Barra Funda is something of a homecoming for Brazilian producer Spaniol. The EP takes inspiration from the neighbourhood (barra funda) in São Paulo where Spaniol (Felipe Torquato) grew up as a kid and rediscovered when coming back from a long year touring around the world. 

The music is inspired by Felipe’s walks down the streets of the neighbourhood, originally known for its community of Spanish immigrants, going to the local park, Agua Branca, or visiting the neighbourhood’s numerous strange bars.

Opener Moinho is the name of a favela in Barra Funda where, over the past year there have been increasing confrontations between the local community and the police. In February 2017 Felipe met a young kid called Everson while working on the soundtrack for a public theatre piece. The two bonded over their love of rap and poetry and the result is this heady mix of baile funk, deep-dark, organic electronica and Everson’s gravely rap verses.

The EP closes with epic instrumental Asturias, which features guitars played by Felipe (one of the first real pieces he learnt) and is a homage to the producer’s own Spanish heritage.

Agua Branca takes its name, and its inspiration, from a park just two blocks down from where Felipe lives and where he used to play as a kid. Today it has been transformed with an incredible café and has become a nature reserve.

Sale de Baile featuring Tugce & Cosmic e Damiao is a nod to the old-style saloons.

Lavradio is the name of Felipe’s street in Barra Funda and was written alongside Agustin (Barrio Lindo) when he stayed at Spaniol’s place. Agustín was one of Felipe’s first contacts in the scene and the two have built up a close relationship over the years.

Historia:

Cierto día (que ya olvidé cual era), a cierta hora (que ya olvidé cual era) la vi por primera vez. Cabello corto (muy corto), ojos profundos, semblante de tranquilidad. Miraba el móvil afuera de un salón de preparatoria. Me puse a un lado de ella. Me miró con aquellos ojos que penetran el alma y me dijo su nombre: Aquel que jamás podré olvidar. Recuerdo (aunque no quiera) cada letra, cada modo, cada tono que conforma el conjuro que supone su nombre. 

La Maga representa todo aquello que quieres, pero que no puedes tener. 

En menos de seis meses tomó una carretera que la llevó a kilómetros de mí. Un día me desperté de aquel sueño y solo quedaban vestigios de una mujer que parecía nunca haber existido, le seguí el rastro hasta aquella ciudad interminable, aquel Leon furioso y hambriento que reclamaba nuestros cuerpos. La seguí dos veces solo darme cuenta que nada valía la pena.

Recuerdo, solo fragmentos, tu cabello volando con el viento, tu sonrisa espontánea. A lo lejos, aquella ciudad sumergida en la melancolía…

Nunca serás más Maga que aquel atardecer en dónde mirábamos la TV, consumidos por el silencio de lo irremediable. A veces te pienso, y todo se vuelve oscuro, como si se tratase de un conjuro mágico.

Jamás serás más Maga que aquel día que te vi entrar al club y por fin entendí el mandamiento: “Santificaras las fiestas”

Recuerdo… solo fragmentos… de aquella noche oscura… nunca serás más Maga que cuando desapareciste sin dejar rastro alguno, y en mi cabeza, solo el vago rumor de una mujer de piel morena…

A year after the success of the first Princes Of Abzu أبزو موالي release, mystical Lyon based imprint @HardFist comes back with a superb second volume that is once again dedicated to Arabic cultures.

Like the first compilation, Vol. 2 gathers a strong cast of international artists from Russia, France, Turkey, Germany, Japan and Israel. All are united by a common passion for Middle- Eastern and North African sounds and are fascinated by the deep psychedelic effects of the melodies and the transcendental power of the rhythms. Trying to build cultural bridges across the world, powering connections between dance floor activists, Hard Fist thinks of Princes Of Abzu not only as a compilation but as a tool to give space for expression to local legends like Kaan Duzarat in Istanbul, or upcoming artists such as Linja or @DJ-Feller who debut here on wax.

The latter closes the EP with ‘Strange Night for Hassan’, a track built on a Darbuka solo played by the percussionist Nadav Dgon and deconstructed by the producer. Supported by strong kicks and rising acid lines, this cut is definitely the most intense of the lot.

Princes Of Abzu is a hedonist movement that cares more about vibes and feelings than borders and nationalities and that is perfectly represented here again with this second offering in the series.

Weaving in and out of a variety of different genres while maintaining a constant upbeat and progressive groove and chucking in a few unexpected gems is what attracted us while listening to Paboona behind the decks. This will definitely warm you up inside and out despite the cold winter weather. Always bubbly and full of smiles she will get you moving on the dance floor and you can catch her at most underground events happening in and around Amsterdam and will be putting out some dope sounds at events such as Fusion or even Garbicz Festival to name a few.

To conclude 2019 in style we have the wicked Kokkey in charge of the sunset decks to treat us with a super groovy electro disco mix tape. He is a great story teller through his selection of tracks and for the next hour he has provided us with an uplifting set full of disco and electro influences. Quality transitions and an ease to switch between tracks while ensuring there is a flow and coherence to his musical journey. 

Hailing from Istanbul it is without doubt that Kokkey has a wide palette of world wide influences and different genres of music which is exactly what we love. It is all about appreciating different styles and discovering little gems that need the time to be unearthed. This week I'm happy to introduce you a talented artist https://soundcloud.com/ysmathegos from France for a another amazing MultiCultural Journey.

Ysmathegos, under different nicks, has always been immersed in music. Musician in groups of punk rock and metal then singer of reggae roots and rap through everything there is between. Ysmathegose plunges only late into electro music with a passion for the down that will inevitably lead him to Mix 2 years ago. After training debut on Virtual DJ, he quickly went under Serato where he will make his weapons and his first live at his friends and then in bars. In July 2018 he made his first private live show with the electro mix "Nothing's Real" where he had his first big hit. Today he mixes under rekordbox and often participates in other private parties where he presents atypical DJs and hopes to participate in more events to reach a wider audience and share his vision with a community always bigger and bigger...

Today we celebrate the first anniversary of our podcast with a magical set by Malü. 

We enjoyed this year so much with you and are very grateful for everyone being part of it! 

We met Malü during this year, as a nice DJ and even better producer and most importantly as a kind soul and good friend. He describes his music himself as deep, emotional and slow music. As you all know, we like this kind a lot ;-) 

While his sets are just right on point, his productions take you on a deep trip through complex musical spheres. This makes us even more proud to be the label for his first release coming later this year!
