Vangelis Kostoxenakis and Piem unveil Clarisse’s 60th outing that puts on an unofficial battle of the sexes in the pitching together of Athens and Barcelona. Far from being a dancefloor discriminator, the pair’s marriage of ‘Bros’ and ‘Ladies’ features unique vocal tics and bumpy bottom ends of contrasting, inescapable infectiousness.

Having also found success as Angel Stoxx and Phatjak to followers of Neon Music, Vangelis Kostoxenakis has galvanised the best of Greece’s night life before breaking out and grabbing the Snatch!, Glasgow Underground, KD Music and Kling Klong imprints by the scruff of the neck. Piem has risen from dominating Barcelona’s back yard in his teens to taking on the cream of Europe’s club scene, going on to divide up decks with Roger Sanchez, Xpress-2, Chus & Ceballos, Booka Shade and Danny Howells.

Lapping up a sunny atmosphere of brotherly love before cutting through the poolside pleasantries in a B-Boy stance, ‘Bros’ is a tough pumper with plenty of boom-boom-boom to it. While darting synths scurry atop and the vocal continues to throw you for a loop, the party gets hit head on with a cyber-sharpened bass sizing up a variety of dancefloors before slicing them wide open: one that puts the fizz into physical.

‘Ladies’ features dialogue from what sounds like ODB attempting stand-up. It presides over a breakdown pushing anticipation to an absolute maximum, joined by a rash of button-bashing vocal samples aimed at reaching good vibrations. Taking on the chit-chat is an acid-clean bassline both funky and friendlier than its macho counterpart, on a good old fashioned bit of rounded and ripe bump to give your hands some airtime.

Stepping away from his usual sound, Barato brings with him an old-school, energetic bounce to this ten track offering, inviting some top names to join him for the ride.

“Past Forward is about taking musical influences from my past coming up as a young DJ…and bringing them forward into my own sound. It’s been an incredible experience working on this album and to be releasing it on Hot Creations has given me the space and freedom to create something that is a departure from what I’m typically known for. The album begins with Over You. Swirling arpeggios dance around the pulsating beat, providing the perfect backdrop for the poppy, yet soulful vocals of Wayne Tennant . This leads neatly into A Sun’s Dream, which is exactly that – a warm, sunny track, pure party-time house produced alongside the French composers and afro-soul singers , Djeuhdjoah & Lieutenant Nicholson . Up next is Context featuring Lost BOUL. & NB76 – the aliases of Paolo Rocco and Nathan himself. It’s a techier affair with contrasting elements that take the track through a range of twists and turns. She’s A Rockstar, produced alongside fellow Canadian Room 303 , picks up the pace with its infectious rhythm and playful vocal hook.

On In Ya Soul Barato utilises a booty-house style bassline, enlisting Chicago’s Kid Enigma to provide the vocals. High Rez brings back the sunny vibes with a tantalising guitar hook and dreamy piano topline, juxtaposed against the deep, whirring bassline. The slow, yet assured drum beat of Bubbles is up next with its woozy bass and gentile percussion sending the listener on a trance-inducing journey into the cosmos. Don’t Say It features the smouldering vocals of Mikey V, layered over a throbbing beat that looks set to be one of Hot Creation’s summer anthems. Penultimate track Yo Yo has a sturdy bounce and effortlessly blends cowbells and suspenseful synths.
The album closes out with Crazy – a track that’s full to the brim of high energy with a marching bassline that’s sure to cause a commotion on dance-floors across the globe.

Nathan Barato has been a key figure in dance music for some time. His diverse sets have led to residencies at some of the industry’s hottest nights including Paradise and Elrow. He’s had a slew of hits on impressive imprints such as Hottrax, REKIDS, Relief and Saved Records. Following on from stellar Toolroom release Sneaky Girl in March, rising UK producer and DJ makes his debut on Solardo’s esteemed Sola label with two track belter Lady In Red EP. 

Lead EP track Lady In Red boast electric synth lines and soaring melodies combined with contagious vocal loops and samples making for the ultimate tech house heater. Meanwhile Groove You takes the EP to deeper territories with a grooving drum line and diva vocal weaved amongst 90’s influenced acid warps. 
Demonstrating versatile skill and ability to span multiple genre realms, Roger That’s Sola debut marks an exciting year ahead for the UK talent.   

Since emerging on the scene in 2015, Roger That has racked up a slew of impressive accolades including releases on Toolroom Cr2, Twisted Fusion and Audio Rehab whilst securing slots at Ministry of Sound, Egg London, Sankeys Ibiza, We Are FSTVL and Studio 338, playing for ADOBE on multiple occasions. Add to this heavy backing from the likes of Marco Carola, Detlef, Latmun, Sam Divine and of course the Solardo boys as well as a 2019 tour lined up and Roger That has is a definite one to watch in the months to come.
