LOP GUEST MIX SERIES 001: MAD GAVS

With drumline level snare patterns, PUFF.magic begins her latest single, “Elements Of Style.” After its minimalist exposition, this rapid fire jungle track evolves into a seamless solution of liquid-metal. Sporadic vocal samples float on the outside before cutting through the center as the drums and bass provide a mobile canvas wherein colorful synths distort the boundaries between audio and visual.

PUFF.magic was producing leftfield bass music way before it was cool. Now that it is cool, the world is waking up to their undeniable talent for manipulating rhythms that are heavy, yet fast-paced. To harness that contrast is to traverse dangerous terrain in the sonic realm of electronic music.

PUFF.magic has been deep in that dangerous terrain for years, trying their hand at juke, footwork, and breakbeat among other styles, and yielding seriously impressive results. They’re coming off a joint release with Hypesteria for LA’s Black Marble Collective, their jazz-infused debut EP, Soul Antics, and they are now commencing the catalog for another forward thinking outfit in LA: Lots Of Practice.

Elements of Style - PUFF.magic

Driven to pioneer the frontiers of musical expression, French-born KAYA (@kayamusique)(Jean-Philippe Kaya) merges extensive classical piano and composition training with his Congolese-Cameroonian heritage to push boundaries and test novel approaches to sound. After studying in Montreal, and later working with legends like Hans Zimmer and Pete Tong in Los Angeles, KAYA drew inspiration from the raw beats of both cities to develop his own singular style, which led him on a national gig journey opening for the likes of Deadmau5, Habstrakt, and A-Trak.  With upcoming original releases and a collaboration with SNBRN underway, KAYA is set to launch his first live electronic pop duo act in Europe this summer along with fellow collaborator FRENCH ORIGINAL. Together, they continue to challenge individuals’ listening experiences with relentless momentum to diversify new paradigms of blended sounds.

Based in the eclectic, high paced city of Los Angeles, Alixandria Andre, known by her artist name @Etari, is a Dj and music producer that fuses her love for ethereal grooves through imaginative productions, diverse Dj sets, and inspired studio mixes. With vibrant visions of pursuing her passion for music, she taught herself how to Dj 10 years ago where she first started mixing with CDs on an ancient Numark Universal Mixdeck. With daily practice as a bedroom Dj for the first five years, she discovered bits of her artistic style which guided her to where she is today. Etari is a part of a Brazilian based label called Yellow Island Records where she released her debut EP "Healing Herself" which features spacious, melodious cuts with raw, rhythmic patterns that make it her unique sound. She is also one of the hosts of Yellow Island Records show on Balamii radio featuring special guests like Holly Lester, Iron Curtis, Cameo Blush & many more. Etari is also a resident Dj for LA based label Low Recordings where she's played some of her favorite gigs yet alongside artists like Felipe Gordon, Grant and Urulu. In March 2021, she released her very first album "Rainbow Eucalyptus" on LA based label 100% Silk which is heavily inspired by nature and a mixture of all the sounds she loves. A true lover of hypnotic house, broken beats & airy melodic sounds, you can be sure to hear more of Etari's idiosyncratic productions in the coming years as she expands her artistic craft.

When you catch SiLVA every Friday night from 10PM to 1AM on member-supported KCRW, she isn’t just maintaining the smooth vibes with her commentary. She is cruising through the night, picking excellent and felicitous music, building aural landbridges between Led Zeppelin and Justin Jay; between Robag Wruhme and Donna Summer.

Only someone with a mind for what works could put together the eclectic dancefloor jam that is “Elevate Us,” the new single on Lots Of Practice.

Within the track’s five minutes, SiLVA effortlessly combines house music, deep house, and acid house in a manner that is as professional as it is seductive. Multi disciplinary artist, @NikkoAxzul , is most known for his disco and soulful flavors of House on dance-floors throughout Mexico— where he’s been living the past couple of years. The Los Angeles native had been receiving some attention throwing small renegades out of his art van across the United States at the start of the pandemic, bringing music to the streets at a time needed most. You can catch him doing the same thing this upcoming months in New York, all summer long. In this mix, recorded exclusively for LOP, he gets back to his love for jazz and hip-hop with a variety of house tracks influenced by the genres. Smooth, silky and seductive sounds can expected in this series of selections by Nikko Axzul.

Born in Toronto, Dittorama formed through a mutual love for Chicago footwork in 2019. During the pandemic they formed a community on Twitch that allowed them to share their sound and meet new like-minded people. Fresh into the scene, they have found a home with Work That, a local party that welcomes a wide range of electronic music. The following mix is inspired by their set from Work That’s second party on May 14th.

LOP GUEST MIX SERIES 017: DITTORAMA

Enter LA-native electronic musician, DJ, and audio engineer Danny Goliger with his absolutely hammering rendition of the track. If the walls weren’t already blown away, this would be careening off of every single one. Danny builds tension like a master at work, utilizing the vocal trills and dark atmospheric percussion to drop a heavy dance floor destroyer into the mix. 

Danny’s previous releases have graced Dirtybird’s White Label, Scuffed Recordings and of course, Fantastic Voyage, where he’s one of the original members of the LA based DJ crew, record label, and party series. A multi-instrumentalist, Danny has toured extensively on drums and keys. He is also a veteran engineer who has considerable experience working in commercial recording studios throughout LA. He brings this wide ranging musical experience into his productions and DJ sets, creating and curating music that pushes the boundaries of sonic and rhythmic exploration. From commanding rowdy renegades to being at the helm of an upcoming radio show on Dublab, Danny is far from done.

Trinity: The Remixes

Hannah Monica, Keyspan - Trinity (Danny Goliger Remix)

For Olivia Johnson, known to crowded dance floors as OJ, a big part of her musical journey is trying to unlock a fuller expression of herself. For those that know, OJ unlocking her production prowess is a new force to be reckoned with. For ‘Resolve To Rave’, much like how OJ would describe raving itself, we have a small but impactful slice of peace and euphoria. It’s about that feeling, deep down, connecting with yourself during and after nights spent with friends and chosen family, in a pulsing room with the crowd embracing each moment. Resolve To Rave speaks to her resolve to chase that feeling, unlock her inner artist and shake off any fear or uncertainty that might come along the way. 

Bottom line, this track is an out of body experience. Bouncing breaks, flying through euphoric pads and an echoing, colorful panning choir leads to an epic call and response that you won’t soon forget. It’s rare that a song with such high energy and driving force can get you to slow down and reflect, diving further into the moment in hand, but this unconventionally catchy tune does just that. 

OJ is a DJ and producer based in Los Angeles. Leaning toward leftfield and nostalgic rave sounds with a dark side, she draws inspiration from experiences of catharsis & connection in LA’s underground and festivals around the world. She first dabbled in DJing at Westside bars  pre-pandemic, but over the past year she's been making her name in LA and beyond, lighting up dancefloors for parties like Closer LA, Stereo Punks, Wicked Paradise, Tropicaza, Best of Friends and more, from DIY warehouses to Sound Nightclub. Her multigenre sets and original productions fuse breaks, techno, house and electro and though this is her first original release, you better believe she’s got more on the way.

OJ - Resolve To Rave

Actual returns to Lots of Practice with a footwork inspired track that’s a powerful product of his growing musical ingenuity. Right from the start, sounds surround you, strapping you in for the skillfully tuned breaks and robust percussive build in its design. 

Actual’s ability to effortlessly elicit such strong emotions throughout the entirety of this piece leaves the listener wanting more; and that’s exactly what we’re hoping for from this rising star. 

Since the Ōtepoti/Dunedin Aotearoa/New Zealand producer first released with Lots of Practice, he’s managed to find himself on a coveted compilation from Juke Bounce Werk and his previously released EP, Teviot (with artist, cinamin) has been climbing all over the Beatport breaks charts. His tracks have been supported by Jyoty on Rinse FM, SiLVA on KCRW in Los Angeles, and he continues to impress us and those who get a chance to hear his progress. 

Actual is a name that you’re going to be hearing more and more of and we’re thrilled to be a part of his journey.

The Maiden of the Matrix is the first track Kita and Maude Vôs have written together in 7 years. Prior to their solo projects they produced music together for a number of years as a duo. Rewinding even further back, “Kita and I met on a dance floor over 10 years ago and were instantly soul bonded. She was my first real collaborator and mentored me through the beginning of my production journey. She continues to inspire me to find my voice, dig into my well of experience and to ground into what feels aligned with my soul purpose”. Kita has lived in Bali for the last 5 years, as a sound healer at the Temples of Chi. “Although life has pulled us sonically and physically in different directions, this song reflects our continued connection over the past decade”. The Maiden of the Matrix more specifically delves into unity through community especially in the chaos of the world. During these times we must continue to open our hearts, and show up meaningfully; this will be the remedy, the anchor and the expander.

Shimmering with metallic warmth, fluid melodies, and dark tension, Maude Vôs’ productions and live performances are marked by an infectious energy and multifaceted enthusiasm for creating and connecting. Channeling the organic flow of a studio wired with a panoply of hardware gear, the Los Angeles-based artist has cultivated a growing catalog of distinctive releases and remixes alongside their professional work as a sound designer and composer. As a DJ, their sparkling, psychedelic mixes are filled with lush atmospheres, whispered vocals, and synthesizer music of all genres. Vôs appears in the book Patch and Tweak with Korg (Bjooks, 2022), was recently named an artist to watch by DJ Mag, and has been featured by SPIN Magazine and Perfect Circuit. Dynamic and deeply felt, their creativity shines with an optimistic, expansive vision of mutual exchange and soul connection.

You feel that? That’s Ed Hoffman and Barbara conjuring a quake to make your booty shake! Their track Queen B is a high octane, powerful celebration of booty shaking self-love and expression. Backed with Ed’s acid hits and enticing vocalization from Barbara, this combo packs the kind of heat that could make the sun blush.

Firing on all cylinders, this collaboration’s creation came from the silly, playful, anything goes environment that their studio session brought forth. Built on the sassy riffing and fun-loving energy in the room and bolstered by blistering kicks and drums, Queen B makes its strong statement for driving electro royalty.

Boston born Barbara is the epitome of modern talent. She’s not only a house DJ but also a pop singer-songwriter and producer. She possesses 3 superpowers: knowing a good beat, crafting super catchy pop hooks, and spreading joy with her music & positive personality. After years spinning at clubs (Black Flamingo, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, 1015 Folsom) and parties (Daybreaker, Google I/O, Burning Man) she created her first album, Palm Dreams, over 2 intense weeks in the fall of 2022, putting hundreds of voice memos, laptop productions, and many nights of raving to good use. If you’ve seen Barbara live, she’s all gas and no brakes. She’s a bonafide one to watch for 2024.

While diverse in his repertoire, Ed’s sound is grounded in his ability to bring his distinct flavor of energy to each track he writes, harnessing unmistakable childlike energy that evokes equal parts self-confidence and silliness. It’s that liberating feeling you get when you’ve released yourself from the shackles of expectations, and being able to express your true, inner colors without fear of judgment. For the San Francisco-based DJ/Producer, community is half of the equation, and what drives him to inspire and help as many future artists to also pursue their dreams. Ed has released music on Fantastic Voyage, Data Transmission, OFDM, Bomb Ass House, Schmuzik Records and Wildcard Records. Pulling up on the b-side is Onyx Era, Maude’s first go at a DNB tune. “DNB was my portal into electronic music. It was the first genre I found movement with on the dance floor. I wanted to make a tune that showcases depth and grounding juxtaposed hype, energy and activation that makes one dance”. Onyx Era is a dubby liquid tune with “jump up” style interludes that drop us into our solar plexus while simultaneously carrying us cerebrally.

D. Tyrone is a queer producer based in Naarm/Melbourne. First and foremost, Dirk plays and makes music that is purpose-built to move queer bodies and to fill horny and/or moody clubs. After growing their love of dance music, DJing and throwing parties in Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland, Dirk has developed an eclectic approach to spinning garage, breaks, and house tunes in their sets 🎧🎲

She has played in support of names like Special Request , TSVI, Roza Terenzi, D.Tiffany, and Ellen Allien, plus recently made her inaugural festival appearances at both Coachella and CRSSD 🌴🐍

Newcomers to the label but familiar faces nonetheless, OFTK and Ema Sakura team up for a bouncy-euphoric, acid infused stepper that seamlessly blends multiple styles into one beautiful blossoming track, aptly named Bloom. Both artists bring their own unique approaches to building this auditory art together and, in doing so, present a marvelous mixture of sounds that compliment each other tremendously. 

Bloom stems from OFTK and Ema Sakura’s collection of bizarre vocal samples and a desire to create an acidic breakbeat track. Like a lotus flower, the track blossomed amidst a flood of countless titles and backstories — none of which make any sense. The end product reflects this flowering of sorts…

Ryan Valenzuela aka OFTK (One For The Kids) is a Los Angeles, CA based music producer & DJ whose musicality ranges anywhere from melodic deep and progressive, to house and techno, to Jersey bounce and breaks – taking inspiration from a multitude of artists including Kaskade, Porter Robinson, Spencer Brown, R3LL, Anna Lunoe, Sam Gellaitry, & the Soulection crew (to name a few). Behind the decks, OFTK’s open-format style and tasteful curation form sets that fluidly bends genres with the aim to move dance floors and engage listeners to be one with the music…because this music is one for the kids.

Ema Sakura is a music producer and classically trained musician from San Francisco, California. With a strong foundation as an upright bassist, Ema studied music at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, specializing in bass performance, and has performed professionally with various orchestras and ensembles throughout California. Since completing her studies in 2018, Ema has ventured beyond her classical roots, pursuing music production and DJing. Ema's compositions feature ethereal vocals, Japanese nostalgia, and dreamy atmospheres, as well as melodic and harmonic elements that pay homage to her classical background. Through her music, she invites listeners into her world of inspiration as she weaves a tapestry that juxtaposes darkness and beauty.

In a merging of darkness, light and every shade in between, the combined forces that are Ema Sakura and OFTK bring us a powerful statement piece that’s sure to just be the beginning of their journey in Bloom.

‘Tell Me’, the light and airy drum and bass tune, is the window into Ema Sakura’s world of lucious soundscapes and unique meditative melodies in her upcoming EP, Good Either Way. ‘Tell Me’ is soft and powerful all at the same time. The single perfectly encapsulates the feeling of soaring through the clouds and compliments the percussive melodic house that pours out of the EP itself.

Ema Sakura - Tell Me

Ema Sakura’s Good Either Way EP is so good in every way. Making her solo debut on Lots of Practice, she welcomes us into her world of luscious soundscapes and unique meditative melodies. Each of the 5 tracks that make up this project dip into a delicate, warm ambience that brings you to a place of comfort and reflection.

From the light and airy drum and bass tune, ‘Tell Me’, we go down a perfectly paced path of percussive melodic house and electronica, filled with a dynamic array of emotions in ‘Higher’, ‘Tōsō’, and ‘Wait For Me’ all leading us to the EP’s namesake ‘Good Either Way’ that sends us to a feeling of pure bliss. A year in the making, these tracks were started during a challenging time for Ema, each one building on the next and pushing her forward to finish on the other side, encapsulating the ups and downs, tears and happiness, leaving her all in the music.

In the Good Either Way EP, we find Ema venturing beyond her classical roots, with compositions featuring ethereal vocals, Japanese nostalgia, and dreamy atmospheres, with harmonic elements that pay homage to her classical background.
