What kicks off as a Chez Damier groove makes the transition into a loose dub monster. Collecting traces of the original sound and dispersing them with magic movements we see why Kollektiv Turmstrasse are a top act. Shifting the attention from the front to the far back from the obvious to the abstract... Turmstrasse create that parallel groove on top of the groove which seems to tighten up with every minute. Fine particles of sounds are sprayed onto the relentless groove and make it a real crowd pleaser.

“This album is about the cold dark grey Berlin winter” – Marc Houle.

A simple statement, sure – but anyone who experienced Berlin during the winter of 2009 / 2010 will know exactly where Marc is coming from. Each day and night the temperature remained below freezing, the sky grey from an unsettling lack of sun. Ice covered streets from Kreuzberg to Prenzlauer Berg. The conditions did, however, grant Marc the opportunity to spend all of his waking hours in the studio, absorbing the warm welcoming heat generated from his analogue synths. The experimentation during this winter period was the catalyst for Marc’s latest long-player for Minus – quite possibly his most accomplished and personal release to date.

Drift is an album of tracks inspired by the prolonged Berlin winter, and the depression, which it so often causes – from the chill of the coldest nights felt on tracks such as Inside and The Next, through to songs that encompass the frustrations of gray skies such as Seeing In The Dark. Marc has created a season of emotions and in doing so put forth his own personal frustrations towards what is considered “techno” in its most basic form. Locking himself away during a winter season to fully embrace his own idealism has resulted in an album on which his rebellious nature and desire for a more experimental musical mentality has cast him further from the standard practice of our techno underworld. His grievances are at their most clear on the title track, which is an intense, and ultimately angry, techno belter produced as the winter season caused feelings less of “beauty” and more of suffocation.

Drift is not without moments in which the sunlight peeks through the layers of heavy clouds, however. Tracks such as Sweet and Hitcher Man provide the audible interpretation of a person dreaming of warmer climates. The not so forgotten idea of being elsewhere, with the experience of finally seeing the snow fade away and the clouds drift towards springtime skies. By the time the album reaches its finale, with the track Hammering, it’s clear that Marc’s winter blues have receded, as the few remaining patches of ice melt into puddles of past musical memories. While summer has not yet arrived, the sun is starting to make its presence felt, warming the city streets once more.

A mainstay of the Minus camp, Marc Houle has been known to push the boundaries with his output for the label, always adding tweaks and twists from analogue synths, unexpected, obscure sounds, and an onslaught of vocals and playfulness. He is a producer clearly not satisfied with following the guidelines set by other techno practitioners. His take on electronic music is one in its own, a personal sound that draws upon his early influences from industrial, retro and Detroit, along with a modern vision of path-finding techno. His ability to play with ideas and equally provide functionality for the floor sets Marc Houle apart. And his latest venture for the label, although inspired by the coldest moments of the year, is undoubtedly hot as fire.

For our 38th release on Remote Area we welcome back SANDY HUNER and RAMON TAPIA. 

SANDY HUNER has been pioneering tech house and house sounds since the early 90's. He co-founded Amsterdam imprint 100%% Pure in 1993 and now manages three labels. His addiction for the studio has led him to produce world class club tunes including Rare Tap with 2000 and One. Following its release he finally succumbed to the club demands for him to DJ.

RAMON TAPIA, son of a Chilean musician, his father's music was provocative enough to enrage the military government of his home country, resulting in the whole family having to move to Europe. Now Belgium based Ramon has been creating a similar stir with his own productions and DJ sets, only this time the labels and booking requests have been running to him.

One year after their first collaboration CHI-TOWN, SANDY HUNER and RAMON TAPIA release their second EP with an infectious tech house sound.

SLICK: Floating melodies, housey vocals and quirky percussions mesh together into an harmonious track. The occasional break with an atmospheric feel gives the club crowd a breather, until the slick beat drops back in and the booties on the dance floor start shaking it.

GARRY: The hypnotizing beat perfectly balances with mellow highlights, giving room to slowly develop into a spacey track with mysterious piano melodies.

Marc Houle grew up in Windsor, Canada with Detroit as his mid-90’s backyard party playground – as a kid he had a love for obscure new wave & analog synths, so it was just a matter of time before he started making music of his own. Ask any of his friends, and they’ll tell you the same: the guy is a prolific music-making-machinist, dedicated to quality, but quantity as well – with nearly 1,000 tracks to his credit (most of which are tucked away on his hard drive as super secret weapons).

Now taking the reigns alongside his A&R partners Magda & Troy Pierce, Marc Houle has resurrected their label Items & Things, breaking it free from its former Minus sub-label status. Spanning electronic genres in a variety of forms… from disco tech to experimental to techno, to bring their eclectic tastes together as an outlet for music they discover on their travels & a home for their own releases.

Marc Houle’s current sound can be described in cityscapes – somewhere between Chicago & Detroit, with a new-wave underbelly. His live performances are always diverse & genre-bending reigns supreme. No two sets are ever the same, except perhaps, their ability to impress the crowd.

He’s travelled a long way from his 1997 residency at Richie Hawtin’s club “13 Below” in Detroit, to being asked to join the legendary Minus label, now making Berlin his home & continuing to show his diverse musical roots on his productions. In February 2012 Marc Houle released his heavy-hitting, second album and single “Undercover” on Items & Things, with more releases in the making.

As a production team, Run Stop Restore has been a pragmatic group with Marc Houle, Troy Pierce and Magda pursuing their own hectic schedules of production and performance. Recently, the three members have taken the opportunity to meet in the same studio to combine their unique ideas. Their Items and Things imprint - a label set up as an output for new projects, collaborations and ideas with a distinctly left of centre attitude is primarily run by wireless communication. After a pair of compilation EPs, the first act to receive a dedicated release was Click Box - the brainchild of Marco Silva and Pedro Turra whose tough, retro sound, non-conformist arrangements and skilful sound design fitted perfectly to the I&T ethos. The relationship has obviously grown at speed, culminating in this two track Minus release recorded during a five day session in Sao Paulo, Brazil. With all five artists jamming together on a host of analog synths and a low slung bass guitar contribution from Marc Houle.

The collaboration produces two cylindrical grooves that work like a thermos flask - signifying the presence of heat without radiating it. There’s a smouldering intensity contained by a cool outer casing that give the tracks a very particular attitude, with certain key instruments being recorded and used unsequenced, without edits or quantization that raise the curtain on side A. Any track entitled Helen in the Keller needs to be approached with a certain amount of caution and the glassy shards of warping live bass guitar together with Troy’s raw claustrophobic vocal musings create a dark tone as the lunatic fringe takes over. The track is essentially split into two halves, with the second introducing a low, oscillating Juno-60 style bass riff that merges with the hi-hat driven rhythm section to enhance the tracks danceability. From there on, all the elements gel perfectly creating a track that manages to harness the energy of a live performance with some instruments being recorded in one shot.

As collaborations go – it fits like a glove. Anyone who’s been following the trajectories of those involved should have no trouble spotting their individual contributions and how they compliment each other so effectively on these futuristic interpretations of bygone genres.

Really touched by all the support we've been receiving from everyone and so, so appreciative of it all. It's only been a short time we've been writing this story together but just the fact that doing the music we feel in our hearts manages to connect with so many other people is gratifying beyond words.
While this is certainly only the end of a chapter and the beginning of a much longer story, it's important for us to take a moment and take note of the things that matter. Beyond polls and numbers (which are transitory as all in life is) it's the downright love we've felt from so many that has truly left a lasting mark on us both.
So as a little token of thanks we're offering a free download of our unreleased Straight To Your Head remix which many people have been asking us about this past year.
It feels like a nice way to close this chapter as we begin to start the next.

WetYourSelf! Recordings parting shot for 2012 comes in the form of a four track EP from bone-fide techno innovator Marc Houle and is entitled ‘Zorba’ EP.

Having left Richie Hawtin’s M_Nus in 2011 to refocus energies on his, Magda and Troy Pierce’s Items & Things imprint, Marc Houle has continued to impress fans of forward thinking techno, most recently with his Undercover LP project. Houle’s involvement with WetYourSelf!’s weekly club night goes back years while his superb remix for APP’s ‘All I Can Think About’ on WYS! Recordings 2011 meant he was a must have for a future release.

From the plucked bass tones of opener ‘Zorba’ to the fluttering reed synths of closer ‘Oo oo’, Italo and Cosmic disco is the dominating force on this rare foray outside of the Items & Things camp, and the results are infectious.

The unstable, detuned bass of ‘I Uh You’ create a woozy, drunken funk that fans of Houle’s material will lap up while the uninitiated will no doubt be taken by it’s weirdo charm, a trope that bleeds through the entire EP but really unleashes in third track ‘Rainysnake’, a masterpiece in loose, machine music.

Overall, ‘Zorba’ is the sound of Houle playing with his influences and playing with his machines and the result is a resolutely ‘fun’, unique and sometimes bizarre EP.

Nightlife’s International treasure, Heidi is back with the second release on her label project, this time presenting ‘Jackathon Jams feat. Alexis Raphael & Marc Houle’. With bubbling UK talent, Alexis Raphael at the helm and a remix by Items and Things label boss Marc Houle, this is a nifty little collection of club weapons with that all-important Jackathon swagger.

Heidi started her Jackathon Jams imprint earlier this year, bringing Miss Kittin, Maya Jane Coles and tINI together in one tidy package and is next championing Alexis Raphael, one of London’s favourite DJ/Promoters. With a handful of sensational tracks under his belt (on Hot Creations and Lower East) and running one of London’s most popular club nights Crèche, it’s no wonder Alexis has caught the attention of Heidi.

Delivering two special productions for the imprint’s sophomore release, both tracks carry a nod to retro house with some offbeat modern flavour. A-side ‘Brickwall’ kicks off with sauntering percussion and a rubbery bassline soon to be invaded by wonky synths and FX along with a central vocal line. Second original ‘You Can Do It’ follows in a similar vein with another distinctive spoken male vocal entering the pulse of the rough-edged, jacking groove.

A superb Marc Houle remix rounds off the package as the Berlin pioneer takes ‘Brickwall’ and bestows his own stripped back and expansive approach, warping the vocal to form a barely recognisable framework then unleashing darkly seductive chimes, building the drama with big beats and abstract melodies.

A mix based on the British Museum
 
Featuring a mix of 12th century Tibetan monks song, one of the first ever recordings of music, made by Thomas Edison on a wax cylinder in 1888, poetic spoken word, 9th century Gregorian Chant, A call to the lama from afar, some unreleased exclusives, 9/8 techno, traditional Chinese music mixed with rude glitch, and a binaural museum.

The brief for this mix was to make something inspired by an architectural space. When I was doing my Post-Doc at UCL I used to go the British Museum to relax, and work in the beautiful library there, so I chose the space for the mix. I wanted to capture the ambient atmosphere in the central courtyard, so I did some binaural recording to include in the mix. I also wanted to make the mix something of an exploration through history and ideas in line with the contents of the museum, so I brought in lots of disparate music spanning the centuries and continents. I also mixed it in a way to be like a journey though the museum, turning corners and regularly coming across something totally different and unexpected, with each track being like a different exhibit. Hence the name of the mix, in that, each piece of music almost has a visual content.

Why are the vocals turned down so low? This is the way we make Techno!

To mark the label’s 50th release Marc Houle gets right back to basics with two raw, stripped down future classics. What’s more both vinyl cuts, “Techno Vocals” and “On It” clock in at under six minutes meaning that this compact 12inch’s sound and message is going to be coming through extra loud and clear.

On “Techno Vocals” (as with all Houle productions) each sound is perfectly realised, commanding its own space with metronomic discipline. The rigid drum patterns, analogue explosions, regimented snare rolls, laser guided effects and delayed bleeps interact with supreme efficiency, while the arrangement is mapped out with cool, calculated intent. The result is a totally robust example of A-grade techno that’s really brought to life by the self-referential, pitched down vocal hook!

It’s well documented that Marc has more than a passing interest in 80’s electro, New Wave and retro computer games and these influences are somehow more apparent on Minus 50 than on his earlier solo releases or as part of Run, Stop, Restore. “On It” in particular will turn a few heads, making, as it does, a detour into previously unexplored territory. Revolving around a heavily filtered melodic bass riff, Houle punctuates the dry, upfront groove with a choice selection of rough, old school samples before dropping into a series of moody bass variations that give the track its distinctive flavour.

To complete the release, dub and accapella versions of “Techno Vocals” are also available as digital downloads offering amongst other things the chance to reformat the vocals over the original beats.

Magda, Troy Pierce and Marc Houle’s occasional label Items and Things makes a welcome return featuring four more superlative grooves from Marc Houle, Kasper, Thrill Cosby and Alexi Delano.

The label was created as an outlet for the weird, experimental and beautiful sounds the trio often come across on their travels and Spies and Lies fits the bill perfectly, containing music that will stimulate, overwhelm and confound in equal measures.

Extreme by Marc Houle is a classic piece of atmospheric, sci fi techno. Relying on a bare minimum of sounds, it generates suspense from the fantastic octave jumping, 6/8 retro synth line at its heart, with some additional morphs and tweaks adding further dynamics to the proceedings. Odd, quirky but with an inherent phatness, Extreme is a standout track!

Oogity Boogity is another experimental groove laced with ominous cello stabs, African flavoured percussion and freaky, messed up vocal overdubs. The oscillating bassline bubbles along as Thrill Cosby navigates a tricky path through this murky, efx laden landscape which is as strange as it is enticing.

Kasper’s, whose recent R U OK remix has established him as one to watch, Turn Tricks On The Side is a more typical late night groover with Stockhausen-esque peripheral fx and a deep, dark pumping bassline. Just as it gets going Kasper suddenly breaks it down and an evil wind ushers in the central hookline like you’ve just opened the door to some haunted dancefloor, you want to run and hide but the infectious beats keep you rooted to the spot.

Last but by no means least, Would You? is a flowing, vocal tinged affair from Alexi Delano. The precision groove, twisted synth lines, intense breakdown and subtle edits all add up to make it a really accomplished peak time floor filler.
