Following his debut EP, Nostalgia, Blokc returns in full force with the Elements EP, released on Strange Town Recordings. Comprised of two original productions and two remixes, Blokc makes use of his own live cello recordings to explore the emotional dichotomy between analog and digital, acoustic and electronic. 

Washington tells a tale of power, controversy and perseverance. As the inquisitive introduction makes its way through time and space, a bass drum emerges from the abyss and begins establishing the inevitable driving force of shakers, filters, powerful bass and intermeddling melodic stabs that are soon to become reality. Blokc creates a unique narrative in which tension and release take the listener on an unforgettable voyage.  

Resemblances begins as a tech-infused dream, as an ominous pad sweeps over only to welcome a breath of fresh air in the form of a white noise burst before hi-hats and a variety of delayed stabs take over both the stereo and frequency spectrum. Over the course of the seven minute epic, cellos and synthesizers combine in flawless fashion before coitus interuptus breaks the flow, tension rising, before culminating in the point of no return as white noise brings the listener back to reality. The track ends the way it started, as a dream, resembling an intimate aural journey of the heart and soul. 

On remix duties Inlab Recordings head Teho takes Resemblences to the peak time dance moment with an overdrive of emotions. As BIconection reworks Washington into an uplifting collage of the original with an infectious melody that will keep you humming this tune for days!

From ambient soundscapes, down-tempo vocal tracks and slo-mo house, through to deliciously deep experiments, firing tech-house and acid grooves, “It Is What It Is”, the supremely exciting double-disc debut artist album from Stelios Vassiloudis, was released on Bedrock at the tail end of 2011. Then, at the height of summer 2012, came the first of a planned series of album remix packages featuring interpretations from some of the most exciting producers from around the world, fittingly titled “It Was What It Was”. Now, at the start of 2014, comes the next highly anticipated, super-exciting selection of remixes.

The original album is rich with the many vocal talents it hosts, one of the most glorious contributions coming from Astrid Suryanto on “Feed”, giving Russ Gabriel (whose name has been synonymous with UK Techno since 1993) the perfect backdrop to create an absolutely beautiful, fresh interpretation. The brilliant One Of Them (aka New York based Niko Dalagelis) continues with the beauty theme, taking the vocal contribution of Japan’s Tomomi Ukomori on “Green Is Blue” into a deeply chilled house excursion, whilst the Japanese music master, Satoshi Tomiie, interprets things a more upbeat manner that is equally enthralling for his remix.

Guy J’s work is always touched with a magic and emotion that few rival and his remix of “I Burn Like” is yet another example of why his productions are so special. This time the distinctive original vocals of Darren Murphy are meshed into a deeply hypnotic journey. In contrast, Wiretappeur (the production partnership between Florian Kruse, Nils Nurnberg and Stelios himself) turn “I Burn Like” into a seductive slo-mo vocal house masterpiece.

Dieb Audio’s John Dalagelis (brother of the aforementioned Niko) was heavily involved in the original album project and returns here with a delightfully adventurous, jazz-influenced, widescreen techno take on “Repetition”. The superb selection of creative remixes is brought to a finale with India’s Arjun Vagale joining forces with Spain’s Ramiro Lopez to put together a frenetic percussive acid interpretation of “What's That” (odd one out here as the original track first appeared on the Bedrock 14 compilation album).

Anyone open to the emotions on display here really should check out “It Is What It Is”, the original debut artist album by Stelios Vassiloudis, as it is much more than a collection of great tracks. It’s an exceptionally exciting, bold and brave body of music that defiantly stands the test of time, beyond fickle trends and fashions, and remains a benchmark release from Bedrock to this day.

After dropping several tracks and performing at select festivals throughout the years, Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen dedicated the year 2014 to explore the area in-between Ólafur’s more acoustic, piano-based solo work and Janus’s synth-heavy electro pop, with their collaborative electronic project Kiasmos.

By focusing solely on their self-titled debut album, Ólafur and Janus have been able to combine and further develop their unique sound aesthetics to complete an album driven by their mutual love for electronic music. Made in Ólafur’s newly build studio in Reykjavík, Iceland, a majority of the album was recorded using acoustic instruments next to a variety of synthesisers, drum machines and tape delays. It features a live drummer, string quartet and Ólafur performing on the grand piano, producing an ambient, textured sound, which makes it a perfect home listen and equally danceable record. If you listen closely, you can spot them record the thumb piano, finger snapping and even the sound of the metal grinder of a lighter slowly to replace the usual electronic hi-hat sounds, giving the album a far more intimate and unique atmosphere.

“We decided to start almost completely over with this record, so most of the material is written this year with the idea of making a record that can stand as one piece rather than a collection of songs. I am very excited to get a proper record out exploring a different territory than I am used to. I touch a lot on electronic genres in my own music but never have the opportunity to go full out electronic like we do here.” – Ólafur Arnalds

Almost two years have gone by since Luca and Guti last locked themselves in a studio to produce together. “Loneliness” is one of those pieces which come from the heart without planning. In the meantime the pair have got thousands out on the dance-floor playing it in clubs all around the world, with Guti even including it on his Essential Mix for BBC1.
There’s a great story behind this track, as Luca explains: “I’d always dreamed of visiting Rio de Janeiro, and from my research I fell in love with that “Scala” in Lapa, a Rio neighbourhood where the Chilean artist Jorge Selaron lives. I had wondered who was responsible for that flight of stairs which features in so many commercials and has become one of the symbols of the city. Jorge had made a deep impression on me and I proposed to Guti that we use the voice of this artist to tell a story and together we decided to write an emotional piece entitled “Loneliness” which would combine the two sentiments of “melancholy” and “joy”. Last October during the Brasilian leg of the tour I had the chance to visit Rio and as I was dying to meet Jorge I went to Santa Teresa to interview him. I was fortunate to be able to meet this unique artist just a few weeks before his tragic death. An artist who expressed a sense of solitude, together with restlessness and even madness, in the sole company of his faithful obsession: his stairs!”
Was it intuition or just coincidence to have called the track “Loneliness”? Listening to it now it sounds even more true and emotional. Following the continual requests of club goers and as a result of this incredible journey Luca and Guti finally decided to release the track. A small but sincere homage to all those artists who just like Selaron live in a sort of solitude, far away from the “noise”, in their own fashion changing their world and ours.

A fresh addition to the Anjunadeep stable, the highly regarded Belgian pairing of Jean Vanesse and Thomas Sohet, aka Spirit Catcher, make a bold entrance with the brilliant "Black Pitch EP". 

Having graced seminal labels 2020Vision, Moodmusic and Freerange over their 10 year career, Spirit Catcher have continued to push a deep, funk-informed groove. Incorporating melodic 80s vibes and modern electronic influences, the "Black Pitch EP" showcases their dynamic sound at its finest. 

Setting the tone perfectly, title track "Black Pitch" comes straight out of the blocks with a dark, immersive baseline, before delicate melodies and rising pads combine for a swirling crescendo - tied together with an infectious vocal hook. 

With hallmarks of a classic house track, "Vintage Point" teases a rising techno-influenced groove and builds to a discordant climax.

Taking things deeper still,  "Miss U Right Now" rounds off the EP. Crisp percussion and a rolling groove lay the foundation for a slow burning jam, complete with hypnotic bass stabs and another spoken word refrain.
