I am so excited to share the latest, and most unique, Deep Mind Music entry. This mix, by my good friend Tahl, has been in the works for a long time. A mixtape of 100% saxophonic versions & originals which is the first manifestation of Tahl’s new alias for saxophonic exploration - loket.

A member of Berlin's Power Play collective, Tahl debuted the combination of live saxophone played over ambient music at the intimate confines of Power Play’s foggy chill out room. Tahl first proposed the idea of this mix to me back in April, and throughout lockdown he has been chipping away at it, keeping me updated as it has slowly evolved from a loose initial concept into a fully formed immersive journey. 

Taking the listener through flurries of arpeggios, introspective poetry, delicate piano, vulnerable vocals, and lush, sunlit pads, the mix resonates on a tender, personal level. A story told through prescient programming between tracks and sonic palettes, it subtly ebbs and flows between different emotional states. Throughout the mix the free flowing saxophone jams flitting between the tracks take you far, far away, adding a soft trippy fluidity to the edges of the soundscape. By the end of the mix you are totally submerged in effervescent mind-melting deepness.

I’m so grateful to loket for putting together this truly special entry, and I hope you enjoy listening to it, and find as much solace, peace and catharsis in it as I have.

Some words from loket about the mix: 

This project started in many ways in a dank room in what is now a demolished squat in Lichtenberg Berlin at a Power Play Rave in the middle of 2019. Empowered by an unreasonable Funktion One Soundsystem flush inside of our chill out room, I experimented with playing live modulated saxophone for the first time. 

I was shaking so intensely I could barely blow air through the horn. But when what I played was channeled through my computer and out into the audience, the power of the sound, and of the moment, was sickening. Since then I’ve spent many hours honing and sculpting and experimenting to try and bring that feeling “to tape”.

I can’t stress enough how much of this project has been an exercise in moving forward slowly while having mostly no idea what I’m doing. I’m sure i broke every “rule” imaginable in recording and processing the saxophone on this mix. Maybe that is somewhat reassuring to those of you who also feel burdened by the glossy perfection and successes seemingly surrounding us at all times.

It’s also an exercise in reconnection. In patience. I stopped playing saxophone entirely in 2010 because I felt inadequate in my jazz skill. I haven’t practiced “a lick” in 10 years. I barely remember basic scales. But by revisiting the saxophone many years later through a more imaginative and electronic production lens, I’ve been able to move closer to creating the voice I always wanted to make.
