Seabuckthorn - Hand In The Upward Sky

I wrote this prior to the ‘slow fire’ tour of ’95. performed it nightly. I began recording a fully arranged version for ‘dead bees..’ but it was lost in a computer crash. yuka found this demo on cassette. it’s certainly of its time. as far as i can tell, i’d just completed the writing and recorded this(very)rough take for reference.

This is the stereo version of the quadraphonic sound installation created on Peter Fellin's sculpture "Die Goettliche Belastung", in view at the Franzenfeste Museum between May 4th and Nov 21st, 2023.

The original installation was allowing a unique spatial experience, each instrument being played via a single specific speaker placed at the top of Fellin's sculpture, over 3 meters high. 
The position of the speakers, the volume of the room, the resonance of the large and deep wooden artwork and the relation with the shape of the walls were producing a unique acoustic and physical experience which is impossible to reproduce on a traditional speaker setup, let alone via a simple stereo solution. 
The translation from quadraphonic to stereo mix was produced by recreating the acoustic response of the room and approximating the tridimensional experience offered by moving across the location.

Correspondence is the recording project of Ben Catt, an electronic musician and library worker based in Yorkshire. He previously played guitar in the Leeds noise-pop group Molars (2014-2016) and has recorded solo work extensively under various names for over ten years. Wave Recital is his first full album release following several ‘work in progress’ EPs and cassettes shared via Bandcamp.

Combining MIDI instrumentation, live percussion and field recordings, Wave Recital explores a variety of textures and dynamics over eight instrumental tracks. Each piece is written using a different process-based method (indebted to Steve Reich’s early essays), for example the increasing duration of electric piano and harp notes throughout ‘On Again’ and the gradual unveiling of a three-part marimba phrase on ‘Expanding Cycle’. This carefully structured approach to composition is countered by occasional flashes of noise and unpredictability, exemplified on the album’s lead track ‘Playing Field’ (contained within the confines of the short duration pop song form). Key influences on the sound of Wave Recital include Arthur Russell, Laurie Spiegel, Satoshi Ashikawa, He Can Jog (Audiobulb Records) and Julius Eastman.

A late-stage rehearsal straight to cassette for reference. Recorded shortly before going into the studio, probably at John Henry rehearsal rooms. This is Mark on guitar, Lee on drums, and myself on piano and organ (the bass was always addressed in the studio once the basic track was down, which is why it doesn't feature here).
