Taking up the controller for the next in our SMUT mix series is the incredibly talented Kuscheln. The moniker of Matt Mockford, Kuscheln is the second Canadian to appear on our series and is a multi-talented producer (check out his track ‘Speed Bump’ as featured on Kaptcha’s compilation Xenolith 1.0 release) and DJ who runs Klub Ferret, a Toronto based queer party.  He has made his name playing places such as Phile, Por Detroit and Bossa Nova Civic Club and recently played at Promise Cherry Beach and has even appeared on our friends Ema’s show for Dublin Digital Radio. Matt’s extensive range of influences is reflected in this mix.  Here fusing UK techno, bass and breakbeat with some edits added in for good measure (particularly the iconic Donna Lewis closing), we couldn’t be more delighted to share this ethereal hypnotic mix with you. Darkroom Boudoir - Mix 1

Bringing in Tapes #86 is Violet. In her home city Lisbon, Violet is contributing to her local scene from different angles. She’s co-founder of online radio station Rádio Quântica and also resident at mina – a queer rave in unexpected venues. This work permeates Violet’s work as an artist, as she thoughtfully expresses the political history of dance music through her voice and her music.

As a producer, she has released music on One Eyed Jacks and Love On The Rocks, self-released collaborations with artists likes Elles, DEBONAIR and Nightwave for International Women’s Day, remixed on Cómeme and established her own label – Naive. The first self-released EP on it, “Togetherness” resonated widely, using the sound of familiar breaks and twisting them into new contexts with dub-inspired bass, brass flourishes and dreamy chords. 

Violet incorporates similar sounds from her production process into her DJing, melding breaks, extraterrestrial jacking rhythms, imaginative techno, acid house and more in a way that feels natural and challenging all at once.

We're excited to welcome someone very near and dear to us (and a FAW alum) to FAST_CAST, SF / Bay Area-grown, Boston-based artist Eugenia (@eugeniadj). Lock into an hour of groove, emotion and phenomenal selections.

Eugenia cut her teeth playing local clubs and throwing DIY events in the San Francisco and East Bay. Her energetic mixing style can be defined as bright, tender, and a highly dynamic, jumping across many genres of dance music wrapped in a lush atmosphere -- with her signature touch of sass. Eugenia is now based in Boston, where she plays with local queer collective Boudoir. Fresh from her sets at HÖR Berlin, Fast at Work in Los Angeles and Boiler Room in Boston, she continues to blossom further and curate her own sound.

In 2023, we're refreshing our Critics' Roundtable format, inviting RA's in-house staff writers and industry specialists to reflect on the releases that resonated with them, as well as the trends and news that's circulating around the music sphere. March's roundtable features Andrew Ryce and Kiana Mickles. 

In addition to discussing the much-anticipated EPs and albums that they've enjoyed—Caroline Polachek, Nene H, Fadi Mohem and more—the duo also raise important questions about the contemporary club music landscape: how should we consider an artist's core audience, especially when their music taps into an uncharted trend? What is the strategy behind releasing multiple albums at once, like Skrillex's recent double LP? What can we make of the new pop-electronic crossover, and what are the deeper implications of mainstream musicians appropriating underground tropes and themes?
