Born and raised in Indonesia, Omar Joesoef built this EP with samples of old records of ethnic music that he has found in an abandoned radio station on Java island. Named Lokananta, it is one of the first radios setting up in Indonesia in the 50’s. The recordings in Omar’s EP come from rituals and meditative chants of one of the last tribes still living in the ancient way, completely disconnected from the modern world.

Chants of Gorontalo opening track is named after a province of Indonesia located on the island of Sulawesi. Over there lives the Dayak tribe who still follows its ancient traditional way of life. They practice rituals to communicate with their ancestors using chants and meditation. This first track is about a prayer for harvests, fertility and prosperity. Dayak is a very intimate and enclosed tribe, keeping themselves away from modern society. These recordings of them singing found by Omar in Lokananta radio station are very rare and special. Lokananta is also the first record label of Indonesia, releasing recordings of wayang performances, speeches, Javanese orchestra. It is a great source of inspiration for Joesoef’s work.

Morning World track is a reading of a Java old story about a mythical creature called Gatot Kaca. Searching old records in his storage room, Omar accidentally found somewhat of a scripture in ancient Javanese. The meaning of it came from his family. The script was released by Kraton, an ancient Javanese royal palace, and was passed down on Omar's mother's side of the family. The story is a simplified folklore called Wayang, a traditional form of puppet theatre play from Java island. Omar found a Latin version of the script and asked his friend Sascha Alatas to read it in the way he used to hear it at Wayang plays when he was a kid. To complete the track, Omar made some minor manipulations of the voice and added a few samples of Lokananta records such as bird sounds and environmental soundscape. 

“It’s the Heat in the Room” track conveys a strong and powerful energy with consistent heavy bassline, snappy snare, groovy percussion ensemble and vocal samples of the Dayak tribe. The song emulates the adrenalin rush one might feel in the middle of a night hunt. Some of the sounds chosen reminds of the echoes that may be experienced in a dark cave when a single stone breaks on the floor.

Perhaps it was laziness, or simply a lack of interest, but generally they took what they saw at face value, unwilling to dig that little bit deeper to find out the real truth. That would be their downfall, they only cared about what was on the surface, when really there was so much more to learn and understand. If only they interrogated the veracity a little more, their knowledge would be so much richer. 

For their inaugural release, newly launched label Quartier Groove are harking back to 80s and 90s Spain, uncovering overlooked musical gems and breathing new life into them. In contrast to much of the contemporary digger and edit scene, label founders Richard Fribert and MOQST have worked hard to track down the original artists and fully license both cuts to ensure that they're properly spotlighting the artists and material.

Tired of seeing producers taking credit for digital edits of forgotten tracks, their hope with the project as a whole is to open up the discussion around mindfulness when releasing old and obscure music, including the use of sampling, fair remuneration for the original artists and a new approach from big record labels.

On the first instalment, 'Ritmo Del Barrio', they unearth a 1989 hip-house one-hit wonder which gets a dancefloor-focused flip from TYU, while on the B-Side label co-founder Richard Fribert offers his take on the experimental electronic rumba of Sombra y Luz, morphing it into a powerful hi-NRG club weapon.

Alexis Le-Tan and Tom Colebrook quite fluidly morph into our lazy initials: ALTC. Our current appreciation for an older psychedelic sound can be traced back to a dirty, careless and omnipotent period in the early 90’s when the sun, the Fridge Club or Space Tribe leggings brought our bodies together in time to these heroic sounds. Then it all sort of just wound down, more abruptly for some, and for a long time. But like old Smaug under the Lonely Mountain, we understood the longevity of gold. A few years just gone we embarked on a restlessly chaotic and passionate re-appraisal of our sonic past - just at a different speed. An ever growing archive and many edits later, we find ourselves still going; we are a happy and volatile little team, Mr. Le-Tan, who needs no introduction here, a Titan of this slow sound - arguably the original, whose honed booth selections are regularly adorned by loyal crowds all over Europe. Mr. Colebrook, a flash in the pan veteran of the Goa scene, now mainly chief archivist and an Internal wordsmith of ill repute.
There was a folder that existed in the archive called ‘The Socialists’ and over time as we pondered it, we began to understand the contents as taking on some sort of metaphor for a socialist arc of success and defeat, of growth and change, of hope and loss, of commitment and desertion, of lies and the truth, of battles and peace, emptiness and loss. Heroic themes indeed Comrades. As a musical selection, we wanted to imbue these metaphors with corresponding sonic inflections, sometimes we thought of sounds coming up through the ground to fight and be victorious or perhaps to lose, only to retreat and live another solitary day. Some were sounds for a moment of blissful morning sun soaked success, or the grey pulse of an imagined industrial trench. But above all - this selection of songs shows a commitment to each other and to the time and place they were made, and how they exist here - Now. We hope you enjoy the show!

The ship had been on its expedition for decades; its captain sailing it to new and undiscovered locations, capturing the hearts of new found friends and creating memories that would last forever. Many faces joined the voyage along the way, helping the captain steer the ship in new directions. There was no final destination in mind, there never had been — only the journey mattered.

Our own pal Bozza AKA Bawrut lends a hand in inaugurating London-based imprint Other Goodness with Divergent Emotions, a collection of three tracks that, like the title suggests, pull from different moods and feelings. Produced during lockdown, the tracks were made with home listening in mind rather than the club — well, almost all, there's still that no-nonsense Bawrut flair on the opener. The other two tracks bring different flavours: 'Sunshine' channels that post-rave feeling and 'AndreW', which is a special tribute to the Guv'nor himself, matches chugging rhythms with melancholic synth lines.
