Four Organs is composed exclusively of the gradual augmentation (lengthening) of individual tones within a single (dominant 11th) chord. The tones within the chord gradually extend out like a sort of horizontal bar graph in time. As the chord stretches out, slowly resolving to the tonic A and then gradually changing back to the dominant E, a sort of slow-motion music is created. The maracas lay down a steady time grid of even eighth-notes throughout, enabling the performers to play together while mentally counting up to as much as 256 beats on a given cycle of sustained tones.


Four Organs is the only piece I am aware of that is composed exclusively of the gradual augmentation of individual tones within a single chord. From the beginning to the end there are no changes of pitch or timbre; all changes are rhythmic and simply consist of gradually increasing durations. This process of augmentation was suggested by the enormous elongation of individual tenor notes in Organum as composed by Perotin and others in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries in Paris at Notre Dame Cathedral. Tenor notes that in the original chant may have been equivalent to our quarter- or half-notes can take several pages of tied whole-notes when augmented by Perotin or Leonin.


Four Organs was composed in January 1970. It was first performed at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City by myself and members of my own ensemble later that same year. It also turned out to be one of my first pieces to be heard by a large concert-going public when Michael Tilson Thomas invited me to perform it with him and members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in Boston in 1971 and at Carnegie Hall in 1973, where it provoked a riot.

Separation is the stage where we make our thoughts and emotions more defined by practicing introspection, self-awareness, and self-analysis.

A simple example of this process is understanding the difference between our anger and our grief or the conflicting desire to isolate ourselves but also connect with other people.

The process of separation involves truly becoming aware of our authentic feelings towards others and ourselves. In this stage, we choose to experience our anger, frustration, or disappointment towards another or ourselves, rather than reverting back to the old habit of dutifully trying to “forgive and forget” because it is the “right” or comfortable thing to do (or, on the other hand, to react and hold a grudge).

Separation is closely entwined with shadow work in that we must allow all feelings and thoughts within us to surface side by side and become aware of our “darker side.” This practice helps us to isolate particular elements of our character to honestly see and assess them, then to eventually consciously embrace and transform them."

Primavera per me non è la donna
botticelliana dell'Allegoria.
Primavera è per me questa farfalla
fatta di grazia e di fragilità!

Oggi, lungo il sentiero solatio
dove sosta la lepre alle vedette,
un orecchio diritto e l'altro floscio,
tra il grano verdazzurro, lungo il rivo
costellato di primule e d'anemoni,
tra il biancospino, che fiorisce appena,
ho rivista l'Antòcari volare
e il cuore mi sobbalza nell'attesa
senza nome che tutte in me resuscita
le primavere dell'adolescenza....

Ma primavera non è giunta ancora.
È la quinta stagione. Un chiaro Marzo
canavesano, inverno già non più,
non primavera ancora. È l'anno vecchio
tinto a verde d'Enrico l'amarissimo.
Se cantano le allodole perdute
nella profonda cavità dei cieli,
non s'odono le rondini garrire;
lasciano appena il Delta o la Gran Sirte
o riposano a Cipro ovver vïaggiano
sul cordame d'un legno tunisino...

Ma l'Antòcari vola e il cuore esulta!
È la farfalla della novità,
la messaggiera della Primavera,
la grazia mite, l'anima del Marzo.
Essa avviva la linfa nelle scorze,
il brusio, il ronzio, lo stridio,
risuscita l'incognito indistinto.

Oh! Messaggiera della Primavera!
La Terra attende. Il cielo che riempie
il frastaglio dei rami e delle roccie
sembra intagliato nel cristallo terso;
il profilo dell'Alpi è puro argento;
pallido è il verde primo, il pioppo è brullo,
la quercia ancor non abbandona il fulvo
stridulo manto che sfidò l'inverno;
allieta lo squallore la pannocchia
pendula verdechiara del nocciòlo,
la nubecola timida del mandorlo;
tiepido è il sole, ma la neve intatta
sta nelle forre squallide, a bacìo.

La Primavera non è giunta ancora,
ma l'Antòcari vola e il cuore esulta!
La messaggiera della Primavera
è timida, sfuggevole alle dita,
coscïente di sua fragilità;
quasi non vola, s'abbandona al vento
e visita la primula e l'anemone,
la pervinca, il galanto, il bucaneve;
il vento marzolino fa tremare
petali ed ali dello stesso tremito
e l'occhio mal discerne la farfalla:
l'ali minori, marezzate in verde,
chiudono come un calice l'insetto.
Insetti e fiori; mimi scaltri, come
v'accordaste nei tempi delle origini?
Le pagine di pietra dissepolte
attestano che i fiori precedettero
gl'insetti sulla terra: fu l'anemone
che alla farfalla ragionò così:
«Sorella senza stelo, come sei
fragile d'ali e debole di volo!
Salvati dal ramarro e dalla passera:
rivestiti di me, tingiti in verde
ai lati, in bianco a mezzo, in fulvo a sommo,
e con l'antenne simula i pistilli!».

E il fior primaverile alla farfalla
primaverile diede i suoi colori:
dolce alleato nella vita breve....

E la caduca musa marzolina
sa che deve sparire con l'anemone,
sparire prima della Primavera...

Visita i fiori, intepidisce il regno
per le grandi farfalle che verranno,
poi, giunta al varco della vita breve,
congeda il Marzo, volgesi all'Aprile:

Aprile! Marzo andò: tu puoi venire!....

I was smelling flowers in the yard, and when I stood up I took a deep breath and the blood all rushed to my brain and I woke up dead on my back in the grass. I had apparently fainted, or died, for about sixty seconds. My neighbor saw me but he thought I had just suddenly thrown myself on the grass to enjoy the sun. During that timeless moment of unconsciousness I saw the golden eternity. I saw heaven. In it nothing had ever happened, the events of a million years ago were just as phantom and ungraspable as the events of now, or the events of the next ten minutes. It was perfect, the golden solitude, the golden emptiness, Something-Or- Other, something surely humble. There was a rapturous ring of silence abiding perfectly. There was no question of being alive or not being alive, of likes and dislikes, of near or far, no question of giving or gratitude, no question of mercy or judgment, or of suffering or its opposite or anything. It was the womb itself, aloneness, alaya vijnana the universal store, the Great Free Treasure, the Great Victory, infinite completion, the joyful mysterious essence of Arrangement. It seemed like one smiling smile, one adorable adoration, one gracious and adorable charity, everlasting safety, refreshing afternoon, roses, infinite brilliant immaterial gold ash, the Golden Age. The "golden" came from the sun in my eyelids, and the "eternity" from my sudden instant realization as I woke up that I had just been where it all came from and where it was all returning, the everlasting So, and so never coming or going; therefore I call it the golden eternity but you can call it anything you want. As I regained consciousness I felt so sorry I had a body and a mind suddenly realizing I didn't even have a body and a mind and nothing had ever happened and everything is alright forever and forever and forever, O thank you thank you thank you.
