When I was a kid growing up in Newfoundland, NTV would regularly run out of commercials and run music videos instead. I rember this song vividly - my eight-year-old interpretation of a creepy, angsty ballad about a bed-wetting mechanic, and the chills that ran up my spine every time I heard it for the remainder of the 80s. In the years since, my analysis has gained nuance but the chilling effect remained. To finish off the album, please enjoy my rendering of Bruce Springsteen's 1985 chart-topper: I'm On Fire.

Keep an ear out for Jaron Freeman-Fox's amazing violin work in addition to Ben's beautiful (as usual) bass and Don picking up the cello. The arrangement is rounded out by Jeff Heisholt, ressurecting Springsteen's classic riff on hammond organ. (The super-cheesy 80s synth was in the shop that day.)

Human Race is a song about a close member of my family that has suffered from mental illnesses and learning disabilities throughout their life. It’s about honouring and recognizing their strength and durability and at the same time bringing to light my own failings and my own weakness. It’s me commenting on how difficult life is for all of us and how escaping is something that all of us think about and consider from time to time. It’s a rat race out there in the world and it isn’t helping the human condition, it’s putting more pressure on us and causing us more anxiety. I used to come home some days and as soon as I walked through the door I’d fall onto the floor crying. Praying that the universe would take good care of that person I loved and rid them of their personal suffering. In those moments of vulnerability I could feel my own suffering and that would make me feel utterly helpless.

Makeda is a Vancouver Island singer-songwriter and Climate Activist. In 2012 she released her debut album "Peace of Mind".  Makeda considers herself to be a Popular music artist that dabbles in blues, jazz and a bit of reggae. She took a break from recording and performing to focus on promoting other artists. She was also a bit jaded about how hard it was to break into the industry in a meaningful way.
