Slowly Episode #16 - DANE

Friend began his journey as a music journalist in 2010 founding @psymedia before taking up DJing 2017. In 2018 he moved from South Africa to Vietnam and quickly established himself as a formidable DJ and promoter in the region. From sandy beaches down south to mystical caves up north, Friend played at many reputable clubs, festivals and tropical jungle raves such as Studio Adventure, Savage, Retreat (Equation), We Groove and Equinox Festival. His creatively curated 'This Is' club nights and prolific sunrise afterparties in Hanoi under his humble record label @magicboxengine also played a pivotal role in shaping the city's underground music scene.

Since returning to Cape Town in 2021, Friend has performed at renowned festivals and prolific venues such as Wolfkop Weekender, Bazique, Habitat, Into The Wild, Afrikaburn, Origin Festival and Modular Club. Often eclectic, sometimes obscure, always tasteful - Friend's forever evolving sound is heavily influenced by his nomadic travels in SE Asia, South America and Europe. Never shy to switch up the genre or tempo, his versatile approach sees him blending elements of ambient, house, minimal, techno, electro and breakbeats spanning both new school and old.

After getting hold of his mums record player as a kid Alan started to buy vinyl in the late 80's and got his first set of belt driven turntables at 15 and started learning to mix House music and early Rave and Hardcore records. Fast forward a few years and a set of Technics 1200 decks Alan was playing Techno at free parties around Essex, Cambridgeshire and London and was quickly a regular on the London club circuit playing alongside Techno legends Ben Sims, Colin Dale, Mark Williams, DJ Bone, Mark Broom, Inigo Kennedy, Terry Mitchell & many more. 

In the late 90's Alan had a regular slot on one of the first internet radio stations "Interface" which in turn led to him founding his own London based "Frequency Radio" which was an outlet for all things underground and electronic focusing heavy on Electro music. In 2006 Alan moved to Vietnam and Cambodia throwing parties and dropping beats in Nha Trang, Phnom Penh & Saigon under his Soul Jazz Funksters Alias and his own name for all things electronic. Heavy influences from Detroit Techno define his sound and a DJ that is happy warming up the floor or keeping the groove flowing with that all important Soul & Funk ingrained in the beats. Currently based in Nha Trang, Vietnam, and drops beats @ Vitamin D, Luu Bar, Le Café des Stagiaires, Racha Rooms, P'ti Saigon, Dram Bar, Sunshine Bar & other top venues in SE Asia.
