Ecstatic Fanfare (symphony orchestra)

Aloft evokes the relentless pursuit of powered flight by the Wright Brothers at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, as well as the broader sense of persistence and elation during any creative act.

Aloft is meant to be truly accessible to a very wide range of musicians, conforming to the North Carolina Bandmasters Association MPA grade 2 guidelines, and thus playable by young and inexperienced musicians everywhere.

I am grateful to Danny Green, the Wachovia Winds Youth Wind Ensemble, and all the members of the consortium for creating this unique project for so many North Carolina composers. Special thanks to Philip Riggs for additional consultation on making the work’s technical demands accessible to young musicians.

Nothing Gold Can Stay (saxophone ensemble) MSU premiere

An adaption of the tango movement from The Treachery of Sounds, originally for Pierrot+ and electronics for the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble. This new version removes the electronics and expands the ensemble to a chamber orchestra. Premiered April, 2025, by Marc Sosnowchik and the University of Texas New Music Ensemble, Austin, TX.

The Lovers (UT New Music Ensemble world premiere)

Prelude and Fugato from Mama Dee’s Notebook is a tribute to my grandmother, an extraordinary woman. Born the thirteenth child to a coal miner in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, she lived through the full force of the Great Depression. Despite the hardships of her upbringing, she earned multiple college degrees, her first being in music.
During the pandemic, as I sorted through some of her belongings, I discovered her harmony notebook from the spring of 1938. It was filled with routine theory exercises, but at the back were several short sketches, only a few measures long, labeled "atonal, March 1938." In those fragments, I glimpsed the workings of a fascinating musical mind. They reminded me of the times I’d heard her improvising organ preludes for her congregation— moments of pure, spontaneous creativity.

Inspired by those sketches, I crafted this Prelude and Fugato. The work draws from her ideas and evokes the rich, resonant sounds of a pipe organ, the kind that fills the space of a large church. As you listen, I hope you hear echoes of the music my Mama Dee might have composed had she pursued the life of a composer. 
Commissioned by World-Wide Concurrent Premieres and Commissioning Fund, Inc. this work is dedicated to Dr. Matthew McInturf.

The Lone Star Wind Orchestra was founded in April 2006 by Robert Clark, Barry Knezek, and Christopher Tucker. The driving force behind forming this performing ensemble was the collective agreement between the founders to build the orchestra from a player’s perspective and be a vital participant in the North Texas arts community. The founders were in agreement that the focus of the group and the organization needed to embrace the core values of making the best possible music with an emphasis on giving back to the community and reaching out to the underserved.

The LSWO performs classical transcriptions, chamber music, and contemporary wind band literature in some of the finest performance halls available, primarily the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, the Charles W. Eisemann Center, and the new Dallas City Performance Hall. The Lone Star Wind Orchestra is proud to nurture musical growth through its guest artists and conductors, as well as support the expansion of the wind band repertoire through commissioning new works.

Among the organization’s many achievements, the Lone Star Wind Orchestra has initiated the “Band Rewards” program which gives local music programs an opportunity to raise funds for their programs through ticket sales, expanded the organization’s successful “Lone Star Kids” program providing a concert experience to Title-I music programs, and presented twelve “Music Changing Lives” scholarships to deserving high school seniors. The Lone Star Wind
Orchestra has recorded and released two professional CDs, "American Tapestry" in April 2008 and "Converging Cultures" in February 2011, which are distributed nationally by the Naxos record label under the Wind Band Classics series. The LSWO has also commissioned new works for wind band by composers Donald Grantham and Cindy McTee. In the summer of 2008, the Lone Star Wind Orchestra appointed Eugene Migliaro Corporon as the organization’s first Music Director and Conductor. The Lone Star Wind Orchestra has performed twice (2008, 2010) at the Texas Bandmasters Association convention in San Antonio, TX and the 2012 Arkansas Bandmasters Association convention in Fort Smith, AR. 

These accomplishments are in addition to the numerous programs performed for free to community outreach groups and organizations. The Lone Star Wind Orchestra has partnered with outreach organizations such as Artreach and The Senior Source to provide over 5,000 free performance tickets to the artistically underserved in North Texas.

The Lone Star Wind Orchestra strives to embody “Music Changing Lives” to audiences and as a role model for young students, encouraging the pursuit of music involvement as a life-long
passion.
