In The Mix with Johnny Blackouts (Adam Warped)

HIDDEN SHADOWS #24 I was asked the other day to do a warm up set for Ziggy Marley and his band playing in Norway later this week. So for this Months Hidden Shadow I wanted to explore some of the records that have been luring around my bag for a while, looked for an opportunity to jump on the syncopated soul train. Before digging deep into minimal dubscapes from around the 44 minute mark, and a series of drum'n'bass classics and newbies (kickstarted by a rare 1999 Frédéric Galliano 10" from from around 1:05:30), let's establish a foundation of laid back, soulful reggae. Free assosiative eclectic mix, mostly on vinyl. Hope you like it.

SoHaSo gives you five goodies from the Lowlands, to celebrate summer. Something old, something new, something for everyone.

First up is the b-side to the house classic everyone in the Benelux knows: Mary Go Wild. The flip to to this epic club single from 1996 is a stripped down and rather moody groove affair. "It's gonna be allright", Fung-Kee sings over some melancholic strings. Indeed it did.

New material comes from label boss Nuno dos Santos, who makes us look in the mirror of the past. That time when synths like the Alpha Juno ruled the radio waves. Straight up club music for all those cats who shed a tear over classic Ame-records.

Remy Unger from Den Haag is proper old school. Besides a very skilled dj, he's also an experienced producer, with releases on Belgian labels like Global Cuts and Wonka. Westkust brings us back to those days. Sun drenched, piano-driven housemusic with a great punch and beautiful strings.

Bushwalking by Belgium collective Mayuku has a bit of a similar vibe. With it's dubby baslines and echo-ing melodies it sure unlocks the same summer feelings.

Closer “Do We Have A Cosmic Connection” by Far Out Radio Systems is a lifted from his album from 2020. The sun has gone down but the pavement in the city still radiates the heat of the day. That kinda vibe.

Step by step, with devotion and intention, Maarten VX is building his own momentum. The rising Belgian electronic artist seamlessly blends the energy of the dancefloor with introspective electronica, connecting with listeners on a heartfelt level.

A series of genre-fluid EPs released between 2021 and 2024 caught the attention of StuBru, Radio 1, and Rinse FM, with praise from Focus Knack marking him as an artist to watch. Additionally he won the Cellini remix contest, hosted by Vi.be and Red Bull Elektropedia.

In his live performances, Maarten VX fuses concert-like storytelling with club energy. He has already made notable appearances at Ancienne Belgique’s Braindance XL, Campo Solar, Obscuur Festival, and other venues.

His 6th EP, Emotions Only We Know, is scheduled for May 16th.
