that for David?? At 57 years of age - truly mortifying, listen to David's very raw and open account of coping in a Japanese prison where no-one spoke his language and all of his basic rights were taken away.  An experience that will live with David forever but taught him about the importance of the simplicity of life - Health and Freedom. One of the memories David has about this true horror was when a prison officer recognized David and played his music - which really helped him get through this ordeal.

Lenny has played at iconic venues such as Ministry Of Sound - (London), ‘Studio 54’ - (New York City),  ‘Hacienda’ - (Manchester), ‘La Queen’ - (Paris) and he also DJ'ed for the closing party at  ‘The Chevron’ - (Melbourne).
