Pinkshinyultrablast, are a five-piece band from Saint-Petersburg in Russia. The first single ‘Umi’ is due for release on November 10th. The song is indicative of an album full of melodic gems. Umi is rich with complexity, while underpinned with a beauty that both beguiles and entrances. The song evokes the spirit of bands like Slowdive and The Cocteau Twins, but at the same time remaining undeniably modern.

Hailing from a city more synonymous with the State Conservatory rather than a gang of shoegaze addicts, they’ve been compared to Lush. But this is no mere throwback tribute - due to their sharp, icy electronics and ability to subvert the genre, bringing something new to the table. They possess not only the spirit of late 80s/early 90s British bands like Ride, but also machine-made sounds of the same era from Sabres Of Paradise or Global Communication, not to mention wider vibrations like Cluster, Popul Vuh, Terry Riley and Philip Glass.

Disdain for a stagnant scene can often be a driving force of creativity; the band say of St Petersburg that, “we realised the local indie scene was totally boring and wanted to play something radically different”. That vision has been realised – this is a sound brimming with playful melody and finely-crafted songwriting. Imagine the scope of a Caribou record, fronted by Elizabeth Fraser soundtracking a grizzly Raskolnikov crime.

The band take their name from an Astrobrite album, an act who were, according to the band, instrumental in how they “researched spaces between ambient, heavy guitar and pop music” .The spaces are what stand out, the production creates a dream-like affair, while space to breathe and reflect on the beauty of the music is accommodated. There exists a sparseness to their sound, that, in turn gives spaciousness, even expansiveness.

Evans the Death return with their second album "Expect Delays" in March via Fortuna POP! (Europe) and Slumberland Records (USA). Recorded again with producer Rory Atwell, the album bristles with an underlying tension and veers from rip-roaring noise to quiet contemplation, underpinned by Katherine Whitaker’s extraordinary voice.

Still barely out of their teens, there’s a tremendous sense across "Expect Delays" of a band coming into their own, honing a plethora of influences to make a sound that is uniquely them. Each song on the album has a different feel to it: some of them are melodic and pretty; some of them heavy and dissonant; and some of them are, to quote guitarist Dan Moss, “a bit strange”. While retaining the post-punk and 90s alt-rock inspired elements that peppered their debut, the music is more expressive, heavier and more experimental, and the lyrics more nuanced, the sense of despair leavened by sharp wordplay and humour.

The unsettling undercurrent of melancholy and hopelessness that pervades the record has its roots in the last three years, spent eking out an existence on the poverty line in Cameron’s Britain, leaving them with a succession of minimum-wage jobs and unemployment benefits interviews. As guitarist Dan Moss relates, the album is about “being in London and feeling hopeless and a bit lost. Not having any money, relationships falling apart, things just not connecting or going anywhere and getting absolutely wasted all the time.”

Named after the undertaker in Dylan Thomas's 'Under Milk Wood,' the band’s 2012 self-titled inaugural album saw critical acclaim from the likes of Q, Uncut and Artrocker, as well as radio play on BBC Radio 1, BBC 6Music and XFM. After a change in line-up following the release of their debut, the band regrouped around the core of brothers Dan and Olly Moss and singer Katherine Whitaker for the recording of "Expect Delays." Drummer James Burkitt was recruited from Leeds’ band The ABC Club to complete a taut new four-piece.

More ambitious and focused than their previous record, whilst sacrificing none of their spontaneity and vitality, "Expect Delays" is a supremely inventive and intelligently crafted album from a band who have suffered for their art, and used that experience to inform and nourish their work. Expect no more delays, Evans the Death have arrived.

Formed in 2012 and having supported the likes of Nothing, Ringo Deathstarr, Paws and The Telescopes, The Cherry Wave are a noise-laden, fuzz-obsessed four-piece from Glasgow, Scotland. Taking equal inspiration from Shoegaze, Noise and Hardcore Punk, their approach has been to make music which is aggressive and urgent while also washed out, blurry and hazy. The guitars are like an explosion in a fuzz pedal factory and the vocals sound like they were recorded inside a black hole. This has resulted in them creating a very unique and individual sound.

It is the cathartic soundtrack that maps the human experience through their eyes, as the quintet transitions from old jobs to new jobs, old friendships to new friendships, and old loves to new ones. Eighteen years after they called it quits as a working band, 2013 finds the original members of Medicine reunited and proudly offering a newly recorded LP on Captured Tracks. “To The Happy Few” is the sound of a highly inspired group reclaiming its creative legacy, thoroughly immersed in the practice of mixing harsh noise with obsessive melodic detail and heavily groovy rocking. Returning is the core trio of lead singer/ chanteuse Beth Thompson, guitarist / vocalist Brad Laner, and drummer Jim Goodall, the same team which created the still vital, influential and controversial LPs “Shot Forth Self Living” (1992) , “The Buried Life” (1993) and “Her Highness” (1995) as well as a stand-out appearance in the 1994 film “The Crow”.


As it happens, it’s really all the fault of Captured Tracks. In 2012 C/T pulled off the seemingly impossible and secured the rights to reissue the aforementioned two original Medicine LPs in loving and expanded fashion. This was a rather emotional moment for the original band members. So much so that upon meeting up at Brad’s home studio in May 2012 for the first time since 1995 in order to divide up the vinyl goodies and ultra-limited box sets, the trio laid down the basic track for what became the final song on the new LP. Emboldened by the natural ease with which they slipped back into Medicine mode, the trio spent the remainder of the year leisurely recording the new LP and enjoying each other’s company far removed from the stress and turmoil of their original early 90′s run. The resulting LP is not your parent’s Shoegaze record. The sonic palette and the hands, feet and mouths that utilize it may be the same, but the end result more subtly reflects the amassed life experiences and refined aesthetics of three mature artists only just now approaching the peak of their powers.
