For Record Store Day 2014, Medical Records presents two exclusive releases celebrating the classic disco of 1980s Italy. The second release is a very special compilation of very rare and sought after A + B sides (plus 2 more hand-selected tracks) of 3 Italo Disco iconic 12” singles that were originally released on the legendary Fuzz Dance label (a sublabel of Materiali Sonori). This is volume 2 of Medical Records’ Electroconvulsive Therapy series which celebrates rare singles in the synth/wave/disco genre. The first single needs no introduction to lovers of disco. Trophy “Slow Flight” (vocal + instrumental versions) was released in 1982. A very hard-hitting percussive track with very interesting production that is quite gritty yet smooth with it’s vocoded vocals and synth melodies. The second single which is probably the most rare is Zed “Plastic Love” vocal + instrumental versions that were released in 1983. Sultry female vocals and pulsing electro sequences make these two versions absolutely essential. The original single is commonly bought and sold in triple digits so both A + B sides were included here. Clocking in at the third position on both sides are the vocal and instrumental versions of “Hesitation” by Mya & The Mirror which is a production by Alexander Robotnick (Maurizio Dami) with female vocals. Also included as bonus tracks at the end of side A and B are Mon Bijou’s “Just a Lover” and Naif Orchestra’s “Check Out Five”. Both are unstoppably catchy and were released on Fuzz Dance as well in 1984. For fans of classic and the synthy side of Italo Disco (i.e. Casco, Sun La Shan, Amin Peck, etc). Remasterd by Mino Cavallo with additional mastering and restoration by Martin Bowes at the Cage, UK. Presented on high-quality 180gram striped “Italian Flag” colored vinyl. Limited Edition.

Λένα Πλάτωνος (Lena Platonos) is a Greek musician, pianist and music composer. Her debut solo album, ‘Μάσκες Ηλίου’ (‘Sun Masks’) was produced in 1984 and reissued by Dark Entries in 2016. The album featured experiments with different sounds and a new batch of electronic equipment, such as the Roland TR 808 drum machine and Yamaha C60 synthesizer. Lena narrates each song in deadpan fashion, skillfully reciting her surreal Greek poetry. Her lyrics deal with the futility of love, the gap of human relationships, consumerist alienation in the bourgeois lifestyle of the 1980s.

We’ve recruited four of our favorite contemporary producers to remix their favorite tracks from ‘Sun Masks’. First up is “Lego” remixed by triple scorpio supernova Avalon Emerson, who is based in Berlin. Her remix morphs the track into a solid dancefloor twister. Next is “Lego” remixed by Lena Willikens, Cologne based DJ and resident at Salon Des Amateurs in Düsseldorf. She provides a deep and psychedelic journey through the darker shadows of the early night or morning. On the B-side is New Yorker and Firehouse Recordings boss Kim Ann Foxman remixing “Hoping By Shopping”. She transforms the spacey robotic vocoder track into a dynamic deep house workout, tough and dreamy all at once. Closing out the EP is a remix of “Wrong Love” by Berlin via Bucharest producer Borusiade aka Miruna Boruzescu. Enhancing the original melancholic piano ballad to a cosmic processional with poignant bass lines that build and recess like the ocean tides. 

All songs have been mastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The jacket is a reinterpretation of the original ‘Sun Masks’ cover, isolating the photograph of Lena wearing sunglasses designed by Eloise Leigh. Each copy includes a two-sided postcard with a manipulated film still from one of Lena’s music videos.

Veterok is the band from Moscow that named after the unique Soviet heater ("Light Breeze") which some locals used as a hair dryer in the old days. So the purpose of our musical collective is to warm the icy hearts and souls. Sometimes people really need it in spite of they do not realize this. 

At the gigs we do not only play musical instruments, sing and dance (for each show we prepare a special program) we also use hypnosis techniques developed by the secret KGB healers (please google Kashpirovsky and Chumak). Of course we all love the tune of the incredible sexiest polish girl Danuta. She made too much for us and for all world music.   

The band Veterok was formed by Petr Chinavat, Moscow musician, dj and coowner of the record store DiG:

"Snegovich is the word I heard from the Serbian guy when I was with my familly on the beach in Greece. He saw my son. The skin of my boy was fully covered by white sunblock. Actually Serbian guy wanted to say Russian word "Snegovik" (which means Snowman) but he forgot how to spell correctly. So it's the birth of the new word. For Russian ears it sounds quite funny.

Crustacean’s cover art was created by Venderstrooik’s own Nikki Rosa Ootjes. The album was mastered by Ruud Lekx.

Electronic Emergencies is an underground record label from Rotterdam, NL.  It was founded in 2014 by Spacemaker and Leather E, two DJs who have their roots in  electronic music.  

They both love electronic sounds and melancholy melodies and are not bound to  any style. The label’s aim is to release a wave of beautiful electronically generated music.

Iranian born Mozhgan has a love of dark and ghoulish sounds that always play out when she’s on the decks. In 2011, she started her own We Are Monsters party in San Francisco and it very much went against the grain, mostly thanks to her own definitive sets which draw on 80s synths and vintage hardware as well as exotic and ethnic rhythms, cold wave sounds and industrial textures. Since then she has established herself on the global circuit with sets at cult places like Burning Man and Panorama Bar.

She will join us at Dekmantel Festival later this summer and tastes us with what to expect with this new mix. It’s a rugged and low slung affair with jerking body music and frosted synths making for an alien vibe throughout. While often abstract and desolate, there are moments of sci-fi beauty and heady depths along the way that make this mix a cinematic experience from start to finish.

Studio wizard The Emperor Machine is back with more of his brilliantly inventive and colourful tracks as he joins the Skint family.

The UK artist, born Andy Meecham has long been dazzling dance floors with his synth heavy, tough edged and psyched-out disco beats. He has released solo as The Emperor Machine for labels like D.C. Recordings, Internasjonal and Southern Fried Records and has a long and revered history as part of Chicken Lips, and before that Bizarre Inc. He makes truly rugged club music with sci-fi influences and killer basslines that never fail to get the club in a sweat and he now brings all his prodigious talents to his new home at Skint.

This joining of musical forces seems to have been an inevitable outcome for imprint and artist, as label founder and creative director Damian Harris says "When they come to write the story of Skint Records & Andy Meecham – ‘Don’t Give up on Love’ - should be the title. ‘I always wanted to sign you’ I said. ‘I always wanted to be signed to Skint’ he said. 20 years on those dreams became reality. We met on a post by our mutual friend Erol Alkan. Facebook can’t be all bad if it facilitated this match made in dance floor heaven."

Here he serves up three versions of new single ‘Function.’ It is an epic ten-minute masterpiece with cosmic chords and corrugated basslines that jerk your body. Hip swinging claps and timeless disco percussion pump the groove while the expansive synths bring the heat.

The excellent Warehouse Mix is a real throwback jam with big piano chords hammering away and getting hands in the air as the off-kilter drums bounce below. It’s feel good, timeless music that is widely appealing and hugely effective.

Finally, the Version mix is a loose limbed boogie-funk bomb. The slippery lead synth takes you on a journey as the drums twist and turn and the whole thing exudes soul and colour that will light up any party. The EP also includes a series of DJ re-edit tools that focus variously on a dub, synth, percussion and warehouse version.

As ever, The Emperor Machine has cooked up the sort of dance floor magic he is so well loved for.
