The Spectral iteration of the Ghostly 15 mixes comes courtesy of Derek Plaslaiko (who recently completed a grueling 12 hour Boiler Room out of his home in Berlin: http://boilerroom.tv/recording/derek-plaslaiko-12-hour-set/). Some words from Plaslaiko on the emergence of Spectral Sound & the mix he has curated below:

"I met Sam Valenti IV in the later years of the 90's just after he started the Ghostly International label. I feel like I almost instantly connected with Ghostly due to the music, but also because of the asthetic. Sam & I had more than a couple conversations about labels like Factory and 4AD and how the art was synonymously as important as the music it accompanied. I couldn't agree with him more!

As Ghostly grew, I think Sam realized that the more dancefloor-oriented music should almost have it's own place. Enter Spectral Sound.

Spectral Sound often gets confused as Ghostly. For instance, I am considered a Spectral Sound DJ, yet there are plenty of times that promoters end up simply putting Ghostly International next to my name. This doesn't offend me or anything, but the labels are quite different, and equally as important in my eyes. Spectral went on to help pave the way for what would end up being the "minimal" sound embraced first in Berlin, and then the rest of the world. However, I wouldn't just pin Spectral down as a "minimal" label. I feel Spectral (as well as Ghostly) is a great example of a dance music oriented label putting out music they like regardless of what genre it falls under. House, Acid House, Deep House, Tech House, Hard Techno, Deep Techno, Minimal Techno... you can find all of this and a lot more within Spectral's vast catalog.

So, Sam has asked me to pick 15 of my favorite Spectral Sound tracks and I gotta say... this list is a really hard one to make! How do I chose only 15 cuts of this incredible catalog? And even if I did, how much of it would be occupied by tracks produced by Matthew, Tadd and Todd? To pick 15 favorites from just those 3 artists alone would be a difficult challenge, as they are easily 3 of my favorite producers of dance music out there! So, I tried to limit my picks of them to each of their project names.

I had been asked to to the mix compilation that accompanied the Spectral Sound Vol 2 compilation that came out in 2008. So, there are MANY of my favorite Spectral cuts on there (you can find it on Spotify). I mention this only because there are a few repeats in this list, but I just couldn't help myself because I still play those tracks to this day.

What was she gonna do for fun now? This might as well be it. The apartment walls rose all around her amidst an empty room, the floorboards creaked beneath her feet as she paced to and fro. There was an itch, a craving, a desire which would never be fulfilled, it made her sad, oh so sad. 

Pitch originally released "What Am I Gonna Do For Fun" back in the early eighties. Now the newly founded label Idle Press are set to reissue it with a remix from Salon Des Amateurs founder Tolouse Low Trax.

Simon Heath shows himself and the world, yet again, that no man is ever truly the master of their art unless they strive to evolve with it. The soundscapes he has created bypass the conscious mind, taking the listener deep into his pristine nightmare. The evolution of sound is spot-on and sets Atrium Carceri apart from other lazy dark ambient acts by being a truly diverse piece, replete with details upon details to make the illusion complete, and haunting compositions to make the mind yearn.
