We have the elusive Steve Murphy (@Stevemurphyridesagain) on our first mix of the series on Los Angeles', VPN Radio.

Steve Murphy takes us on a full journey through his vinyl collection. Yes, it's a full vinyl mix. 

Despite his artist name and his trademark sound, Steve Murphy does not come
from Chicago, but from Mira, a little town on the suburban area of Venice.
Steve has been djing since 2001, and in the past years has been rocking almost every club in his region. He is serious and professional behind the decks: playing only with vinyl, he blends electro and house, techno and new wave, acid madness and pop appeal.
Steve has produced together with Die Roh an album ("The Chasm") and one e.p
("Windy City") on Chiwax, and a solo 10" ("Planet Earth") on Rawax; these records
have been quickly gone out of stock and has been acclaimed by the lovers of the
classic Warehouse sounds.

In 2012 he has started the Riviera project and has founded the Muscle Records
label, together with Lucretio, Dj Octopus, Caio, Madì Grein and Chevel. The label is a
facility to spread what has been called "the sound of Brenta": a raw, nasty, machines
powered clash of house and techno.

In 2012 he also released "The Dove Ultimatum" on Vae Victis Records, under the
moniker of Durant: an unfriendly 12" of distorted electro and funky acid beats produced
with Die Roh and Lucretio.

Someone left a beer bottle on a bench near the playground. A girl in an oversized crumpled T-shirt is meditatively smoking in the window of one of the buildings. Soon she will extinguish the cigarette on the windowsill, throw it into the flowerbed and disappear into the blackness of the window opening. And you will remain in the same place. Because you are a car covered with a thick layer of pollen, whose owner slammed the door and disappeared without a trace on the same hot night ten or even twenty years ago. With the emergence of the Rawax stable of artists and subsequent sublabels emerged in August 2011, there had been a real momentum on the whole towards a more pure, analogue, vinyl-only aesthetic, and helmed by DBH distribution the releases came thick and fast.

One such artist, on the Chicago-referencing Chiwax, was Steve Murphy & Co - actually a collective of artists around the core of Steve Murphy, including Die Roh - and the raw, thumping Windy City EP he conjured for the sublabel's first release is simply stunning. Drawing on grit and distortion from old hardware and vinyl samples, the tracks physical effervesce with a real warmth and honesty that seems to have been missing from house music for nearly an age.

Eli Cash creates a transient approach to the 9th episode that is parallel to his life and for many. From moving coast to coast, the experience of seeing the transitioning landscapes, shifting scenery and altering moods is appropriated in the form of a mix. Now stationed in Los Angeles, Eli Cash brings forth an extensive mix featuring ambient to lo-fi, raw house. Unconventional yet refined.... civilized and polished with some dancefloor heaters sprinkled in between.

Analog Advisory Radio 009: Eli Cash

Producer and inimitable DJ, Grant first caught our eye via his first encounter with the ever abundant and eternally flavoursome, Lobster Theremin with his hugely well revered release 'Cranks' on their sub-label, Mörk. Catching the peepers of just about every aggregator around and receiving plaudits a-plenty, he soon followed up with, 'No Lights' on mainstay, LT's 36th offering. Ironically, this record acted as a light of sorts; at a time when the sonisphere was awash with saturation for saturations sake and rehashed YouTube ripped R&B samples, Grant's refreshingly uplifting and punchy production style shone through. Ever since, we've kept a firm eye on the frenchman's movements and are now supremely privileged enough to host an hour long sonic journey from the man.

https://soundcloud.com/Grant-la-1 takes the Four Heads mix machine for a lovely countryside sojourn. We take in all the scenery; a babbling brook, a hill over yonder, wildlife is all around, life is good. Grant's signature stripped back, delicately intricate sunny house-y sound is a real treat when taking in the scenery, he’s tender, caring and knowledgeable behind the controls - which bodes well for the trip, and also for the FH mix machine of course, who hasn’t been treated with this care and supervision for some time.

For more equally tasty, yet bite-sized consumables of Grant’s, hi alter ego production duo, the theory of movement releases a new EP tomorrow. You should check out the warm deep house cuts, sharpish.
