In this residency, I explore the rhythms and percussion of traditional music and its influence on contemporary music. It's like looking at the reflection of a spoon and seeing our world in reverse, taking a step back form the music I play, leading me to a different approach to music.

Today’s episode explores sacred drums and percussions from various traditions. We’ll listen to spiritual and meditative pieces featuring artists like Chinmaya Dunster (@chinmayadunster), Cyro Baptista (@cyrobaptista), Gabrielle Roth & The Mirrors (@gabrielleroth), Hearn Gadbois (@hearn-gadbois), OZO (@ozo-music), Carly Barton (@carl-420) and others who blend traditional percussion with contemporary expressions.

These artists inspire me with the vibrant energy of their music. I'm deeply passionate about the simplicity of their rhythms and the infectious groove that compels you to dance!

In this label special, we are focussing on releases from the Jazz and Rhythm ‘n’ Blues label Cadet Records. A sub-label of the independent label Chess Records from Chicago. Founded in the 1950s, Chess Records set the trend for the development of Rhythm and Blues and Rock ‘n’ Roll and is still one of the most important Blues labels today. The success of the label and its sub-labels is due to the fact that they signed musicians and released records that were not the focus of the major labels. They thus offered the artists a space for free musical development. Among the main protagonists who have released on Cadet Records are Ahmad Jamal, James Moody, Dorothy Ashby, Ramsey Lewis, Rotary Connection and many others.

This mix is a tribute to „Takeshi Terauchi“, the legendary Japanese guitarist known for his razor-sharp picking and surf rock-infused playing. It features his solo works and collaborations with f.e. „The Blue Jeans“, capturing the energy of 1960s eleki music. From fast-paced instrumentals to cinematic twangs, it celebrates Terauchi’s unique style of blending traditional melodies with Western surf, garage, and fuzz-drenched psychedelia.

"The piano chords at the beginning of the track sound familiar; the moment the memory begins to take shape, bizarre organ flashes shoot out of nowhere, completely off beat, shattering the concentration. Suddenly, the whole thing escalates, spiralling completely out of control; echoes circle around the speakers, only to return to relative normality under tight bongo rhythms before a stubborn trombone takes over. And then it gets really interesting."

The Endless Tape Machine #37 - Bubble It Up On Dub

First up in a new series of Music From Memory mixtapes is Austria based Giuseppe Leonardi (@giuseppe-leonardi) with this contribution suitably named Universal Choreography. Q&A here below.

MFM: Hi Giuseppe! So, first please could you tell a bit about your background and about how you got into making music?

GL: I grew up living in Vienna where my mother is from, and my father is from Bari, southern Italy, hence the name. My family has always been very musical and after my first experiences playing drums in a gospel church, I soon also started playing guitar in a punk rock band at age 14 with my Korean friend, who significantly opened my musical horizon. I consider myself an autodidact and besides having studied sound engineering, I taught myself to play drums, guitar, bass, keys and any other instruments I can get my hands on. This past year, besides playing as a dj, I´ve had my first live experiences and preparing for a live set for a festival this spring. So it´s an exciting transition time regarding my musical development. 

MFM: We think your sound is very unique, the sort of genre bending and transcending kind, made with a lot of feeling. What and who do you regard as your influences? And how would you describe the process of making your music, is there a specific kind of Giuseppe workflow or are there any favorite instruments you can't do without?

GL: Thanks. One person that immediately comes to mind in terms of who influenced me, not only musically, is Frank Zappa. He has inspired me a lot, with his way to surprise with the unexpected. I try to expose myself to different genres that cannot be weird enough in order to get fresh new ideas. I record at my home studio where I overdub all instruments using analog gear mostly from the 80s like the ’79 Pearl Syncussion drummachine and more recently the MAM vocoder built in Bavaria. I don’t have a specific workflow - Just drawing from inspiration, life and making sure I always eat my veggies.  

MFM: Do you remember how you came up with the ideas for writing the tracks that ended up on the Second Circle release? Would you say it has a typical Giuseppe Leonardi signature sound?

GL: The ambiant ones where recorded a few years ago while working on a job in Venice, where I had to boom operate interviews with some actors. In my spare time, I went to the sea using the equipment recording the waves of the ocean. Kannibalentanz and Orpheus were actually inspired by Maloya (music from La Reunion) and was created a few days before the final selection was defined. People often say that they can recognize a particular signature sound in my music, but its not my intention.
Its difficult for me to describe my music  but I was happy to see it being called: “heady and pleasingly melodious, that actually gets better with each successive listen.”... thanks Juno. 

MFM: So, thanks a lot for making the very first contribution to our new mix series! Maybe you could tell a bit more about the mix, what inspired you, how and where you recorded it, how you came to this selection? 

GL: I am of course excited to be the first to release a mix compilation and did spend some time putting it together. My musical influences and inspirations are very broad, which I tried to transmit. I consider my mix a collaboration with all the great people that I have gotten to know, learned from, and shared music with over the years. These include people like: dj Nomad, Julian Horn, Lauren Hansom, dj Sofa, Nu Guinea, Jan Schulte, Goldcut Crates, Phaserboys, Bayete, Sebastião de los Miedos, Tingel Tangel, Walter Daniel, Noel Dinse, Marie, of course the big god-papa, Mike Burns and many more. Ultimately, the tracks that I assembled, also reflect my own creations. I hope you enoy it!

E2E: Did your move to Melbourne influence the mix? 

A little bit, yes. I have been feeling particularly nostalgic lately and that probably came through in the selections. Last week, I drove from Glebe to Brunswick in a 12 seater bus with my cat Romeo. We listened to this mix together to see how it sounded on the road. Unfortunately, Romeo did not like it and he did not like much that day. 

E2E: Were there any environments or contexts that you had in mind when putting this mix together? 

As the title of your mix series suggests, music can be a wonderful accompaniment to activities. When I have watched a film that has really affected me I’ll often listen to the soundtrack for weeks after and sometimes make my own imaginary soundtrack of songs that fit with the world of the film. While I was reading Cormac McCarthy’s ‘Border Trilogy’, I wanted to find ways to stay in the novel when I wasn’t reading it. The novels are set at the southwest border of the United States and the characters spend a majority of the novels riding on horseback, often alone and usually on a quest to avenge a loss. I found myself preoccupied imagining the sort of music the characters and their horses could be listening to, riding under lonesome skies, contemplating their place in the world. 

I don’t expect that much of your audience owns or has access to a horse. Still, I hope some of them can enjoy these songs on journeys of their own. 

E2E: Any news or projects coming up with Best Effort, Ken Oath Records or Rimbombo?

Nothing is planned on the release front and my bank account implies that maybe it’s time for a bit of a break. Best Effort Dance Parties will continue every few months at Freda’s and I’m looking forward to some summer parties in Sydney with my Rimbombo buds Adi and James at the end of the year.
