In her opinion, her imagination was her greatest asset. Not that others were a party to that. No matter how mundane the task at hand, her mind could take her to places that reality could never dream of; it opened up new worlds and opportunities, it let her escape to other dimensions. It was the one thing she felt totally in control of, she was the master of her own fate, something that often felt out of reach in the real world.

Vief Records are using the power of music to raise money and awareness for great causes. The label launched in August last year with a split EP from Useful Council and Citizen which they coincided with an appeal to help support NHS nurses in their fight for fair pay. For their second outing, a sprawling 17-track compilation, they're fighting for another important cause: All proceeds from the release will be donated to Refugee Action, a charity that aims to build safe, happy and meaningful lives for refugees in the UK.

Not only is their mission an incredible one, so are the sounds that make up the record. Featuring music from Sentient, FAFF, Izzy Locke, Silverback and more, it touches on all corners of the club spectrum from breakbeat, jungle and UK bass to acid, electro and techno.

Following their contribution to the 2022 International Women’s Day compilation, and a co-production credit on “Dreaming is Essential” by Byron Yeates, Eoin DJ drops their first release on Radiant Records, Total Body. The 4-track EP is replete with mind-bending, lustrous tracks waiting to be spun out to sweatbox dancefloors.

“Total Body” invites movement from its first seconds. Layers and layers of snares, shakers and rhythmic synth stabs build tension before the pulse of a rolling bassline cements the elements into a cohesive hard house groove. Fragments and chops of sensx’s vocals wrap in and around the sonic field, leaving wisps of reverb and echo in their wake before repeating the track’s Total Body mantra in the breakdown. The result is a lushly-scored density of sound, with a relentless stomp that never feels overcrowded or too heavy. 

Angel D’lite’s remix takes a more skeletal approach to “Total Body”: a snare and clap march beneath chiming vocal stabs, rumbling low end and rolling breakbeats, flipping the original into a modern bass-heavy hybrid number. The rhythmic synth from the original, reversed and efex’d, ushers us in, and then out of the track, around extra bass stabs and pitch shifted “Total Body” chops. 

On the B side, “Ultra Soft” lifts off with a firm kick and a rolling 3-note bassline. Despite the title, the track hits harder than “Total Body” and sings with  Eoin DJ signatures: swirling funnels of processed vocals, rich, ear-itching textures, stripped back percussion and rave-ready samples are sprinkled with 303s, to create a track that sits comfortably with both classic trance and techno and contemporary “Progressive” dance music. 

The EP’s closer, a remix of “Ultra Soft” by Byron Yeates, compresses the astrally-inclined scale of the original track into shining slices of sound. A playful, chiming melody starts off the track alongside the kick, working through precise grooves, knife-sharp snares, a throbbing bass and chopped-up, smokey vocals. The result: 6 minutes of total embodiment from the Radiant Records boss.

The third release on Derek Russo’s own Broad Channel imprint “Special Occasion" EP arrives loaded with a wide palate of club swagger for any hour of the party. “Celestial Machine” is the A1 rough and rumbling trip, steered by a wiggly SH101 bass line and anchored by a thunderous sub bass and tenacious, rattling percussion. A floating pad briefly takes the edge off before lurching back. The sounds here are inspired and shaped by the aching cacophony of city life. “Yearning 4 Love” marries a Detroit inspired motif, with tasteful synth layering and bouncy, off-kilter drum programming. The result is an inquisitive banger, something different for the modern dance floor.

On the flip side, the title track ‘Special Occasion’ drops the tempo to a chugging rhythm that swings from a funky break tucked underneath. Deranged piano chords open up to a sinister synth line, jangling guitar and a thick 80s bass line. The final track “Planet Sunset” closes out this EP with a soaring, introspective synth floating on top of a rolling breakbeat groove, disco fed bass work and Juno stabs that resolves into a wave of oozy pad chords - a sure piece for the late night discerning dance floor.

The 43rd release of Urge To Dance delivers a pure dance-floor material, courtesy of Omer Bar & Gal Kinnel. Their Pitom EP offers warm, late-summer 'moogie' basslines, finely crafted and tight percussions, jumpy chords and somehow controlled and yet unrelenting energy.

The leading track, Pitom, is a slow-burning, deep and underground house exploration which compels with pulsating groove that moves the floor and minimalistic organic textures. 

Second in line is Od Lo, which carefully builds up and elevates the EP vibes. A real dancefloor weapon, the track blends driving kicks and percussions, similarly pulsating bassline and playful Brazilian vocal which perfectly locks into the track's groove.

Closing the pack on a high-energy note is First Touch - aptly named as the very first creation to emerge from Omer & Gal's debut studio session. Driven by a punchy, powerful kick, the track surges forward with rhythmic stabs and uplifting, almost euphoric synth leads, delivering a peak-time energy that will move you wherever you are !
