Back in the nineties, Human Beings were pioneers in the Dutch techno scene. And The Matrix may well be their finest moment. SoHaSo gives this stone-cold classic the re-release it deserves, together with a magical Plaid-remix and a forgotten track, straight from DAT.

Together with Quazar and Fierce Ruling Diva, Utrecht-based duo Human Beings were among the very first brave enough to go live, back in 1992. Dance music was still called house or techno. Other flavors only came later.

Both Allert Aalders and Bert van der Grift were proper nerds. Their studio was filled to the brims with vintage synthesizers and drum computers and all machines were constantly challenged. Van der Grift sadly passed away in 2005 after a sudden cerebral haemorrhage, marking the abrupt end of Human Beings.

The Matrix ticks all the boxes of a proper Human Beings-tune: crystal clear melodies sweeping from corner to corner, ultra-clever drum programming and a main theme that knocks your socks right off. In the energetic live version, they have shaped the track to perfection. A secret weapon that works wonders on dancefloors, even 30 years later.

London duo Plaid strip The Matrix to its bare essentials, focusing on the main melody while giving the kick a bit more oomph in a Plaid kinda way.	

Ghost in the Shell is exactly that. A forgotten off-beat track, made during one of those many sessions in Bert's crampy studio. Its murky downtempo rhythms take a nod to both Meat Beat Manifesto and Renegade Sound Wave.

Light Echoes is the result of a long time collaboration between childhood friends nICo and Grand Riviera. The project was born back in 2019, when the duo met for a jamming session at Grand Riviera’s studio and began to experiment with synths and rhythms.
A few sessions later, the structure of Disco Paradiso was completed, becoming the song of the LP that they feel the most connected to because it marked the beginning of this collaboration.
Their mutual love towards spacey electronica was always the focus, while maintaining a dancefloor touch was an important part of their process. Heat-Haze Controller, Stalled Memory, Heavy Cycle and Cosmic Orchestra followed after Disco Paradiso to create a
five-track exploration of sonic sensations, bold bass lines, distorted industrial pads, rarefied synths and acid sounds, creating an ethereal atmosphere. It took a few years to take this work to completion, which was entirely produced in the same way it started: in Grand Riviera’s
studio, featuring sounds from a bunch of analog synthesisers and FX such as Roland SH201, Crumar Cougar (an organ from 1969!), Korg Minilogue, Model D and Pro1, Roland JU-60A, Nord Drums and Roland Space Echo, plus some beloved VSTs like Roland 303 and various samples.
Master Romain FX completes the LP by offering a stompy interpretation of Stalled Memory, giving it a little Italo touch with an acid character and a rolling bass line to provide ecstatic dance floor moments.

The imprint has been establishing a solid ground for the new Frankfurt sound since 2009. By featuring internationally acclaimed artists LARJ has been providing DJs and audiences with essential tunes in an extensive range of high-quality house music. Laid-back dance-floor awareness with a sense for particularity in sound is what might describe best most of the releases and artists.
