HOW I MET THE BASS is a project I started in 2015. I thought it was nice to ask artists about their roots. Music that changed their life and had a big impact on their later doings. So I built the series around friends and artists I respect to make a colored showcase between Techno and House music. That´s what it´s all about. Simply tracks from your youth and I´m happy to have so many great producer, DJs and live-acts telling so many great stories.

Q: Let's get into the mood for your mix. A lot of love and light from the past - how did these tracks influence your later doings?

A: With the selection of tracks I tried to trace a little bit the last 40 years in which I have more or less actively listened to music. From the childhood hits of the 1980s that were on the radio, to Hip Hop and Breakbeats, to House and the varieties of electronic music with a straight beat: I've always tried to play as wide a spectrum as possible of awesome music that I personally like and hope I've succeeded with this mix. Nevertheless, it's also perfectly clear that there are certainly dozens of other tracks that have influenced me and that don't appear in this mix. I have also left out (most of) the usual suspects of classic tracks.  

Q: How would you reflect the past 2 years of pandemic for yourself?

A: The last two years of the pandemic have been really educational and I've found that despite the adverse circumstances for DJs and artists, I've turned the corner quite well. We had already founded our new booking agency called &&booking before the outbreak and had to wait a long time with the announcement until it made sense from our point of view to present such a venture again. And fortunately, our people were not among those who flew to Tanzania, India and Mexico anyway. My label Feines Tier certainly helped me get through the time. I simply released more music and thus I didn't get bored during the pandemic. Lucky me I was able to do this!

Q: Which future projects are on the way - what are you currently working on?

A: In the near future, of course, new great records will appear on Feines Tier, which one or the other perhaps would not expect. In addition to the booking agency, the label and our own events, I have also founded a sustainable startup with my brother, which is also very exciting and represents a nice antipole to the entertainment world: We grow cress and microgreens year-round for Cologne's top gastronomy.

Q: Let's get into the mood for your mix. Many 1980s tracks are inside alongside this retro Synthwave aera sounds: So how did you meet the 'bass' in this time?

A: Well, that was a crucial period for me musical-wise. And if you followed my career you can definitely hear that in my productions. So as for most people those teenage years were very formative. That’s why I choose those tracks which accompanied me through all those years.

Q: Flashback to the last almost 3 years of pandemic: How did you reflect this time for yourself and what have you learned/discovered?

A: The pandemic was obviously a very difficult time for all of us. Actually at the beginning I kind of enjoyed being not on tour and having more time to spend with my family and kids. But of course after some time this uncertainty of how things would develop were really frightening. And so this time had a lot of ups and downs. But if I learned something in that period it was that I could strongly rely on my family and my closets friends. That was a nice feeling.

Q: Which future projects are on the way? So: What are your plans for the next year?

A: As probably most artists and DJs I used the pandemic to work on some new, exciting projects like my new artist album, new collaborations and a new clothing-line from Bunny Tiger. All those things will see the light of day in 2023.

Q: Let's get into the mood for your mix. Why did you choose these tracks and what do they still mean to you today?

A: These were the first electronic tracks I had heard at an early age (4-6 y.o.) and got the most impressed from. To me they will always remain very special, as they are representing ageless, provocative and soulful, energizing and nostalgic sounds, which remind me my careless childhood.

Q: Do you still play some of those tracks in your DJ sets now?

A: Yes I do! And I love how the energy immediately rises when I play them. Music is like a time machine, it can bring you right back at the time when you first heard it. I also like to play old tracks because I was too young to rave on them when they came out.

Q: Which future Zubok projects are on the way?

A: I’m currently working on preparation for live performances and other new interesting projects. I’m also hoping to finally release my first video clip in the beginning of the new year, which I'm preparing already since a very long time.

3 QUESTIONS to OBERST & BUCHNER:

Q: Let's get into the mood for your mix. Why did you choose these tracks and how did they connect you with the bass once?

A: The mix shows our transition from rock to electronic music. It consists of tracks from Indie, ambient rock, progressive- and postrock, as well as different genres of electronica. It resonates influences that guided us from our band era 2005-2009 to electronic music. At this time we also tried to incorporate synths and synthetic drums to our post-rock projects clearly influenced by acts like Radiohead, the Notwist or John Frusciante to name a few. Maybe one realises our shift from rock to electronic music with acts like modeselektor, console or pantha du prince, who became relevant for us because they didn’t change aesthetics in terms of atmosphere of our former musical taste and outcome. Without forgetting the routes in the epic sound walls of 2010s postrock and indie hymns - from where we derive as musicians - we still try to incorporate those elements into our music. 

Q: Reflecting the past 2+ years of pandemic: What did you do in this time and how did you handle lockdown and creativity in one?

A: On the one hand, the pandemic finally gave us the time to do music again, and realize a very big project like our second album „marble arch“. Since we normally both have day jobs beside the Oberst & Buchner project and the Heimlich Musik label, we finally had the freedom to get up in the morning and jam the whole day. We were not on the road at weekends so weekends where dedicated to producing music. In the first three weeks of lockdown we finished 10 remixes and an EP. Things that would have taken us a year normally. On the other hand it was hard to gain creativity for club music when clubs where closed and the most important part of clubbing, which is „being in a club“ was missing. 

Q: Talking about future projects: What's on the way, what's coming next?

A: Up next we release a remix for Dina Summer (Kalipo & Local Suicide) on Iptamenos Records. Currently we are working on an EP with vocalists Tobias Koett and Toby Whyle, And preparing remixes for Tosca on K7! an the band Nihils.

3 QUESTIONS to BETH LYDI:

Q: Tell us about your story please! How did you get in touch with music once and how did you get infected with electronic music? 

A: I chose to focus on tracks that represent my meeting with music in general. My very early influences were, as I think with everyone through my parents. The intro and another track in the mix is from Janet Jackson’s album "Velvet Rope”. The album tour was actually the first and last concert my mother brought me to before she died, so there is a lot of appreciation towards her connected with these songs. The last track is actually something that represents my first love for electronic music. As a teenie I was a die hard Gabba fan, and this track was on a CD I bought during this time, the Thunderdome Christmas edition. To be honest this was one of the few tracks from this era that I felt I could kind of use in this mix. The other ones sound, well, how do I put this... Rough? Haha. In between there are songs that carry many good memories and my journey through different genres. As you probably notice, Bar25 played a huge role in my discovery of my love for Berlin and the lifestyle, freedom and sound here.

Q: Most of the tracks you selected are sooo timeless. Do you still play them inside your DJ sets?

A: Every track in this mix represents a very distinct period of my life and good memories. Even before I became a DJ myself I loved discovering new music and in the times before Shazam I used to memorise vocals from tracks I liked on the dance floor and google them when I got home. That’s for instance how I found “Take Me Baby” by Jimi Tenor or “Snug Descent” from Channel X and Jake The Rapper. For tracks without vocals I listened through sets from the DJs I liked and tried to find them (hello "WLS Today" by Hennon). Some of the tracks I still play today for sure, but some I have mostly because of the memories.

Q: Which projects are you currently working on - so what can we expect from you soon?

A: Uh! Haha, I work on a lot of different stuff at the moment. Over the last year I made like 20 new tracks that I have been to lazy and/ or busy to get out there, but at the moment I am enjoying some quiet days in the mountains in Norway that are perfect for these kinds of things. But coming up first is the release of “Wine and Cheese”, a song I made with Andreas last year that will be released on our label SNOE. Also, I am very excited to have quite many shows already planned for the year! I think we all had quite the existential crisis during covid, so I am very thankful to be able to tour again across the globe. I will never take this for granted ever again!

Q: Getting into the mood for your mix: Why did you choose these tracks and what do they still mean to you?

A: It's a mix that I used to do a lot in the mid 1990's! There is a relationship with Laurent Garnier. I trained to mix in my record shop Ozone Records that I opened in 1995 in Grenoble! And it was in this shop that I met The Hacker, Kittin and Oxia.

Q: How did you reflect the past 2-3 years of pandemic for your DJ and producer career?

A: During the pandemic I produced my 6th album which will be released in September 2023.

Q: You are still producing and releasing a lot of stuff. What is your focus on music in 2023?

A: My new album with a lot of collab tracks with my friends and I will release 200 tracks from my back catalog, period 1995-2012!

Q: Please take us deep into your mix - a lot of 'happy vibes': How do
you reflect your early days and what did this music mean to you once?

A: In my „How I Met the Bass” episode I wanted to show the songs that made me interested in electronic music (like house) and those that are related to special events, such as my first vinyl record, music videos that I return to, or parties when I was starting my adventure with deejaying.

Q: Would you still play some of those tracks in your DJ sets today?

A: I play more complex or stronger music in my current DJ sets because my style has evolved, however, there are events where I go back to older tracks, like the boat parties I promote with my friends in Berlin.

Q: Which projects are you currently working on? So: What can we expect
from you soon?

A: I am currently working on new demos and developing my Live Act to be ready for the summer season. Besides that I am waiting for two releases planned for April and May: "Codename Eagle" composed with Gespona, which will be released on Artminding and a re-edit of "Say Yes" (Atmosphere) done with Bondar (San Diego), and Lazarusman which became more energetic than the original and you can expect a music video!

Q: Let's get into the mood for your mix and beautiful track selection: Why did you choose these tracks and what did they mean to you back in the days?

A: This mix was a challenge for me since it forced me to go back to my childhood. I selected the songs that my mother listened to while we were at home and some others that I discovered on the radio. 

Q: Would you still put some of those tracks inside your current DJ sets?

A: Of course! In many of my DJ sets I like to close with one of these songs with the aim of getting out of the typical dance floor song. Always generates a very pleasant surprise to the public.

Q: Which future Gueva projects are coming next?

A: I am working on two EPs and an album by the end of the year, seeking to incorporate a sound that mixes Melodic Techno and Indie Dance and at the same time using my voice as an instrument and with vocals in Spanish, I feel that the industry needs more Electronic Music in Spanish. In addition to this I am going to launch a collective of Argentine artists that is a record label where we can show our music without the need to follow an established standard. Also by the end of July I am going to launch an events production company in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Q: Let's get into the mood for your mix. Why did you choose these tracks and what did they meant to you once and still mean to you today?

A: I choose these tunes because although they don't represent my sound, they do reflect in various ways my approach as an artist these days. Needless to say, this music influenced my romantic journey with electronic music.

Q: Would you still play some of those tracks in your DJ sets today?

A: The answer is yes. Most have been dropped during the years in my sets. I believe that in the right moment, each track has its place during the journeys I try to create.

Q: What projects are you currently working on and what can we expect from you soon?

A: Last year my main focus in the studio was on creating the album which was released in August, while in 2023 my goal is to put out more singles which some already found their way to labels like Multinotes, Rebirth, Exploited, Monaberry, Live at Robert Johnson, and many more. Parallel to that, I plan to keep working with some of the amazing artists on my label Frau Blau. Furthermore, you can catch me play during the next months in Europe at some of my favorite destinations. I will also return to Latin America for a few shows, as well as debut in some spots in Asia which will be announced soon. Q: What a huge storyteller. Guess you could have mixed 300+ tracks. So why did you choose these tracks now and what did they mean to you once and still mean to you today? 

A: Thank youuu! I have been a fan of this brilliant podcast series for some time and it's a huge honor to be invited. So, yes, it was a big process to record this mix, a very special one for me, especially to decide on which tracks I wanted to include in it. And the thought process behind it. I think I can say that I have never put so much thought in another mix I have recorded. The story of How I Met The Bass definitely received very special attention from me. I tried to include as many influences as I could, but like you said, I could easily make a 10 hour mix. The elimination process happened with the flow of the story, and obviously I had to leave out so many other amazing tracks that shaped my musical understanding today. But these are still a good representation of my musical influence and I am happy with the journey I created. 

Q: How would you describe your own musical development since you first got in touch with Electronic Music? 

A: It is very similar to me, how I am as a person, I would say. Changing and evolving all the time, while keeping the very core of it untouched. A little bit like having that something special that hits the spot in common in so many different forms.

Q: What projects are you currently working on and what can we expect from you soon? 

A: I am obsessively and enthusiastically working on my new label: Marginalia. I am excited to create a platform to support, nurture and develop the incredible output of the producers whose music I have been playing all over the world over the past years. The concept of Marginalia itself dates back to the 11th Century and references the wildly inventive notes, markings, doodles and sketches made in the margins of medieval books and scriptures — a place where the human imagination was free to run wild. To translate this age-old creative even witty tradition into a twenty-first century paradigm, I am looking forward to hopefully and humbly giving back to the incredible pool of artists I admire and think deserve more recognition. The first release should come around September. Non-stop touring and creating a passion project at the same time is already taking lots of my time, yet I try to also produce whenever I have the time & inspiration. So we can expect lots of fresh music!
