We played two records each all night, Andrew first then me, until the last half an hour of part two where it's one each. I travelled by train with a kidney infection and without a passport for 13 hours each-way to make this one and I'm glad I did. It was a fantastic night, so thanks to Andrew, Diego, Lele and everyone who was there dancing like a mad thing.

When Andrew Weatherall meets Ivan Smagghe

February 17 will mark the fifth anniversary of Andrew Weatherall’s tragic death. Three days before that, Material Music will release A Love from Outer Space, a compilation compiled and mixed by  Sean Johnston, who DJed and ran the A Love from Outer Space club night with Weatherall. It features 19 songs that capture the essence of the club night, many of them exclusive. I spoke to Sean about the new album, about London 88 Acid House madness, 122 BPM limits, all-time ALFOS anthems and DJing at ALFOS days after Weatherall’s passing. I hope you enjoy it. Andrew Weatherall (1963-2020) was a highly influential British DJ, producer, and remixer, renowned for his eclectic taste and innovative approach to music. Emerging from the vibrant London music scene in the late 1980s, Weatherall became a pivotal figure in the development of the acid house and electronic music genres. He gained widespread recognition for his remix of the track "Loaded" by Primal Scream, which helped define the sound of the early '90s and contributed to the rise of the Madchester scene.

Weatherall's work was characterized by a unique blend of genres, seamlessly fusing elements of house, techno, rock, and post-punk. His productions often featured a raw, gritty aesthetic, reflecting his deep understanding of both the dancefloor and the underground music culture. As a DJ, he was known for his captivating sets that traversed a wide range of styles, captivating audiences with his ability to create a hypnotic atmosphere.

Beyond his work as a DJ and producer, Weatherall was also a respected label owner and a key figure in the independent music scene. His label, Rotters Golf Club, showcased a diverse array of artists and sounds, further cementing his legacy as a champion of innovative music.

Weatherall's impact on the music world is profound, and his contributions continue to resonate with artists and fans alike. His passing in 2020 was a significant loss to the music community, but his spirit and influence live on through his extensive body of work and the countless artists he inspired. 

As we publish this mix, it serves as a tribute to his enduring legacy and the inerasable mark he left on the world of music. Rest in peace!
