Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima pulled double duty for the "Streets of Rage 3" soundtrack, and it shows. This extremely divisive soundtrack hit unprepared gamers and SOR fans like a 2x4 when it first released, but over the years, it has grown its appreciative fan base.

When I first began expanding and enhancing the "Streets of Rage" soundtracks, I was not particularly enthusiastic about tackling the third game. However, after biting the bullet, I came to enjoy the project immensely, and it's the one I'm most proud of. The sheer chaos of the soundtrack gave me room to either capitalize, or deviate from the source material in a way that, in my humble opinion, just works. 

My signature expansions are new additions to the songs in order to make them longer, and broader in scope. This is my take on what Koshiro and Kawashima would have done with more time, better hardware, and higher storage capacity. As always, EVERY song in the soundtrack has been painstakingly recreated from the ground up, note-for-note. NO sampling, NO rips, NO stems.

🔥FINAL CRASH UPDATE / Nov. 23/23🔥 - The FINAL CRASH edition of my Streets of Rage soundtracks is now complete, culminating with the third game in the franchise. This frantic, chaotic and psychotic mix of breakbeat, techno and hardcore originally came courtesy of sonic geniuses Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima. My job was to rewrite every song from scratch, note-for-note, and expand on the original songs, fleshing them out with entirely new sections. When I originally began this project years ago, I thought SOR3 would be my least-favorite soundtrack to work on. As it turns out, it was the most challenging, the most rewarding, and the one I'm most proud of. Please enjoy.

My newest series of big band video game arrangements launches with this classic from one of my favorite games, Chrono Trigger.

Chrono Trigger is known amongst game players as one of the most important and well beloved video games of all time. In addition, its score is frequently cited as one of the all time greats. With its lush harmonies, non functional progressions and fusion straight 8th grooves I realized that all the time I spent playing this game as a child was affecting my musical approach as I entered college. So when I decided to arrange this piece two years ago, the meeting was natural and fluid.

Throughout the arrangement you will hear the top tier clarinet playing of Brett McDonald, as the featured soloist. In addition, Brett, Drew and Kelsey provide a vast array of woodwind colors such as bass clarinet, alto flute, and bass flute! The brass play remarkably well, with many exposed and delicate muted passages. The rhythm section is groovin' throughout and I just love how they play during the solo section. I think you will too.

🔥FINAL CRASH UPDATE / Nov. 23/23🔥 - "Fuze" was the first song in SOR3 that signified a dramatic departure from the first two games. This soundtrack would be hardcore, and Motohiro Kawashima brought the goods. For this song, I wanted to build an expansion onto it that felt completely natural and logical, and I wanted the listener to miss the transition entirely. The objective? To create a sense that this is the definitive fleshed out version of the song. It's my take, and I hope Kawashima-san enjoys it, if he ever listens to it.

Fuze (Expanded & Enhanced) - STREETS OF RAGE 3

🔥FINAL CRASH UPDATE / Nov. 23/23🔥 - When developing the music for Streets of Rage 3, a technique was used to artificially create randomized sequences that could not otherwise be dreamt up by the human mind.  Cycle I is a perfect example of the chaotic heavy industrial techno approach the game took, and it was a challenge to flesh this one out. Less turned out to be more, as any significant deviation would have ruined the track altogether. Great job by Motohiro Kawashima on the original composition.

Cycle I (Expanded & Enhanced) - STREETS OF RAGE 3

🔥FINAL CRASH UPDATE / Nov. 23/23🔥 - This is one of the more accessible and traditional tracks in the Streets of Rage 3 soundtrack, but it's still a gritty number that required a "less is more" approach.  I've written a brand new middle section with a more kinetic pace, and a few surprises designed to maintain the authenticity of this song, without changing too much. Happy with how it turned out.

The Poets II (Expanded & Enhanced) - STREETS OF RAGE 3

🔥FINAL CRASH UPDATE / Nov. 23/23🔥 - Dub Slash is a menacing track with a lot of abstract notes and alarming twists, so this expanded version is meant to build on that, while bringing a brief period of cohesion to the song, before it all "falls apart" again.  This was a fun track to do, and I'm happy to have cleaned it up more for the last edition.
