Soul Funk Forever (Vol.18)

When it comes to Disco-infused music, Nottingham-based producer Lanowa hits the spot! With a string of well-crafted productions released on the respected French label Citizens of Vice, his work has been backed up by important artists such as Dream Chimney, Ashley Beedle, Pete Herbert, PBR Streetgang, and Fred Everything.

Utilising soulful vocal samples, live instruments, and low-slung beats, Lanowa has crafted four beautiful original cuts for his forthcoming release that will only further enhance his growing reputation for creating music that brings a smile to your face and your feet to the dance floor.

“Thrill Me” is that kind of release that needs a cold drink to be slowly sipped while you appreciate the sophisticated sonority of the EP. What about a mojito? The traditional Cuban highball would be more than ideal to pair with Lanowa’s “Mojito”, whose recipe contains beautiful vocals, a stunning saxophone layer, a mellow piano lead, and a smooth synth pad as main ingredients. It’s simply delicious!

A personal tip for an impeccable mojito: Forget Bacardi and Havana Club. Go for Mount Gay Eclipse Silver Rum.

Once again Riotvan is revolving. In charge of the latest sound ventilation on the label: Markus Gebauer aka New World. Leipzig connoisseurs will already have cherished his earlier works under the moniker Boytalk, but here he astounds with an EP that should be able to light up the new disco sky with his neon white new name. That very EP is called Night Stalker and comes with a feature by beautiful Jennifer Touch who is singing on two tracks of it. The package is rounded off with an amazing remix by Lauer.

The EP comes as a 12-inch vinyl, is limited to 300 copies and will be released on September 13th 2013.

It can be difficult to mend a broken soul. It can be a struggle to forget. The memories of winter days past still glimmered faintly in his mind, a flickering dream which he struggled to recall in perfect clarity. He longed to be able to remember her face as she stared back from the path up ahead. He remembered the beautiful glow in a smile, in a wink, in a kiss. Most of all he did not want to forget the time in which they spent. He did not want to forget about her, he did not want to forget about you.

Based amidst the sprawl of East London you might upon an evening stumble into a party run by Let's Go Swimming. In recent months they have hosted the likes of Sotofett, Big Miz, Bell Towers and more. However, the formation of their own record label has since seen their relevancy increase dramatically. Doppelate is the latest artist to release on the label and he brings with him an expertly crafted blend of padded house, dreamy percussion and playful melody.

There is a lot of confusion with regards to the modern soul scene. An off-shoot of northern soul, it initially mixed new release independent soul, with post late-60s soul that didn’t fit with the northern scene. They championed a lot of great records, but this was the mid-80s and it now seems odd to describe nearly 50 year old records as modern soul – but somehow the name has stuck. Extra Added Soul luxuriates in this contradiction, as it allows us to mix up the boogie like ‘Love Explosion’ by Donnell Pittman, with two-step Chicago classics by Elvin Bishop or El Anthony, or the danceable sweet soul of Dyson’s Faces with Gil Scott-Heron alike ‘Patience’ by Rokk. Amongst the twenty tracks there is also room for a touch of Prince on 94 East’s exceptional ‘If You See Me’ and the cosmic soul of Karriem’s super rarity ‘I Love You

On the 14th October 2016 J&D Records release three exceptional compilations that look at vintage African-American music through the prism of UK club culture. All Night Long, Can You Feel ThatBeat and Extra Added Soul will be available on CD & double vinyl and are compiled by DJ and award winning compiler Dean Rudland, with stunning artwork from his long-time collaborators The Unknown. Northern soul boy, crate digger and tastemaker, Keb Darge is a name which needs no introduction to lovers of rare music the world over. His ‘Legendary Deep Funk’ night at Soho’s seminal strip club turned music venue Madame Jojo’s introduced obscure dance-floor soul music to an eager London club crowd, sparking a global appetite for raw, visceral funk.
Keb’s search for rare ‘45s took him across the globe, obsessively searching dollar bins, private collections and in some cases, artists homes to discover hidden gems recorded by local bands on regional record labels and pressed in tiny quantities. The rarity of the music combined with Keb’s exquisite ear and DJ ability meant that these records quickly became highly collectible (not to mention expensive) and even made ‘deep funk’ a recognized genre all its own. Keb’s passion paved the way for the modern funk revival, spearheaded by bands like The New Mastersounds & Quantic, even hitting the pop charts with the likes of Mark Ronson.
In 1997 BBE released the first of three compilation albums of ‘Legendary Deep Funk ’, among the first LPs issued by the label. Equally loved by fans and loathed by vinyl price-gougers, the music contained on these albums took the world by storm, offering a refreshing change from the same old well-loved funk tunes endlessly re-issued on cut-price comps. The music felt fresh, exciting, full of energy and more authentic than anything all but the most dedicated collectors had heard before.
Fittingly enough, to celebrate BBE’s 20th year, we’ve asked Keb to select his greatest hits from the ‘Deep Funk’ series, presented on heavyweight vinyl, CD and digital formats. The compilation contains edits by Keb’s deep funk contemporaries Ian Wright & Kenny Dope, as well as standout tracks from over 20 years of ‘Legendary Deep Funk’.
