I have long been interested in sleep, the unconscious and the subconscious when it comes to audio, listening and music.  With the birth of my first daughter I became particularly interested in sleep and how to get more of it (I’m sure most parents go through this).  I composed several pieces of simple drone music as an aid to our family to try to help us relax and sleep.  I have no idea if it really worked.  Jimmy’s piece and write up led me back to some of these thoughts about sleep and particularly what role audio plays during sleep, getting us to sleep, meditation, relaxation, dreaming, etc.

Jimmy makes some comments in his write up about sounds detached from the listener.  While Jimmy sleeps he images the sounds being heard by the objects that make them.  This is a beautiful idea in and of itself but what strikes me as interesting is that Jimmy still includes himself in his sonic portrait; a body, lying still and unconscious, perhaps not listening to these sounds but somehow still connected to them.

What role does audio play in aiding sleep?  What role does audio play while we are asleep? These are both interesting questions to me and are central to my relay piece and inspired by Jimmy’s piece and thoughts.


I’ve sampled small portions of Jimmy’s piece and reconstructed them into very simple layered patterns that loop and oscillate.  For me they are the sounds of the process of sleep itself. They are the sounds of a sort of sleep machine, an audio bridge between the conscious and unconscious.

For this Exclusive Track Premiere, I'm actually inversing on my roles: instead of being the announcer, I am the featured artist, along with Uwe Zahn, for our collaborative album, title "Aeon" released on Eilean Rec. today.

During our private conversation through music, Uwe and I explored the most mysterious of mediums, dimensions and philosophies - that of "time". Time is what allows sound to exist, by carrying the pressure levels through its mythic axis. Timelessness is unbeknown to man, and concepts like "forever" and "eternity" are captured in a Latin word of "aeon". The German word "unendlich" describes the notion of infinity on which philosophers have puzzled over "ages". And as "finality" is easier to grasp, since all things come onto an end, we're left with "endlich" of ourselves and of our music.

Uwe and I sincerely hope that you connect with our studies and deconstructions thereof, inasmuch as you simply enjoy the beautiful music that we wanted to share, beyond all theories... beyond all thought... beyond all time...

The end of the year is approaching – can you feel it? It’s got that certain textural quality all of its own: the slightly quieter email box, the emptier train rides and the softer necessity in everything that you do. It’s like the world has collectively decided to just let it go, before the last day at the turn of the decade. And so I find myself in this familiar space, reviewing the year, and playing through tracks, one of which is an appropriate soundtrack to the flow of the moments. Fluctuate is a project by Cameron Brooks, who has previously appeared on these pages with a premiere of his piece “Final Solace“, from the Vicissitude EP released by Subtempo. He is now back, with an arsenal of sounds which still carry his piano forth: the slow evolving synth pads, fluttering echoes, and the sounds of the waves – all of which make up a short charming story that comes directly from the heart.
