The Poeticast - Episode 309 (Andrea HG Guest Mix)

Music has always been a means of coping with the otherness and hybridity Shanti experienced throughout her life. While she is a philosopher and writer, Shanti has felt limited by words and has recognized the transcendent ability of music to express abstract concepts, states of consciousness, and conflicting emotions. She explores philosophical themes of existential despair and ambiguity through eerie, atmospheric and bass-heavy techno, angsty industrial/dark wave, squishy acid, and longing lofi-ambient soundscapes. Her sets weave a story of the simultaneous despair and yearning that are intertwined with the human condition while building a necessary tension leading to a cathartic release of emotions. 

Shanti has a monthly show, "Liminal" on Beloved Radio (starting in April). She also plays in the DJ duo, Evanti with Plumb.ee and hosts Otherworldly Ambiguity, an experience centered around the phenomenon of occupying the spaces in between and outside of pre-existing concepts and rigid categories.

Amsterdam-based DJ @mattikk began collecting records in the heady years of the mid-2000s. Although he found himself initially attracted to genres as diverse as hardcore, industrial, breakcore and jungle, his tastes soon widened even further to encompass dubstep, techno, and everything in between. 
Over time, his deep musical knowledge and passion for the scene naturally saw him gravitate towards work in the industry, taking up a label manager/A&R role for the legendary Dutch imprint @delsinrecords - a position that he still occupies today.

As a seasoned DJ, Mattikk has held down with residencies at Amsterdam’s Studio 80 and Shelter clubs, as well as hosting a monthly show on @redlightradio. His reputation for envelope-pushing, genre-bending, hypnotic and weird selections has seen him perform at some of the world’s most iconic techno clubs and festivals, including Berghain, De School, Trouw, Dekmantel and Bassiani. Next year promises to be an exciting one for Mattikk, with the inception of his own Delsin sub-label, with releases planned from Forest Drive West and natural/electronic.system., among others.

Building from an initially slow tempo to form a steadily intensifying collage of eclectic selections, Mattikk’s Patterns of Perception 56 is not only cohesive, but also utterly compelling.

Lonefront is the production moniker of Ross Lafayette Hutchens, a hybrid trackmaker, Live PA and modular synth artist whose work is both integral to and anomalous within Minneapolis’s percolating techno underground. His recording catalog reveals a project that remains singularly focused while navigating a slurry of idiomatic shifts and material rigs: the churning Cimilada Qaxootiga (MJMJ, 2017) drew from materials re-composed from a live modular set, while 2019’s Plastic Dreams EP seems to signal toward the place where Gradient Descent dwells.

Gradient Descent marks the crystallization of Lonefront’s trademark carbon-on-silicon method into a sharp and distinct compositional style: equally deft with unruly, extended trips into modular deep-dreaming as he is with sculptural sound-design gestures that dangle listeners in the void of ‘post-rave,’ Hutchens’s defamiliarized mode of techno re-stitches these busted compositional forms into a “program for the reanimation of dead materials.”  The brisk triad of extended pieces on Gradient Descent takes up distinct techno-idioms while maintaining a unitary feel throughout. 

The lead title track bubbles with a pressurized tension, lightly surfing a recombinant grid of narrow arpeggios and gardenpath rhythms before opening up onto a plain filled with gushing channel noise. The pressure never quite boils over before the torched-metal orchestrals of “Fear Collapse” slam into lock-step. A lucid and dramatic centerpiece, the track shows Lonefront’s aptitude to reroute oft-abused generic markers (in this case, the industrial kick) by channeling them into a system that draws out latent affect without demanding it. The rinsed, cackling synth warbles of “Everything is Dripping with Laughter” round out the effort, summoning a base of warm colundi frequencies and Stalker-reminiscent reverberations, riding the bounce of self-inoculating humor coyly toward a receding info-horizon.
