Counterterraism Guest Mix 113: Celestino

Freeride Millenium label co-founder Jorkes quickly follows up his well received Wet Dream EP with a new five tracker including remixes from Younger Than Me and Curses.

Jorkes is the driving force behind the ever-excellent Freeride Millenium label, he hosts a residency at radio 80000 alongside ParisBöhm and has been busy producing and streaming over the last year, despite the pandemic. His recent ‘Wet Dreams’ release was a critical success, with BBC radio support, a raft of press coverage and a mass of DJ support, now he follows that up with this latest inventive and rugged EP of club sounds.

Opener 'All Your Juices' has snappy snares and a taught, tight groove that makes for a mechanical rhythm. It eventually grows looser with big synth sounds and vamping chords that layer in fluidly and a great sense of electronic funk. Remixers Younger Than Me are a Berlin based duo that represents a link between the old and the new. They have released on the likes of Tusk Wax and here flip the original into a dark and pulsing tune with hammering drums and edgy, trance influenced synths.

In original form, 'Dancer in the Dark' has a kinetic drum and hit combination that makes you immediately jerk your body. As the synth energy grows, celestial chords bring light and cosmic rays and take you off into the future. Dark disco don Curses then steps up with another brilliantly rugged and raw remix that layers sleazy synths into angular drums. Finally, the brilliant 'Afraid of Letting You Go' has an eerie and mysterious vibe with crashing hits and unsettling synths that make for a dystopian abandoned warehouse feel.

Once again here Jorkes has cooked up left of centre sounds that draw on synth, disco and techno in bold new ways. Artwork as always comes from the ever creative Daniel Rajcsanyi.

Following up to Rob Belleville’s inaugural delivery, Fluid Electronics returns in 2021 with a new collaborative EP courtesy of Dutch veteran Jarno, the man behind Trouw's infamous Below evenings, and Fluid Electronics’ co-founder and owner Shirazi, back in full swing after a ten-year break from production. The EP features remixes from Amsterdam’s Love Over Entropy and seminal Rotterdam-based duo, Duplex. 

The A-side finds Shirazi and Jarno dishing out a vaporous dub with the focus track, “Late Night Thoughts”. Engineering a mix of reverb-drenched atmospheric techno laced with hedonistic house accents and mystique-imbued melodies on a dreamy tip. Upping the tempo and overall vibe of the track, Love Over Entropy’s remix propels its listener in a blazing corridor of synth arpeggios and luminous chords.

The flip side sees Shirazi go solo on the ethereal “Continue Learning”, all in evocative spaciousness and textural finesse, as it merges the immersive depth of Basic Channel-esque envelopes with further straightforward floor dynamics. Clone-affiliated duo Duplex provides a tighter, jacking match to the original’s vaster headspace, tweaking it into a proper clinical club-ready weapon.

This World

Previously during the first national lockdown Third Son wrote, mixed and mastered his debut album in 20 days. Watch a short Stamp The Wax documentary on the work here. Following on from this remarkable achievement, Joseph has been going back to his early music collections that informed and inspired his work over many years, making his own re-imagined interpretations of them to form a new body of work called Retrograde.
Released in June, the covers span a broad church, from electronic, to rock, to minimal piano and ambient. The LP will be accompanied by a short run of tapes, the medium mostly used by the artist in formative years. The album was produced from his home studio in London.
“Over the last year I’ve been listening to key music from artists I’ve always gone back to over the years. The songs and pieces that still grab me after 100 listens. I slowly made my own interpretations, which kept me occupied during the drudgery of lockdown. We all need a project. I ended up with something for all settings, the sitting on the floor in the lounge listen, the kitchen disco listen and even an optimistic club listen.” Third Son Over his short but intensely packed musical history Third Son has been meticulously honing his craft and sound and has received accolades and spins from a huge cross section of the industry to include Maya Jane Coles, Michael Mayer, Anja Schneider, Jackmaster, Jasper James, Kolsch, Dark Sky, Terr, Lena Willikens, Moscoman, DJ Boring, Sasha and many more. As well as this he has seen praise from household publications such as DJ Mag, Mixmag, Beatport, Future Music among others. Following releases on Dusky's 17 Steps and Matthew Herbert's Accidental Jnr, 2021 is a bumper year with the artist releasing on Shall Not Fade, Unknown To the Unknown sub label Soft Computing, Disco Halal and Permanent Vacation. This plethora of names is testament to Joseph's ability to continually stay ahead of the curve and keep the listener guessing.

Third Son - Retrograde LP (Polymath)

Celebrating its first anniversary, cool British label Midnight People – curated by The Real Escobar (SXDNS212) – is set to release a killer eight-track VA compilation with all the profits going in aid of CALM charity. 

Italo, EBM, and Indie Dance, delivered by existing and forthcoming members of the label’s roster, including two fresh remixes of MP anthems: Remi Wanless’ "Red Mantis" and PADDY’s "She Doesn’t Know", made with love by Alex Aguayo (FREEDL038) and Emmet Read, respectively. Solid originals by Magari, Remi Wanless (yeah, again), Vitling, Parallel, Vanity Project, and Neowise complete the release.

Premiered here, Emmet Read’s remix of “She Doesn’t Know” is a more cosmic but slower interpretation in comparison to the original theme. The decrease in speed (from 125 to 120) did not reduce the huge amount of Italo Disco influences that PADDY generously administered in his December 2020 release. Fortunately!

Low Light

Informed by a highly influential early 1980s electronic music classic, the title track literally mind-sets the theme of Llewellyn’s latest release, kicking off with a euphoric vibe and drums shimmering with digital artifacts. At times almost dreamy cinematic pads, upfront with energetic Moroderesque propelling bass lines, are the sound signatures of Llewellyn’s journey through a warm and synthesizer laden EP, reviving the sound aesthetics of both the post-discoid VHS and today’s club era with a contemporary touch. Finishing off with a laid-back facet, this four-track EP contains enough warmth and drive to get you safely through the cold months, into a warm and promising future.

Llewellyn is one of Martin Enke’s producer’s monikers, who is closely associated with the Riotvan crew and also known as Lake People. Past releases can be found on labels like Riotvan, Uncanny Valley, Permanent Vacation, Mule Musiq, and others.
