Formed in 2005, Nemesis Recordings was founded on a love of jungle and drum & bass music. Label head honcho Silver brought together the very best sounds which had influenced him throughout his DJing career and fed this into a seminal imprint, one which would serve as a platform for his own musical output. Boasting over 30 releases on the label, it’s played host to an array of key artists and top producers, from Skream to Dubphizix, dipping into every genre that’s available across contemporary dance music. And they’re not about to stop anytime soon; North Base are here to make up an offering to Nemesis, returning to its roots for a no holds barred approach which cuts you deep from start to finish.

North Base themselves are an award winning production outfit, who’ve delivered remixes for some of the biggest names within the music industry, whether that’s Craig David & Example. Their standalone releases have also featured heavily in the sets of Andy C and Mistajam, receiving support from every corner of the musical spectrum. It’s not surprise then, that on first listen this single is undeniably big. But when you break down the tracks individually, their even more impressive.

Up first is ‘Planet X’ which ramps up on elevating synth and stabbing pads, growing layer on layer until they’re bursting at the seams. You’re then thrown into absolute chaos, with drum skits taking you from each segment on top of a bassline that swells with power. Zipping and turning between its carefully strung out drops, North Base commands your full attention through the track’s entirety. A certified dancefloor destroyer, if you’re looking for a livener you’ve found the right record.

‘Get Away’ on the other hand points to a totally different direction. Taking you down to a lower frequency but with a mix that’s still heavy and oozing with production prowess, this is North Base at their most creeping. Still keeping their menacing air, you’ll instantly recognize ‘Get Away’ if you’ve caught the guys this year at a few of the World’s major festivals, whether that’s Tomorrowland or Creamfields. That’s why North Base are so huge, because they detonate these types of sonic assaults on crowds of thousands.

Broken Mirror

Climbing slowly and gently out of the capsule, stepping out into a strange and unknown world. Carefully leading the foot to the bottom. A short twitch went through the body as it stepped on the unexpectedly cool steel plates. The weakened body slid limply and powerless out of the capsule.
Searching in an eternal darkness. Only interrupted by the red light cone of a warning light, which wandered evenly and in a perpetual correlation to the crying out of the alarm through the room.
The cone of fire of the warning light showed a picture of destruction. It felt as if the heartbeat would stop for a second. The soot colored the room black, shadowy outlines and deformed shapes, which were also covered with the pitch-black soot, created a frightening scenery. Pictures of memory flared up as they crossed the scene and lay like a veil on the soot-blackened backdrop. The contrast between these two realities could not be more frightening. As if you were looking at the world through a broken mirror.

Although the name Burr Oak is one which has only just started to become acquainted with the drum & bass genre, the faces behind the outfit have already made their mark over its last formative years. A new venture between The Clamps and Opsen (known for making up one part of the Signs project) their first release through the Trendkill platform sent shockwaves throughout the wider dance music scene. ‘Time Has Come’ and ‘Originate’ were selected by label owner and pivotal figure Prolix, setting a standard for the pair which they’ve followed with their forthcoming single. 

Burr Oak shown that they’re no strangers to high production standards and an enviable work rate. Just over a month from their first release, they have continued their expansion across the world of drum & bass through brand new tracks ‘Bannockburn’ and ‘Struggle’. These are two tracks which signify just how electric the pairing has proven to be, something which has translated into their music. The first of the two is ‘Bannockburn’, with an introduction alluding to just how explosive the drop is building up to become. You’re catapulted through a zipline of shaking subs and slamming drumbeats, with a bassline that drives straight through the tracks core. Both producers show their experience in the way they masterfully manipulate sounds and the result is chaotic, yet still streamlined in its composition. 

The second part of the forthcoming Trendkill single is ‘Struggle’, just as cutthroat as its forerunner, although its hooks cut deeper and deeper between every drum relay. ‘Struggle’ yet again demonstrates that Burr Oak aren’t afraid to go for the jugular and they do this with the utmost precision, something which shines through their expert craftmanship. Stabbing synths slice their way through the mix and before long you’re totally enveloped by the carnage. It’s another monumental step in the evolution of Burr Oak – something which Trendkill are nurturing, as they have done countless times with artists who are now dominating global stages.

Two of Russia’s finest drum & bass producers have combined forces for an exciting new project. St Petersburg’s Microfunk mastermind Bop, and Moscow’s minimalistic groove guru Subwave, unite for their debut collaborative release ‘Love & Other Drugs’. With their elegant approach to drum & bass, this four-track EP fuses futuristic indie-electronica, 2-step UK garage, glitchy beats and 80’s inspired vocal stylings.

Progressive euphoria is the name of the game in ‘Teardrops’ as Bop x Subwave pick apart the structure of D+B in this warm, delicate and hypnotic glitch number. Following suit is ‘Space Warp’ - darker with eerie undertones, packaged as a sub-heavy stepper.

The second half of ‘Love & Other Drugs’ sees the duo branch out beyond the realms of traditional D+B. The bittersweet ballad ‘Don’t Wake Me Up’ is kitted out with a definitive 80’s style. Seeing the EP home is ‘The Touch’ with the syncopated beatwork of 2-step UK Garage, complete with skippy breaks and snappy vocal sampling.

In the decade since the release of Hospital Records’ ‘Future Sound Of Russia’ LP, Bop and Subwave have produced an impressive array of tracks across Hospital Records, Med School, Liquicity, Shogun Audio, Metalheadz and Microfunk, cementing their reputations for going beyond the boundaries of D+B. Bop x Subwave - Don't Wake Me Up

‘17 years of Mainframe Recordings’ album. The LP features an eye watering 18 tracks, all of which provide a snapshot into how the imprint has evolved over the course of its expansion. As an album, it’s a formidable collection of tracks. But when looking at Mainframe’s vast history, they would need such an LP to pay homage to their legacy and ‘17 Years of Mainframe’ certainly delivers.
