In the second edition of our radio show 'The Endless Tape Machine', we look at the exceptional artist Airto Moreira, a genius on drums, percussion and his 120 other instruments. 

We mainly highlight the creative phase of the 70s with music by the following artists and bands:   
Antonio Carlos Jobim, Miles Davis, Weather Report, Steve Kuhn, Astrud Gilberto, Deodato, Chick Corea, Santana, Gato Barbieri, George Duke, Miroslav Vitous, Hermeto Pascoal, Al Di Meola, as well as pieces of his solo works and his wife Flora Purim. The sequence of songs is in chronological order.

From the great sky, she directed her mind to the great earth... She gazed trough the centuries-old stone blocks and waters of the world's oceans, the look of her eyes penetrated...Her heart yearned fro a place beyond the reach of mortals, a place where no one returns...

With a fierce determination she gathered the signs of dominion and justice, in her grasp, securing them with precious golden wrists and a jade sceptre...She donned the Crown of Eden upon her head, disguising herself to avoid recognition, and wrapped a turban around it to shield her from the winds...A shimmering lapis lazuli necklace adorned her neck, while two pearls in the form of water droplets rested upon her chest...She draped herself in a robe befitting a mistress and adorned her fingers with glittering gold rings...

As she gazed upon her reflection at the crystalline of the cosmos, She spoke words that resonated with purpose and intent:

- Today, I embark on a journey to a destination unknown...When I cross the threshold of infinity, let the the mournful strings of life and death play on the ruins of ancient civilisations...But know this - you can always find me by opening the doors of your heart...

With these words, she took the first steps towards a path known only to fate, and the mind questioned her intentions:

- "Where are you headed?"
- "I'm going to the East," she replied
“If you are going to the East, why are you on your way to a place of no return? Why let your heart guide you towards what seems like a ruse?"
- "I'm not heading towards my destination, but to find myself on this path...I'm not going to die, but to be reborn"

In the twilight of infinity enveloped her spirit, she ventured through the seven gates that sealed her fate...When she entered the first gate, the Crown of Eden fell from her head... When she entered the second gate, signs of dominion and justice crumbled to dust...When she entered at the third gate, the azure necklace became coal...When she entered the fourth gate, her turban became sand...When the gate entered the fifth, the golden wrists turned out to be snakes...When the sixth gate entered, those drops of the bead became rivers...When the gate entered the seventh, the robe of the lady fell from her shoulders...

She appeared naked before the light of the seven beings - the keepers of the gates...

- What will be your role in great scheme of things? They asked
- Will u you dare to become the arbiter of justice or will you fade into darkness, self-hatred and the emptiness of an unfulfilled life? 

With a thundering sound of seven voices, the guardians asked...

Can you not see how meager and lowly are the forces which drive them astray? Fear, doubt, sloth, temerity...Are any of these a worthy match for that which you strive to be?

They looked at her - it was the look of death...And they killed her by their decision and hung her body on the chains of ignorance...Darkness...

But as her body hung on the chains of ignorance, a bright light radiated from within her...The light grew brighter and brighter until it burst forth and shattered the chains that held her...

With a voice as strong as the thunder that had just spoken, she declared:

- I will not fade into darkness or despair! I will be the arbiter of justice, and I will fight against fear, doubt, sloth, and temerity...I will shine a light in the darkness and be a beacon of hope for those who are lost!

As she spoke, the seven judges bowed their heads in reverence. They had witnessed the transformation of a mortal into a goddess, a mere human into a divine being...And so, the lady of justice and truth, now reborn, descended from the gates and walked into the twilight of infinity...Her journey had come full circle, and she had emerged victorious...

The Endless Tape Machine #3 - Hot Barbecue

What REALLY happened to agent Dana Scully when she was abducted by aliens? This question haunted me for the longest time… I was secretly hoping X-Files big boss Chris Carter would take cues from David Lynch and create some sort of bizarre Black Lodge stream-of-consciousness episode about it. You know, a sci-fi take on dancing midgets, people talking backwards and malicious doppelgängers. Perhaps something along the lines of final sequence in "2001: A Space Odyssey"?!
 
Alas, Carter was less risk-taking than Lynch or Kubrick, so it never happened. I can’t make a TV episode, but I can imagine how it would have sounded. And here is the result. I’ll call it Agent Scully’s Abduction Hallucinations. A jumble of Mark Snow's X-Files cues mangled, reassembled, and fused with contemporary (and not so contemporary) electronica and percussion music.

This edition is dedicated to the island of Jamaica and the music played there from 1965 to 1975. When the island was hit by an enormous heat wave at the end of the 60s, legend has it that the fast ska beat developed into a more slow-going sound - rocksteady. What we all associate with the style reggae was to follow a little later. In this issue we play almost exclusively tunes from the defining sound systems and labels of this period - Prince Buster, Studio One / Coxsone & Treasure Isle.

This episode takes us to Latin America to the popular sound of cumbia. The traditional folk dance draws its origins from African rhythms that were established by colonial slaves in Colombia, later mixed with indigenous and Spanish elements from there and spread further. Our show travels from 1954 to 2019 through Colombia, Peru & Panama where this music is still popular today. Mainly represented, the label 'Discos Fuentes' the powerhouse of Colombian music, still highly sought after by record collectors today. Plus the legendary groups Los Mirlos & Los Destellos from Peru along with sunny highlights from Panama.
