At first light, the dawn songs of Spiny-cheeked Honeyeaters predominate, gracing the early dawn soundscape with a beautiful yet melancholy quality. Also occasional Owlet Nightjar calls (which have continued all through the night), Grey Butcherbirds, a couple of Emu 'drummings', some distant Ravens, amongst others; and, in the distance, briefly, a couple of strays that ought not to have been there at all.  Throughout, the sound of the wind rising and falling, through Mallee woodland of Eucalyptus and Casuarina trees.

2023.02.19 Quiet Dawn Of Souls (Second Light)

Full moon, midnight,  slightly windy weather in Monte Baldo, Valfredda, Verona, Italy, 11 July 2014.
At 1300 meters of altitude, in a small pond, we recorded a chorus of Yellow-bellied toad and European tree frog while an uncommon bat, Tadarida teniotis, flying over the wetland (see the lines call at about 10 KHz).
We used a parabolic stereo microphone with 3+3 Primo EM172 capsules parallel connected.
I wish to thank Paolo Cugildi and his wife for the friendly and warm welcome in Malga Natura and Federico Novelli for the assistance during the recording.

Trying out a new Sony PCM-D50 with MiniPIP microphones. A mixed finch flock feeding in the canopy of mature Sitka Spruce in Haldon Forest, Devon, UK, with Crossbill, Siskin, Goldfinch, Greenfinch, Chaffinch and possibly other species as well. This recording is unedited except for fade in/out and a normalisation to -3db.

This was a beautiful recording to capture. My field recorder was located on top of a 300' ravine overlooking the Chattooga River. The combination of wind sounds and that of the river make for a very relaxing soundscape. As the sun sets, you can hear the wind, tree limbs knocking together and some birds in the background.

Because there was almost zero noise pollution at this location, I am able to share this 11 minute recording of pure nature sounds with you!
 
Recorded with a DIY binaural SASS recording rig with Primo EM-172 microphone capsules. I use this setup paired with an Olympus LS-10 recorder for a low budget, low noise option.

Wind Sounds @ Sunset | 11 Minute Nature Field Recording

This recording was INSANE! 

At 3am, I was awoken by this thunder storm. I remembered I had left my car windows cracked so I quickly dressed and went outside to close them. Before I went back inside, I stayed on the porch for a few minutes just listening to the storm. I realized that this was a huge storm and would be a great opportunity for field recording! I went back inside, grabbed my Sony D-100 and got to work. 

The full-length recording is 24 minutes but I could only use this 15 minute section because I initially had my gain set too high. As the storm increased in intensity, I had to lower my gain twice. This segment is the pinnacle of the storm. The bolts of lightning were so loud they literally reverberated inside my body.  

I have never experienced a thunderstorm this close in proximity. Next time I record lightning, I will be sure to set my gains lower initially.

Insane Lightning Storm Sounds of Thunder [Field Recording]

While exploring an unnamed trail near Ceasars Head State Park in South Carolina, I came across this beautiful stream. When I came home, I did some research and discovered the stream is known as Matthews Creek. I recorded two parcels of this stream. 

This recording is of a medium to low-flow section, very relaxing to listen to. I noticed a lot of bear activity in this area and I even think I found a den. I am planning to return and leave my recording equipment in the field to try and capture the sound of bears!

Medium Flow Stream Recording | Matthews Creek, SC

I recorded this soundscape at my friend's cabin in Vermont near the Green Mountain National Forest. The forest was covered in a thick layer of ice from a recent freezing rain storm. 

While I was chopping wood, I noticed the sound of ice crystals falling to the forest floor and shattering. The sound was constant and gusts of wind caused larger crystals to fall. 

As soon as I became aware of this subtle sound, I knew I had to record it. Because I didn't know how much battery life I would get in the frigid temps (15°F), I waited until 11pm to setup my recording gear. I did this to maximize my chance at a noise-pollution-free recording hoping that most people would be asleep.

To setup the recording I wanted to bungee cord my binaural microphone to a tree, but it was too difficult and too cold to have the patience necessary to get it right. Instead, I simply put the microphone on top of a snow bank facing the forest and the D100 in a dry bag next to it.

I was shocked to find the D100 still recording when I returned at 7:26am.

In total, I recorded for 8hr 22min and ended up with 23min of usable audio (≈4.6%). In post-production, I added a lo-cut filter at 180Hz, 12dB/octave to remove some low-frequency wind rumbling, and increased the loudness slightly to -30LKFS.
