RRAYEN
RRayen is the solo project of Maia Koenig  (Argentina 1987), in which, using homemade and recycled instruments, she programs with a nintendo Gamboy DMG from 1989 using the LSDJ tracker and creates primitive sounds, mostly of square waves and white noise that are transformed into a sea of unconventional sounds.

INTERSPECIFICS is a Multispecies Collective from Ciudad de México, Mexico.
DIY Hardware and Software, Mutant Synths and bioprocess.. is conformed by Leslie Garcia + Paloma López.
According to their bio: Multispecies nomad collective and independent artistic research bureau founded in Mexico City in 2013. Our current lines of research are focused on the use of sound and Artificial Intelligence to understand the bioelectrical and chemical signals of different living organisms and its geometrical patterns as a nonhuman form of communication. For this purpose we’ve developed a collection of experimental research and educational tools we call Ontological Machines. Our work is deeply shaped by the Latin American context where precarity enables new forms of creativity and ancient technologies meet cutting edge forms of production. We think about this as a methodology for creation, where one is always looking for the most suitable way to produce in terms of social inclusion, cross-disciplinary practices and open knowledge.

For this playlist I selected the tracks Displacement and Journey. Journey belongs to the EP 80X. They say that 80X is inspired in a microscopio journey to the bacteria Paenibacillus sp. Through the use of timelapses obtained with our biotracker x/y and the displacement mapping technique, we managed to capture the mobility and dynamic of the bacteria. And with that data we build the musical piece with the technique known as data assisted composition.

She developed a big part of her career by photographing and documenting the experimental musical scene in Guadalajara, that started in the end of the 2000 decade and beginnings of the 2010s. In her work stands out the bonds that she has established with different collectives, avant-garde artists and sound artists from Mexico and the world. She has extended her creative practice from visual media to sound design. She has a constant activity in the noise circuit, improvisation and audiovisual collaboration.

Personal Territories is a disc that she started recording in 2018, published in 2019 by Static Recods. In the album, the aim was to create a double narrative through the music and from a fiction or science fiction story. It is a journey of invading other planet and at the same time she wanted to create a story that talked about violence in general, the systematic violence that we live in mexico. Huerta says that she focuses in gender violence against mexican women. She uses the sound as an invasive way to impact in the body of the other

Salem is an occurrence of allusions, devotion and result

“…On May 30th, 2014 Sutekh Hexen performed with several other bands at the Wisp House, a former nunnery located in Salem, Oregon. It was early the next morning; sleep had settled over the neighborhood. The party was winding down and the house had become quiet except for a few people having conversations here and there. I was preparing my Thermarest and thinking how nice my sleeping bag was going to be when I heard sounds starting to emerge from the basement again. I looked at my “bed” and started rummaging through my pack for my recorder. I put some fresh batteries in and looked at my phone, “I should be sleeping” I thought to myself as I sat down on the stairs and pushed record. One by one each of the guys came downstairs…”  M.G./GreySun 

Salem is a live, impromptu field recording by GreySun Records which provides a rare window into the improvisational and un-scripted creative realms of Sutekh Hexen. Finding the collective at their most forthright and primitive to date, Sutekh Hexen conjures something entirely original within their own construct. Upon completion came reflection and context, which yielded a challenging and equally commanding release in six movements. 

Housed in a heavy tip-on gatefold jacket and individually hand numbered, Salem is available in a standard edition of 250 black vinyl and a deluxe version of 50 “smoke-swirl” vinyl. Digital download code included.

Hexad Prints: Inspired by each audio track of Salem, artist Grady Gordon has created 6 original corresponding monotypes which have been hand letter-pressed in conjunction with Small Fires Press/St. Roch Av. 11.5" x 11.5" black ink. 140lb cover stock. 

Multi-dimensional talisman: 5-sided pyramid which collapses downward to reveal the Sutekh Hexen sigil and album moniker. 1/4" etched black plexiglass. Created/designed by St. Roch Av. & Kevin Gan Yuen in conjunction with IDIYA.

Multivocal is a polyphonic maze that unfolds to both the body and the mind. A generative take on rhythm and spacial perception, it presents the same events in different configurations. 

The two pieces of the album, "Solid of Revolution" and "Never Odd or Even", mirror each other with the same principle in different musical scales: steady pulses with one millisecond difference in tempo start beating together, then slowly phase organically and progress into ever-changing rhythmic patterns until they finally return to unison. 

Multivocal emphasizes shifts of attention in the listener’s experience and plays with the expectations that frame it. Originally conceived for quadraphonic sound, the pieces reveal the many different aspects and modes of perception that can arise within the same sequence of notes. In this way Multivocal is influenced by concepts of gestalt psychology such as multistable perception - a term describing ambiguous patterns that offer multiple interpretations at once. The minimalism and repetitive quality of the music also refers to trance-inducing and collective music practices, driven by the strong bodily affects induced through the use of rhythms.

Those two compositions were recorded live during Ars Electronica 2018 at the occasion of the sleeping event « Sonatas for Sleep/less », curated by multimedia artist Shu Lea Cheang and cultural theorist Matthew Fuller.

Tape loops are a closed path, a cyclic river, a ring around a far planet. They’re similar to our memory, continuously reenacting an artefact that belongs to a precise point in time, brought back in a process of recall where that artifact slightly and slowly becomes imprecise and shifted. An unrested repetition carved into an old pavement, in a city where every generation leaves a new mark, a new incision and maintains an endless process of birth and deterioration. Sonus Ruinae’s synthesizers sounds are gently laid on that closed path, put in a locked repetition and engaged into that eternal dance.
While growing up with computer music influences, ranging from glitch to the new century Roman electronic scene, Marta De Pascalis developed her musician skills under the spell of the Italian sound labs sphere, from Gruppo di Improvvisazione to Battiato and other masters that influenced the global movement of sound designers. Her earliest Live performances already showed a special character of improvisation and structure, reduced slowly to become essence, made of synthesis and magnetic tape. Her album Sonus Ruinae is a canvas of harmonics and a sublime place where things are whole, where your first listen is engraved just like that ancient city’s pavement, and Marta endlessly writes beauty on top of it, layer after layer.
