This album will take you to a secluded beach on a wild, tropical island. The sheltered waters on the lee side of the island are exceptionally calm; the sea is like glass, mirroring the tropical sky. Gentle waves roll ashore, and as they recede, coral fragments tinkle delicately in the backwash.

Among the coral debris, hermit crabs scurry busily, carrying their crazy variety of shelly homes. From the rainforest behind come the occasional calls of lorikeets, mynahs and fruit pigeons.

This is a tranquil recording from a remote and idyllic location.

Recorded in the Gamba Reserve, near the former village of Sounga, in Gabon, Central Africa. Recorded for a zoo exhibit with PZM mics spaced 35' apart (to match playback spacing) onto a Tascam DAP1 DAT recorder.

Life abounds in the exotic and beautiful rainforests of Sulawesi - one of the largest islands in the Indonesian archipeligo. Here time has stood still, revealing the evolution of nature through a unique diversity of birds and animals.

In humid lowlands we hear fruit pigeons, orioles, monarch flycatchers and a magnificent pair of hornills. Further inland, hill forests reach deep into the remote heart of the island. The booming calls of imperial pigeons carry across the valleys, squirrels call from high in the canopy and the eerie voices of piping crows echo through the forests.

We climb high into the mountains, the realm of the cloud forests. Flocks of birds move through the forest calling in the morning sunshine. Finally, night falls on a land where mystery and the unusual are everywhere - Sulawesi.

'Sulawesi - Heart of the Indonesian Rainforest'- album sample

The song of the Golden Whistlers of the Solomon Islands is one of nature's marvels.

This recording takes you to the island of Kolombangara to experience their melodic, rhythmic (and very loud!) voices reverberating through the rainforests that cloak the island's volcanic flanks.

We begin predawn, with a hypnotic chorus of frogs and insects in the tropical night. Suddenly a Whistler breaks the calm with an exuberant ripple of sound that sends a shiver up the spine. From then on there's no stopping him, as he pours out a sequence of percussive melodies at high volume.

As the day moves on, the whistlers ease back, and a variety of birdsong filters down from the forest canopy - Lorikeets, Mynahs, Flycatchers, Hornbills, White-eyes, Pigeons, Cockatoos - along with the gentle buzz of diurnal insects.

With the afternoon, we hear one of the other unusual voices of these forests; the harsh growls and booming calls of the Buff-headed Coucal. A Whistler gives some last calls as the light begins to fade and the electric vibration of dusk cicadas fills the air. After dark, the forest is filled with frogs once again, this time a multitude of chiming 'Koni' frogs.

Kubah's forests are pulsing with life, and the soundscapes that can be heard in this national Park are among the most incredible I have ever experienced. This recording features the incredibly powerful sounds of Empress cicadas, along with the melodic song of the White-rumped Shama, and the rhythmic ' te-hoop 'calls of Golden-whiskered Barbets.
