This piece was inspired by the 'cacerolazos', a demonstration accompanied by the clattering of saucepans in protest against Argentina’s economic and political situation that culminated in December 2001. The words are from the poem 'Oración de un desocupado (Prayer of the Unemployed)' by Argentinian poet Juan Gelman.

For Soprano, Flute, Percussion and Multimedia. The revised version of this piece was premiered on October 11, 2012 at the 'Celebrate with Soundstreams' concert at Koerner Hall in Toronto (Canada).

Defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as “a short ceremonious sounding of trumpets, an elaborate welcome,” the fanfare is a form understood by all. The Toronto Fanfare Project, a series of eclectic concerts presented as part of the 2006 soundaXis festival of music and architecture, offered an elaborate five-day welcome to this rich literature for brass ensemble, animating some of the great architectural and acoustical masterpieces in the core of Toronto with a celebration of the music of Canada and its northern neighbours. 

Thirteen new fanfares, in both jazz and classical genres, were commissioned for the occasion from Canadian and Scandinavian composers: Chris Paul Harman, John MacLeod, Gary Kulesha, Ray Luedeke, Alexina Louie, Kelly Marie Murphy, and Andrew Staniland of Canada; Tryggvi Baldvinsson of Iceland; Fuzzy and Jens Winther of Denmark; Anders Hillborg of Sweden; Kirmo Lintinen of Finland; and Rolf Wallin of Norway.

This work was premiered on June 04, 2006 at the 'Toronto Fanfare Project' presented by Soundstreams in Toronto (Canada).

In composing these eleven short pieces, Somers has declared that he deliberately set out to put the performer’s technique to the test by exploring the entire gamut of the oboe’s range. However mischievous his initial intent might have been, however, the resulting pieces nonetheless add up to a coherent and delightful whole—and one that places no less strenuous demands on the pianist. 

Instrumentation: For oboe and piano.
