Liquiform Showcase Series Drop 50: Danox

After a short hiatus, our Showcase Series returns with Bristol based, Neuro focused DJ & Producer - Mutagen.

It was only a dozen years into his journey on our sphere before Rhys uncovered the glowing canvas of Drum & Bass. Although kick-starting his underground palette with Jungle, Rhys eventually found his way to the darker side of DnB through hearing the work of Ed Rush & Optical, Noisia and Scottish duo - Konflict. 

“Not the first but Noisia - Diplodocus was probably the most influential track of my life.”

Holding residencies for Toxictek and K-tek Soundsytems, calling upon his alias Mutagen - the dBs Bristol student has sets at Bristek and Money Madness under the belt too. 

A combination of Hip-Hop, Heavy Metal, Tekno & Hardcore is responsible for creating a unique synthesis of influences which Rhys cleverly exploits in his own music. The output of Eatbrain, Blackout and Virus Recordings also play a big role in the techniques Rhys incorporates. Obscure sound design and clean mixdowns are the main focus when it comes to Production coupled with heavy and experimental styles.

With tracks forthcoming on cardinal labels - Korsakov, Beast Music and two others which are under wraps for now, it’s no doubt Mutagen is a name you can expect to hear a lot about this year.

We embark on the second phase of supporting our fellow sisters, following on from https://soundcloud.com/madambrokethechain's Vocal Emblazon.

Igniting the Strictly Sisters series, with the sole purpose of laying new foundations for female artists to share their material. Each week, a new lady will step up to shell down an exclusive mix, fusing an alliance of nimble-fingered sisters coupled with an easily accessible library of their beats.

We couldn't think of any better way to start than with Scottish Queen of the dance @mrsmagoo who has supported this project since the planning stages and recommended many artists, most of which you will hear featuring in the coming weeks!

It kicked off back way back when she was just 8 years old, borrowing tape packs from her dad, the sounds of Helter Skelter, Accelerated Culture and Sidewinder all playing just a part of the musical influences she absorbed growing up, which when coupled with the punk and rock her mum loved 
gave her a solid foundation from which to draw her sound.

Come 17 years old, she was hitting her first rave – Rebirth, and soon after that was getting her hands on a pair of 1210’s, back then though… her sound of choice was Happy Hardcore. After a weekly internet radio show led to some bookings, Mrs Magoo found herself increasingly drawn to the sounds of Jungle and DnB and by 2013 she was a certified junglist. That year saw her playing her first headline set at Jungle Nation in Aberdeen, one of Scotland’s longest running jungle nights.

With two nominations and one award for best female DJ at the We Love Jungle Awards, a regular radio show with Kenny Ken on both Origin and Rough Tempo, monthly shows with Bellyman, dates lined up across the US and a tonne of B2B sets with pioneers such as Nicky Blackmarket and Garry K, things are working out well for Mrs Magoo.

Her unmistakable sets, built on a foundation of smooth rolling DnB and crashing amens are liberally sprinkled with ragga and Jump-up and when combined with her impeccable style, both on and off the decks and her infectious energy it’s easy to see how she’s making a mark.

"I'm a 29 year old DnB DJ from Edinburgh under the alias Trotters. I've been messing around with sound production since I was 16/17. before learning how to mix vinyl when I was 18."

"It was a DJ Hype mix that I heard when I was 16 that first got me into DnB. From there I started listening to more deeper DnB(which i prefer). I played with Heads Up crew at a few venues in Edinburgh for a while until we decided to go our separate way. I was also lucky enough to play an event in Prague called 'That Beat.' My plan for the future is to throw mixes out and secure some bookings!"

"Jump up/dark d'n'b/jungle DJ from the highlands of Scotland, I've had the pleasure of playing many various exciting places over the years and I'm constantly looking forward to the next thing. Found in a bothy in the middle of nowhere shaking the rafters with all sorts of jump up naughtiness and the rest is history! Made my club debut in Studio 24 last year, and have gone from strength to strength, winning Metragnome's mix competition, playing a collection of festivals from AudioSoup, Elements, Solfest and Shenanigans and a myriad of outdoors gigs and club nights including Cenote Sounds, Kronik, Too Fast Too Honkin, AberBoomTique, Open Your Mind and Mains Tek Castle Party. I've shared line ups with crazy talented people such as Mandidextrous, Rumble in the Jungle, Kaotik Kartel, Slamboree, Phibes, WBBL, Cenote Sounds, Jamin Nimjah, Lowgrade, Ziggy Gee, Mrs Magoo, Mr Traumatik, Metragnome, Oh My Josh, DemMan Productions, Honkin HiFi, Sir Skanksalot and many many more. I am DJ Diamond G hailing from Dundee. One of the resident dj’s with Tunage and also one of the current promoters for Urban Flava.  I like my friends in the Tunage and Urban Flava Crew am an old school raver at heart who lived through what we consider to be the golden era of rave culture. We continue to campaign the sounds we cherish and do so in the way we always knew. With technics 1210’s and a box of records. My main influence in dj’ing was DJ Ricochet(RIP Chris)who was unique in his approach to mixing and set building.
