Las Mar presents us with hyper drumming, washy synths and sharp percussion in his new track Art of Living. As unpredictable as it is rewarding, Art of Living twists through instrumental sections building to a vocal climax. Rich harmonies match the enigmatic lyrics delivered via a warm yet playful voice. Pumping with a Tortoise-meets-Aphex Twin intensity, Art of Living is a strong introduction to Las Mar’s forthcoming debut album, Euphemist. 

Due for release October 2015, the debut album Euphemist was constructed over the course of a year in a bedroom studio using borrowed instruments and equipment. Funneling world music, post rock, electronic and psychedelic influences into one place, Las Mar creates tightly composed, multi-layered tracks. Mixed with Nic Lam (DX Heaven), Lachlan Wooden (Eddie Current Suppression Ring) and Paul Bender (Hiatus Kaiyote), Euphemist is playful, experimental, funky and otherworldly.

Born in Melbourne, Australia, Nick Martyn (Las Mar) has formally studied jazz, world music, production and songwriting, becoming a pro drummer at age 18. Having toured the world, he’s worked with artists as diverse as Clairy Browne & The Bangin’ Rackettes, Husky, Gotye and Daniel Merriweather. In 2014, deciding to focus more on his original voice, he produced the Luddite EP, exploring a range of creative ideas. With influences like Battles, Cornelius, Tortoise and Son Lux, Las Mar blurs the line between band and solo artist, beat maker and songwriter.

Art Of Living

Hooky and pretty, In A Rush is classic-meets-oddball guitar-pop derived from the likes of Wilco, David Bowie or Crowded House. Las Mar gives us a breezy summer track, the slight melancholy offset by a driving beat. After a ton of genre experimentation and hyper antics, Las Mar’s debut LP Euphemist concludes with a straight-up, lush pop song, a calming close to a record that defies genre expectations.
