After working on the short film score for Alex Lockwood's "Test Subjects" in 2019, the BAFTA award-winning director again approached Aaron Martin about working on the original music for his first feature-length documentary film "The End of Medicine" with Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix acting as executive producers. The documentary explores zoonotic diseases and antimicrobial resistance, which threaten the health and lives of the entire human population.

Tilin is a Yakut word meaning 'to revive/recovery/resurrection'. This song came after frequent appearances in my Instagram of the band OTYKEN (https://www.youtube.com/@OTYKEN/about). I also have a friend who is from Siberia. I learned from him that the band is quite well known in Russia (and beyond). My friend is Yakut, while OTYKEN is a different Siberian background. The conversation and the band inspired me to write this song. OTYKEN is definitely an influence, though this song is very different from what they do. It is both my interpretation of that Siberian influence and also a song about recovery. It's about the seasons, the cycle of the planet and about a wish for revival and healing of the planet. I hope you enjoy it! Let me know in the comments what you think.

Masayoshi Fujita, the Berlin-based Japanese vibraphone player, also known under his alias el fog came to the attention of label founder Robert Raths a few years ago. Not only because the vibraphone is an intriguing instrument, but also the way Masayoshi treats his instrument and draws ethereal and layered sounds, is what truly attracted him to Masayoshi’s work.

Having released more ambient-based/electronic recordings of the vibraphone under el fog, Masa became more interested in the sound of the vibraphone itself. He started to compose acoustic pieces and released the first solo album under his real name, titled ‘Stories’, in early 2013. ‘Apologues’ sees Masayoshi for the first time use an array of instruments besides his lead instrument – such as the violin, cello, flute, clarinet, French horn, accordion, piano and snare drum played by friends, but arranged by Masa himself.

In addition to the mallets, Masayoshi often plays the vibraphone with a violin or cello bow, like on ‘Tears of Unicorn’ and ‘Knight and Spirit of Lake’. He would also place bead strings on the vibraphone bars to create an ambient shimmer that can be heard on songs like ‘Moonlight’ and ‘Swallow Flies High in the May Sky’. The latter was composed to let the clarinet express its characteristics and tell its story, whilst the vibraphone takes a supporting role. “The clarinet sounds very warm and soft and very ‘spring’ to me”, says Masa.

“With this album the main idea was to evoke images, atmospheres, sceneries and stories in the listener, the images that have accumulated in myself. At the same time it was an exploration of the unexplored beauty of the vibraphone, and also a pursuit of the charm of the instrumentation and the music itself. Erased Tapes releases a lot of great stuff and naturally became my favourite label of late. And I thought it would fit well to my music.” – Masayoshi Fujita

In the beginning the universe was full of light. Shining bright and incredibly energetic no solid matter could exist. As the universe expanded, the light became less energetic until the very first hydrogen atom could form. More followed forming molecules which in turn merged into gargantuan molecular clouds until they collapsed under their own weight, giving birth to the first stars, illuminating the universe once again. Being monstrous fusion factories, these stars burned hydrogen to complex chemical elements and eventually exploded leaving even more complex elements behind. After two such stellar cycles, there was enough material in the universe to form all solid matter that we know to exist today. Yet, everything began with the very first atom ...

Synecdoche - the whole consists of parts, and each and every part embodies the whole. This motif is at the heart of Saffronkeiras so named fourth album. Saffronkeira is a project established in 2008 by Eugenio Caria from the island of Sardinia, Italy. With Saffronkeira, Eugenio Caria lives out his passion of being a researcher of the possibility of expression offered by currently available technology. Indeed, in his tracks he experiments a lot with electronics and unconventional elements, which sometimes seem meaningless at first sight, but uncover their significance only on a closer examination. Combining subtle and sometimes even almost invisible rhythms with textures of sound he confidently moves between minimalistic pieces and classic ambient tracks which should please both the analytic ears and the listeners who just want to dive into the music.

Saffronkeira's previous album "Cause and Effect" constituted the first ever collaboration work of Caria and resulted from a close and unique joint work with trumpeter Mario Massa. Synecdoche picks up this collaboration idea, but this time features collaboration with various different artists, namely Mia Zabelka and Siavash Amini & Idlefon, as well as the Denovali artists Field Rotation, Sebastian Plano, Subheim and Witxes. Mixed and mastered by Alex Gámez at Störung Studio, Synecdoche brings Saffronkeira's distinct electronic sound to a next level which is further perfected by the individual and fascinatingly diverse collaborations.

'Bow Shock' is the second taster from forthcoming album, 'Staccato Signals', following 'Fossils'. 

While the latter encapsulated Chatwin's innovative marriage of strings with his arsenal of analogue and modular synths, 'Bow Shock' is the album's most prominent example of Chatwin's use of brass - folded and buried within his industrial electronic template, pushing the palette of sound further into the composer's own unique hybrid of electronic and acoustic.
