Third Attempt

How to turn a moment of worry, uncertainty and isolation into something of a warm-hearted, creative catalyst? How to build bridges when humanity in its entirety seems caught in the nets of decisively painful crossroads? Written and recorded during the lockdown that's put our civilisations to sleep for the past year, the new album from Third Attempt comes as a much welcome balmy treat to our existentially dreadful times.

Dishing out good vibes in copious amounts, the aptly named 'Beats From The Quarantine' finds Third Attempt doing what he does best, i.e. pushing low-slung trip-hop joints and reframed disco blends on a loungey tip. An idyllic opener, 'Addicted' gets the ball rolling in soothing, dreamy fashion - grooving out to a plush, slap-heavy bounce that'll get your hips swaying and feet shuffling without further ado. Channeling polychromatic urban energies, the sample-heavy 'Front To The Back' then serves up a crisp mix of hip-hop drums, fluttering melodies and nu-age-friendly flights steering us closer to organic sound folds.

A heavily dubbed-out jazzy affair, 'Make It Double' stresses an intricate mixture of brass-laden jamming, wistful piano chords and smokey funk bass, all resounding across a dense haze of FX and subtle textural arrangements that grow deeper as bars pass by. Drifting towards more ethereally soulful heights, the brittle 'Missing Feeling' has us teleported to poetic jazz dreamlands in a snap of the finger. Fusing a solid bass with lush flocks of mischievous woodblocks and otherworldly chimes, the track floats in a zone of its own, just as eerily lavish as it is invitingly emotional.

Fuelled on laid-back trip-hop and vibraphonic kosmische, downtempo chugger 'Please Hold' quietly rides on to greener spiritual pastures, whilst 'Rain' reels out a more aqueous swing - mustering a breezy yet introspective package of sonar-like bloops, luxuriant disco shades and dusky Floridian atmospherics. Upping the tempo drastically, 'Images' keeps the feels pouring but tweaks the whole into a further hectic acid-drenched second half. Tapping into traditional Hindu motifs, 'Mirage' is a deeper-than-deep mystic trip, catching its listener in hypnotic webs of sitar-imbued harmonics.

Breathable to the fullest, 'Air' eases us in moody balearic jazz territories again through finely woven flights of languid trumpets and polychromatic pads, paying a nice tribute to the late José Padilla's evergreen melodic touch. One to curl up and drift off to, closing cut 'Cocoon' wraps us in warm layers of piano and synth-strewn accordance, fitting somewhere between the prismatic beauty of Aphex Twin's Drukqs-ian excursions and further sun-kissed Ibizean magic.

The Oslo based artist Third Attempt is building his fan base and his reputation for putting out high quality and extremely well produced beats. With two singles from this album already out of the gate the mothership has landed in shape of ‘Beats From The Quarantine’. This talented artist takes us on a trip-hop journey of eleven tracks of low slung beats and reframed disco blends. All designed with the forward thinking hip-hop head in mind.

Opener 'Addicted' gets the ball rolling in a soothing fashion with some slap-heavy bounce that'll get your hips swaying and feet shuffling. The sample-heavy 'Front To The Back' serves up a crisp mix of hip-hop drums, fluttering melodies and nu-age-friendly vibes. Continuing to seek the positive in the face of the mutable and inevitable, your favorite hippy goths, Hazy James & Millennium Culkin, are back with a double single/double remix EP "Out For You." It’s the new follow up to their thuddingly ethereal, transcendent psychedelic debut, Days Go By… which became a bit of a summer anthem last year due to heavy support from Lauren Laverne on BBC6 & the crew at 1BTN.

First up on the EP, title track, "Out For You" is an anthemic belter filled with ripping guitars, pounding arpeggiated bass, 808 drops, plus a dreamy break filled with slide guitars that rumble, build and explode underneath Hazy James' airy falsetto. Designed for arena madness and soundtracking your moments of catharsis. 

Not satisfied with just arena filling vibes, Each Other (Justin Strauss and Max Pask) take the original and twist it into a different experience which should really only be beamed down from a DJ booth orbiting the Earth to a fully global dance party. File this in the "Peak Time Festival" folder.

Flipping over to the b-side, the energy is high but the feeling a little colder on "The Night" - a chugging, introspective, escapist anthem for anytime the sun goes down. Sonically it's a little goth-punk and a little bit acid house. (Alt: Sonically it’s got a little goth-punk flavor with some acid-house taste) This is the first song on the playlist for your journey to a destination not yet known, just any-fucking-where but here. 

NY icon, Juan MacLean picks up remixing duties and turns in a taut, lean, dark, body moving machine. Shimmering synth lines cascade over a rough hypnotic beat, conjuring memories of Maceo Plex hammering to a packed, smokey floor at Trade.

After the success of the first, there always had to be a second Buena Onda compilation. Before that arrives later this year comes a second delicious sampler featuring a remix from Calm, some 303 Balearic action from Iceland, Italian house newcomer Relative and a fresh Gallo rework. 
Buena Onda is of course the cult Berlin-based party that constantly redefines Balearic music. It is run by Hell Yeah label boss Marco with resident DJ and co-founder Gallo and is a party that is both eclectic and euphoric, whether serving up slow acid or dreamy downtempo. 
This sampler opens up with Buena Onda favourite Calm and his epic Mellow Mellow Acid remix of Gallo's 'Abysso,' which is long-legged, fulsome and laced with life-affirming piano chords. Then comes Icelandic artist Tonarunur who used to record as B.G. Baarregaard and has landed on the likes of Eskimo Recordings and Citizens of Vice. He layers deep acid lines into a smooth house groove that is sprinkled with cosmic dust. Italian house newcomer Relative then brings tumbling percussion, smeared chords and plenty of drama Italo vibes to his tune 'The Healing Place' and Gallo's Tropical Hinterhof Remix of Kayroy's 'Imagine' is five minutes of post-rave comedown bliss with gorgeous ambient design and celestial chord work that soothes the soul. 
This is another perfect snapshot of the mature musical thrills you get at Buena Onda.

Oslo's Torje Fagertun Spilde – better known as Third Attempt – is quickly making a name for himself as one of the most reliably exciting producers to emerge from Norway's rich meta-disco lineage. His last single, 'Age Of Steam', arrived bursting with bass-heavy funk flex, and we're thrilled to report that his newest effort is no less kinetically charged. As the name suggests, 'Nu Funk' is a contemporary exploration of deeply-rooted funk sensibilities. Combining warm bass with tightly constructed beats, Third Attempt dexterously merges far-reaching musical aesthetics that include trip hop, funk, soul and disco to deliver a sound that – although endowed with vintage sensibilities – feels proudly up to date.

The track begins with snappy hip hop vocal samples scratched over tight beats and a delectable bass guitar hook. The groove pauses for dubbed-out space delays to echo into the night before a singing lead guitar joins the rhythm elements to burst back into life. Forging a heads-down furrow from which there's no escape, the seductive beats maintain the course as vocal chops, flute motifs, elegant strings, and otherworldly sweeps elegantly meander across the panorama.

Just as we've come to expect from Third Attempt, this is warm, organic and utterly alluring work. Taken from a forthcoming album that's set to land in the coming months, we are beyond excited to hear what the young talent will come up with next.

Third Attempt is back on Beatservice Records with yet more delightful audio honey, this time arriving with the gloriously soothing groove of 'Sunbeam Symphony'.
23-year-old producer Third Attempt has been in sparkling form of late. With a pair of exquisite singles having recently arrived in quick succession, his latest creation is again plucked from his hotly anticipated long-player slated to arrive in the coming months. While his previous outings have been blessed with heavy doses of floor-focused funk, 'Sunbeam Symphony' finds him in a delightfully laid-back mood with a track destined to provide the soundtrack for blissed-out sun-downs, poolside abandon, and at-home meditations.
Set over a groove that arrives like a cool summer breeze, the track evolves over soul-soothing chords, weighted bass and slick, rolling beats. Hypnotic e-piano guides us into position as the drums build the energy, the bass notes power us forward as Third Attempt's dextrous keyboard solo dazzles momentarily before subsiding for a dub-infused break. Spaced-out vocal chops and rising sweeps build tension before the sprightly drum fill sparks a return to the groove. It's been a long time since i made a house-ish track. This one has a mystical vibe to it. Starts off chill, but ends up kinda energetic. Includes various field recordings and samples from indian folk music. Also a snippet from a really old interview with Tiny Tim. My new Korg Volca Keys contributed a lot as well. Gotta love those analog sounds!

Juno Review: Groove king Medina is fighting fit and back with an absolute odyssey. "Heart Of Kyushu" is an all-out trip of tranquillity. Weighing in at 13+ minutes, it's for the deepest and most tender of moments and real statement on where Cole is at right now. "Target Woman" follows suit with a little more cosmic welly. Shiny sultry vocals, mystic synth whirlwinds and more immersivity than a VR village, Cole's not messing around with these.

Since debuting on the label in May 2017, East London duo Earthboogie has been part of the extended Leng family. In that time, Izak Gray and Nicola Robinson have delivered a swathe of superb singles and a fine debut album, 2018’s critically acclaimed Human Call. Here they present their sole single of 2019, a two-track fusion of intergalactic, terrestrial and tribal elements reflective of their by-now trademark style.

Fittingly, lead cut “Creepy Steve” – a previously unheard workout recorded during the sessions for Human Call – contains many of the musical ingredients that made Earthboogie such an enticing proposition. It boasts a raw, fuzzy and driving analogue bassline, densely layered tribal percussion, dub disco-influenced guitars, woozy electronics and sporadic blasts of African style chanting. As if that wasn’t enough to get the blood pumping, Gray and Robinson have also thrown in some extended, rock style guitar solos and more cowbells, bongos and timbales than you can shake a stick at

It comes accompanied by a previously unheard remix of “Human Call”, the title track from their superb debut album, by friend and fellow musical fusionist Joel Harrison. His version is warm, woozy, driving and percussive, brilliantly re-imagining Earthboogie’s original version as a supersonic slab of peak-time ready deep house. The band’s original chanted vocals, guitars and melodies slowly rise above bustling, all-action drums, weighty bass, alien-sounding electronic flourishes, poignant trumpet parts and seriously dreamy sustained chords.

Third Attempt is Torje Fagertun Spilde, a 22 years old artist and DJ originally from Asker, just outside of Oslo. Now established in Tromsø, Norway, he is one of the young forces in the rising new generation of electronic producers from the birthplace of the Northern Disco Groove.
Third Attempt has a distinct and uplifting flavour, firmly planted in the smoother areas of deep house. His influences range from jazz to ambient, trip hop to classic house. Third Attempt's first Beatservice single "Shoreline" accumulated numerous accolades and tens of thousands of plays on various streaming platforms. After three two-track EP's, and one four track EP, it is now time for a new album from Third Attempt! 
The album continues his mixture of funky, jazzy and deephouse grooves, but, while his EP's have been aimed mostly for the dancefloor, the album is on the smoother end of the scale.
