Another “coming-hot” release lands on Quixotical Records: Alexander Klygin aka Ruksby (SXDNS256), the man of the hour, cooked two spicy originals for his debut on the rising Argentinian/Lithuanian label. The "Dr. Shpritz" EP comes also with four savoury remixes made with love by Memory Clap Acid, Teavatea, Andrea Zarco, and Caramel Chameleon.

Alex has been having quite a ride so far. His latest incursions on Logia, Veneno, Rare Wiri, NEIN, System 108, Oberwave, and U’Re Guay are solid evidence of his creativity and versatility in as much as he has managed to deliver not only high-stamina peak time cuts but also slo-mo retro-infused themes: His deal ranges from Disco to Techno, it’s simple like that.

Andrea Zarco, the author of the remix premiered here, is still at the beginning of her career in the production realm. Her take on the title track indicates how promising she is, though. In her hands, the acid of “Dr. Shpritz” is now extremely bouncing. A less trippy and melodic version, but definitely a more upbeat one, we dare to say. The laser-like percussive layer is also an interesting addition of the talented young rookie. Kudos!

Some labels have their names carved in marble when it comes to their importance to the origins of the modern Indie Dance/Nu Disco scene. Before such denominations even existed, Emerald & Doreen had already put out dozens of releases featuring such genres. And the German imprint simply cannot get enough of it by keeping a solid string of deliveries and maintaining its position among the most vital outlets of the game.

One of its freshest episodes is coming super hot, by the way: “Odyssey-10” is the new endeavour by the London-based duo Beyond The Struttosphere (SXDNS263), who invited Miss Zagato to collaborate in one of the tracks and none other than Vongold (SXDNS236), Ivan Fabra (SXDNS107), and Badknife for the remix duties.

With appearances on Disc-o-lypso, Gouranga, Mélopée, Astrolead, and IDWT, the Struttosphere lads are addicted to handing out high-quality cosmic-embedded gems, always featuring a lofty standard production technique allied with intense and fierce creativity – little wonder they have conquered so many hearts since their debut in 2019. 

Ivan Fabra, the mastermind behind the remix we were solicited to review/premiere, needs no introduction but let’s say a few words about him for those still not familiar with his career: The acclaimed Spanish virtuoso is one of those boogie heads who managed to keep the fire burning in nowadays’ times by delivering not only stunning Disco edits but also spot-on retro-soaked originals. The result can be seen on Boite Music, Spa In Disco, Sprechen, Nang, Paradiso, Love Attack, Internasjonal, N I G H T N O I S E, and E&D itself, just to name a few.

For his take on “Satellite Cities”, Master Fabra went nuts with the progressiveness and deepness. A leftfield aura comes forward and pairs perfectly with the soft guitar-like riffs and frolic laser FXs. The magnificent vocals by Miss Zagato cannot go unmentioned. They undoubtedly bring the theme to another level.

Since 2014, Silas Schletterer has been part of the Bordello A Parigi family. Under his Machinegewehr guise, the Rotterdam artist released three show-stopping synth centred records. 2023 sees him put out his fourth, Life. Burbling arpeggios, a signature of his sound, are present for “Sans.” Clever inviting melodies, another feature of Schletterer’s style, mix beautifully with clean percussion and samples for a definite dancefloor favourite. The title work follows. Measured and meditative, “Life” employs a familiar sound palette with very different outcomes. The pulsations, the throb, of Machinegewehr is there, but there is a considered melancholy that brins a bittersweet balance to the piece. Steady kicks and vocal snippets introduce “Pills.” Shifting melodies, piano stabs, driving rhythms and spoken word come together to create a heady brew of sheer pleasure. Vocals are central in the closer. “Neurons” narrates a fantastical story of subdued sci-fi sorrows and wistful yearning, all to a silken synth-pop soundtrack. A welcome return from a multifaceted musician.

"Interbay's got a cowbell and they're going to use it."  

Spinning the clock back 30 to 40 years or more (I am SO old) to capture some vibes from early house music productions to imbue that spirit into today's Interbay daily track drop.  Although there's a little more going on than you might expect, I did limit myself to a smaller palette for this one.  

The drums don't sound like cannons being shot off in a cathedral--they sound like the drum machines they are.  The bass isn't all growly or threatening your downstairs neighbors with sleepless nights, it sounds like a synthesizer making a fairly traditional bass sound.  

With all the tools available to us as modern music producers, it can be a relief to decide to make a track based on limiting your options--allowing you to focus on vibe, groove, and feel.  

(I remember watching Eliminate show his process during "Audio Combat" sessions, before I was given the keys to Phantom Laboratories West for my own work...and he bemoaned the process of choosing a snare sound.  I didn't get it at the time.  "Just pick a good sounding snare," I thought, "what's so hard about that?"  I'd watch him sample/scroll through a seemingly endless folder of snare samples and I thought that any of them would work just fine.  And that was what was causing the stress.  Any of them could work--so, how do you pick the one that will work best?  It reminds me of going to the optomotrist and having to choose between A and B when both look kind of the same--and they always sounds so annoyed when they have to present the same choice to you again because you're indecisive.  Well, I understand now, Nate.  And opportunities like I've taken today, to narrow the candidates list, is occasionally a good way to unburden yourself and move forward.  That's not advice to Nate--Nate knows.  Nate is wise and Nate is inspirational...probably why I made the decision to make Interbay a thing.  That's me leaving a hard copy reminder for myself the next time I get frustrated with the process.)  

A classic sample, a nod to a movie that for a certain generation (in other words, mine) was...memorable, to say the least.  (Formative, interesting, eye opening, heartrate increasing...hopefully you can trace the outline of what I'm getting at without me having to point it out, too obviously, for you), and some minimal house grooves leads to an Interbay track that makes me feel like Robocop, from Robocop 2, after he's rebooted himself to delete all of the unnecessary directives that were pumped into him by corporate overreach.  

(It makes want to get Kane, once and for all, and stop the city's dependence on Nuke.  Why is THAT something I remember off the top of my head without any effort and yet I can't remember what time the meeting of SEMPA is tonight?)  

This track isn't going to change the world...but it might be just the thing to start the vibes flowing towards a wonderful weekend.  It is my Thursday gift to you!
