Sam Dunscombe is a musician and sound artist specialising in the use of clarinets, computers, and microphones.  As a clarinettist, they has worked with composers including Anthony Pateras, Iancu Dumitrescu, Chikako Morishita and Pierluigi Billone, and performed alongside improvisers including Satoko Fuji, Richard Barrett, Jaap Blonk, Milana Zaric, and Christophe Charles.  They have a special interest in extended techniques, compiling an extensive personal lexicon of sounds over the past 10 years, and are as comfortable in the field of free improvisation as they are performing repertoire. 

Sam’s most recent activities include preparing an album of the collected works for clarinet by Ana Maria Avram and Iancu Dumitrescu, performing Pierluigi Billone’s 80 minute bass clarinet duo 1+1=1, and exhibiting a large scale sound-art project mapping the layers of human engagement that intersect within San Clemente Canyon (San Diego).   Sam is a founding member of the ensembles Golden Fur (Australia/Southern California) and YossaYossa (Japan/Australia/USA), alongside being an avid performer of chamber and improvised musics with several other ensembles worldwide.

Sam is currently an ABD candidate for Doctor of Music Performance (DMA) at the University of California (San Diego), where they combines their passions for field recording, extended clarinet technique, and computer audio.  2015 plans include undertaking a 6 month visiting fellowship at the College of the Arts in Bern where they will work with Ernesto Molinari, being ensemble-in-residence at Tectonics Israel with Golden Fur, performing at the Supersense Festival of Ecstatic Music in Melbourne (which will include giving the Australian premier of Jakob Ullman's music), and a large-scale tour of Japan that will include collaborative work with Jaap Blonk, Seijiro Murayama, Minoru Sato, and others.
