Theia is a hypothetical protoplanet that, according to the collision theory of lunar formation, collided with Earth about 4.5 billion years ago. Theia itself was destroyed in this collision. The fragments created by the impact gathered in an orbit around the Earth. In the further course the moon has formed from it. According to this theory, Theia was about the size of Mars. According to one of these models Theia had formed in the Lagrange point L4 of the Earth-Sun system. It followed the Earth as a "Trojan" for a long time before the collision occurred.

The name Theia for the hypothetical impactor was first used in a 2000 paper (A. N. Halliday) and comes from Greek mythology. According to this myth, the moon goddess Selene was born of the Titaness Theia.

In this song the composer Frank Mehl does not describe the collision itself, because this would be more devastating than this track could paint. Conceivable, however, would be this scenario - transferred to the present time. People are sitting comfortably in sidewalk cafes despite the impending catastrophe, going about their daily business, and a catastrophe is brewing over their heads. But the scientists had reassured them all: it will happen only in a few years...

Theia ist ein hypothetischer Protoplanet, der gemäß der Kollisionstheorie der Mondentstehung vor etwa 4,5 Milliarden Jahren mit der Erde kollidiert ist. Theia selbst wurde bei dieser Kollision zerstört. Die beim Einschlag entstandenen Bruchstücke sammelten sich in einer Umlaufbahn um die Erde. Im weiteren Verlauf hat sich daraus der Mond gebildet. Nach dieser Theorie war Theia etwa so groß wie der Mars. Nach einem dieser Modelle hatte sich Theia im Lagrangepunkt L4 des Erde-Sonne-Systems gebildet. Sie folgte über lange Zeit der Erde als „Trojaner“, bevor es zur Kollision kam.

Der Name Theia für den hypothetischen Impaktor wurde erstmals in einer Arbeit aus dem Jahr 2000 (A. N. Halliday) verwendet und stammt aus der griechischen Mythologie. Die Mondgöttin Selene wurde nach diesem Mythos von der Titanin Theia geboren.

In diesem Lied freilich, beschreibt der Komponist Frank Mehl nicht die Kollision an sich, denn diese wäre verheerender, als es dieser Track ausmalen könnte. Vorstellbar aber wäre dies Szenario - übertragen auf die heutige Zeit. Menschen sitzen trotz der bevorstehenden Katastrophe gemütlich in Straßencafés, gehen ihren alltäglichen Dingen nach, und über ihren Köpfen braut sich eine Katastrophe zusammen. Aber die Wissenschaftler hatten sie alle beruhigt: es passiert erst in ein paar Jahren...
